Thoughts From Eagles-Giants

blackoutEagles Start Strong And Don’t Look Back

The Eagles came out of the gates determined to put an end to their slow starts.

The Eagles’ offense got the ball first, and set the tone for the game by getting LeSean McCoy going on their way to their first points.

LeSean McCoy began his night by taking his first three carries for 32 yards. McCoy ripped off gains of 12 and 18 on his second and third runs, helping set up the team’s first field goal. Eagles offense stalled in another redzone possession on the opening drive. The Eagles moved the ball well, going 67 yards on 10 plays with McCoy’s runs and Nick Foles spreading the ball to four different receivers, but ultimately they failed to convert a third and four and had to settle for three.

The Eagles would not make the same mistake on their second drive, taking the ball 81 yards and finishing with a spectacular touchdown reception by Zach Ertz. Ertz came down with a great catch, he was covered very well by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but was able to lay out and make a tremendous catch.

The early success with the running game helped make life much easier for Nick Foles and the rest of the offense. On the team’s fourth drive following a 15-yard run from McCoy, Foles delivered his second touchdown pass of the night on a play-action call, hitting James Casey for a 26-yard score.

The defense also came out swinging, forcing the Giants to punt on their first four possessions. The pass rush was very effective early on, with Connor Barwin, Trent Cole, Emmanuel Acho, and Vinny Curry all getting to Eli Manning early on the help kill of New York drives.

The defense finished with a shutout, the first shutout pitched by an Eagles team in 18 years. They were solid against the run and pass throughout the night. Rookie running back Andre Williams was held to just 58 yards, and the Eli Manning threw for just over 150.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • Nick Foles finished with 248 yards, two touchdowns, but committed two more bad turnovers. Foles cost the team a chance for points with a bad interception before the end of the half deep in New York territory, and also began the second half with a pick that set the Giants up with good field position. I’m very concerned about Foles’ decision making, these turnovers could have very easily let the Giants back into the game.
  • Jeremy Maclin threw a nice block for LeSean McCoy on a 15-yard run in the second quarter. It was a quiet night receiving for Maclin, who caught just two passes for 16 yards.
  • LeSean McCoy broke out with a 149-yard performance. He was much more decisive with his runs, but also got a lot of help from his line.
  • The offensive line played their best game of the year. Guys were able to get down the field and make solid blocks. I thought center David Molk played a pretty game.
  • McCoy took a nasty fall on an 18-yard on the team’s second drive, and nearly fumbled the ball away. Fortunately, the officials would rule down by contact.
  • Riley Cooper led the Eagles with five catches for 59 yards, including a couple of key first downs early in the game.

Defense

  • The Eagles pass rush has been much improved over the last few games. Tonight the Birds picked up eight sacks, dominating the offensive line of the Giants.
  • Connor Barwin came up with a sack and a forced fumble on Manning in the first Giants’ drive. It was the third straight game with a sack for Barwin, whose big play forced the Giants to punt.
  • Barwin picked up another sack in the second quarter. Barwin bullrushed Justin Pugh, and then got through him with a nice spin move to take down Manning. Barwin added a third sack before the night was over.
  • Emmanuel Acho and Trent Cole combined for a sack in the first quarter.
  • Vinny Curry picked up a sack on the final play of the first quarter. Curry would add a second sack later in the game.
  • Brandon Bair picked up his first sack of the season.
  • Fighting through a groin injury, DeMeco Ryans was able suit up and gut it out. Ryans stuffed Andre Williams for no gain in the second quarter.
  • Brandon Graham got a sack and forced a fumble.

Special Teams

  • With Chris Polk out, rookie Josh Huff handled kickoff return duties.
  • Donnie Jones pinned the Giants down at their own eight-yard line in the second quarter.
  • Cody Parkey went 2-2 on his field goal attempts.
  • Darren Sproles contributed a 43-yard punt return.

Final Thoughts

A very comforting and convincing win.

The Eagles for the time this year put together an orderly and efficient win, and they did it against a Giants team that had been playing very well. This was a crushing blow that the Eagles delivered to New York.

The Giants had ideas of coming into Philadelphia and taking control of the division, and the Eagles just beat them down.

The biggest thing I take from tonight’s game is how important it is for this team to be able to run the football. With LeSean McCoy working at full strength, everything else seems to click much better. The Eagles need to be able to run every week like they did tonight.

The team now heads into the bye week sitting pretty at 5-1. They’ve survived a very rocky road through the first month and a half of the season. They’ve picked up some big wins, and have taken care of things within the division. They’ve earned some rest and some time to prepare for the difficult road trips ahead of them. They’re only a few more weeks away from getting even stronger with the returns of Mychal Kendricks, Evan Mathis, and Jason Kelce on the horizon.

GOOD Morning Eagles Fans. What a night!!!

Great way to enter the bye week. Little Eli is still having nightmares about our defensive line. Credit to the whole team on that one. Both lines played their asses off. The offense was determined to run the ball, and what can you say about a defensive line that was in the face of Manning all night. They were strong against the run and pass both. It all starts up front and both sides really stepped up and took control.

Now go get healthy and rested during the bye week. Great game.

GO BIRDS !!!!!!!!

Just watched the game on nfl game rewind. This was really a perfect game on both sides of the ball. The two ints were horrible though and can not be justified but besides that foles picked the Giants apart. The running game was awesome. Felt real good to see shady look like his old self again. Glad to see curry get some sacks. Kid just knows how to get to the qb and was really impressed with the big kid beau Allen. He got major push up front just about every snap he was in there. The defensive playing calling was great. Loved the blitzes Davis dialed up. A shut out against a rival that talked shit all week just leaves a damn good feeling

The birds shocked me — I did not think the birds were going to win last night ( I thought the division was going to be a 3 way tie of 4wins and 2 loses ) But both the Eagles and Cowboys won and are now 5-1.

2 things –
Casey Mathews is starting to play decently , I saw him make some good reads last night . Nick Foles needs to do these 2 things , Step into his throws , and LOOK before throwing the damn Ball! both those INTs were pure laziness on his part . The throws he missed were arm throws , no core , no legs which is why balls float .

LB’s Barwin & Cole set the Tone early and often and was carried out by the Entire Defense…
Early in the Game when GIants RB Aaron WIlliams ran over Safety Malcolm Jenkins, I thought oh no, GIants are going to pound the rock all game long..
Instead the Eagles Def Front 7 completely obliterated the GIants OL and got into Eli’s head early on…
the DB’s had nice coverage most of the game as well so some credit to the entire Defense, Scheming and Execution

did any one else notice trey burton try to side step a giant defender in the backfield the way Shady does and then hit the edge. Burton had the vision but his right leg wasn’t strong enough and agile as Shady to pull that skill set maneuver. He was easily tackled. After seeing another try to be Shady I have a much better respect for his skill set.

Burton was the second coming of Percy Harvin when Urban was at Flordia. Then, no O Muschamp came to town and ruined everything Burton had going. If Burton starts practicing at RB he’ll be able to make that cut. Keep in mind Burton can also throw the football. I’m still waiting for when we drop in some wild duck that Chip had in his play book at Oregon. Burton will be perfect for that.

Maybe the Eagles should Release QB Matt Barkley..
Most Teams do not carry 3 QB’s any longer..
Polk should have been Short-Term IR List to begin with and a 3rd RB should have been on the Initial 53 Man Roster.. You cannot go in NFL Games with only 2 Healthy RB’s which I have been screaming about since Week #1

Speaking Monday, Eagles coach Chip Kelly refused to rule Darren Sproles (sprained MCL) out for Week 8.
Kelly believes Sproles could be sidelined only “a week or two.” The Eagles are on bye in Week 7. Per Kelly, the team isn’t planning to make a roster move at running back, an indication they truly believe Sproles’ injury is minor. At the latest, Sproles’ status will be updated early next week. Despite Kelly’s optimism, Sproles is probably going to miss at least one game.

I’ve taken a brief hiatus from here (nothing new). But I’m back

What a win. Casey Matthews has impressed the past few games, he’s really showing his potential now and Billy Davis is putting him in the right spots to succeed.

Demeco Ryans, still the true leader and MVP of this defense. Hes playing some of the best football of his career. If we lose him for any reason, we will struggle on defense. Why do you think kendricks, acho and matthews keep making positive plays. Look at the man next to them.

Barwins is playing at a all pro level, he should be a probowler this year if he keeps playing at this level.

Vinny Curry is an absolute monster, big bulky, long arms, strong. Just an animal. He needs to be starting, just move him all over the line. Graham too is showing his real potential and seems to have found a spot that hes comfortable with

Shady is Shady. Best RB in the league. Oline struggled in those 1st few games, now theyre getting comfortable with each other and guys are getting healthy so Shady will improve. A RB is only as good as their line in front of them, no matter how talented the RB is.

Foles managed the game well yesterday but he still continues to throw up ducks
ducks. So tired of him making 1 or 2 poor decisions each game. We need consistency from him. When you get out of the pocket, and noone is open, throw the freaken ball away. Dont force

Other than that, im very happy with what ive seen so far. Special teams amazing, the very best in the NFL and in the history of the Eagles franchise.

Lets keep this going!

Go Birds!

No, this is Chip Kelly’s team, all the players are sprockets, working in unison to make the machine go. Oddly enough, when Shady struggled, the other parts helped get us wins, even in the 49ers game, the special teams kept us in it. Nick threw two stupid picks yesterday (Vick like), however, he also made more plays that helped lead to 27 offensive points.

The success of the running game is critical to this Eagles team going into the future….not Chip Kelly’s coaching!

We are in a tough dog fight with the Cowboys for the division. Romo is playing well and making game winning plays for his team and our Qb leads the league in turnovers.

We have do what we did yesterday rely on the run game which will open up play action passes and give Nick a lot of easy throws.
Going forward we need this to be Shady’s team with Shady McCoy has the dominate player on the field. The Giants foolishly refused to play 8 men in the box and Shady gashed them this opened up the play-action pass . The Running game, Dominate Defense, and Special teams are the key to us winning from here out…we are going to have to try and reduce Foles’ impact on the game…again…he leads the league in turnovers and if we are going to keep up with the Cowboys who have a really easy schedule now where our schedule gets tough….we need Shady to be at a very high level

The negative nitwits are not going to like this but LaNe Johnson really had a good night, particularly in the run game. On several of the big runs he was taking his block 8-10 yards down the field. He can get better in the passing game but it is no coincidence that the run game has improved since his return?

Thought also the run game improved with nick foles taking snaps under center as opposed to the shotgun, giving shady ,a chance to survey the field…there’s no need to respond to the kools, and songs who have agendas …I’m not discounting two picks were stupid, but you take them away and he has a 107 rating..it illustrates it’s fixable and he will eventually ,get it all together ..it was extremely impressive the way the O line held up and allowed tight ends to leak out into the plays ,as opposed to staying in and blocking to help the deficient line play..this is not any one players team (just ask me Sean) ..it’s chips team ,it’s foles team ,and shady is the best player on that side of the ball…when the defense plays like it did ,nobody ,not the stinking cowgirls ,not anybody is better ..I’m enjoying jerry jones talking shit in October ..didn’t know pulling on your face makes your ass closer to your brain ,I’d guess…

Since 2005 the Cowboys are 15-21 in the month of December – when divisions are won and games are important. That doesn’t mean that the Cowboys will lose again this year, but it sure has been a trend for a long time.

If the Cowboys lost a couple offensive lineman, like the Eagles have, they would be 1-5.

The Cowboys go as DeMarco Murray goes… If Murray is shut down and Romo has to throw the ball 40 times per game like Foles has had to this season, you will see a new turnover leader.

I guess koolbreeze could say, it’s Murray’s team.

Good win! few players I was happy for the last few weeks. Brandon graham is playing really well when his number has been called he is still a bust and not an every down player but he is involved and an important part of the defense. he looks to be having fun and enjoying his role really happy for the guy bc he never gave up in spite of all the roadblocks his career has had. Casey Mathews looks like he finally has some confidence within the defense he is still a shrimp but he looks confident in what he is doing. he made a nice play last night against the run still couldn’t bring the rb down and would have ended up on his back if reinforcements didn’t show up but that’s ok. he is a back up but his confidence is important if he is going to step in and help. Shady got back into the grove thanks to the line and him being a little more patient. I truly believe he was concussed in Washington and his pride would not let him allow him to be officially diagnosed with one. he played like he was trying not to take a clean shot to the head knowing he was still having symptoms. three games removed you feel a little more confident. Anybody who has played football knows you have quiet moments all alone in your helmet when you are like am I ok and you need to concentrate on not dying, that’s an concussion! These guys are pros and short of being knocked could they can manage it.This would have been like his third concussion on record and he would start become concussion prone. That is big when you start talking future contracts ect. BTW did you guys see his sidelines handshakes lol he is the football version of Willie Mays Hayes lol kind of corny if you ask me lol

Nu greenmBol…you really handout them compliments lmao..he’s still a shrimp..(Matthews) ha..it’s like saying he’s the tallest midget at the circus ..Brandon graham ,agreed but you need throw curry into that conversation..he’s been impressive ..the dude Barwin is really balling and is playing as is cox at a very high level..the city and this team always had the mentality of gang green ..defense started under buddy ,bud Carson ..and Jeff Fischer ..it’s been a long time since the broad street bullies ..house of pain crossed over the parking lot from the vet …it’s all about personality on a defense that for way too long has been absent ..r.i.p. Jim Johnson ..he was fist pumping all night long…

lol Casey read that play he jumped right in the hole hit the rb before he got really started and nothing happened the he started falling backward until another played ran and hit him in his back to move Williams backwards lol he is just too small. Billy Davis is doing a great job of mixing up the personnel and letting them do things they are good at. Cox and Barwin are physical studs they look the part and play the part something Chip was focusing on when he came in. Yeah Curry has played well but I never questioned his ability to play and I don’t think he did either where as Mathews looked like he had no confidence at all. it is just good to see him playing good instinctual football something he should at least be capable of physical limitations aside.

Oh and anybody who kept crying Sproles should get more carries this is why he hasn’t and never will tote the rock more than 10 times per game. That was a dirty play he got hurt on too he was down whistle blown and the giants lineman continue to bend him back out of frustration, just trying to inflict some pain (I been there).lol when guys get a chance they will try to make him feel every bit as small as he is. If you want to see a belly to back suplex just let Sproles carry the ball a few times between the tackles lol

Davis called a great game on Sunday. I’m still wondering if this defense is fools gold though. That D Line looked like a beast! or was the Giants O line just terrible? need to see more of that type of pass rush. But the press coverage on the WR’s was key! honestly that’s what the CB’s on this team do best. Let them use their long arms to jam the WR’s early. Whatever it was the defense gained a lot of confidence coming out of that game and the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time!

And Nu…I totally agree with you about that being a dirty play on Sproles.

The Giants took a few cheap and dirty shots…the Offensive line man who tried to spear Cox, the Sproles play….cheap and dirty

If you’re the Lions do you move on from Johnson or Suh this summer they can’t afford to keep both.

Q Demps starts because of injury and continues health issues of Safety Stevie Brown who is still not 100% back from his ACL Injury of last Season
Demps was signed as the 3rd/Back-up Safety and Kick-Off Return-man..

Pman that sounds grassy knoll like absurdly like a leap of faith ,Kelce has been projected for Carolina ,there’s still terrain between now and then to navigate ..perhaps against different formations ,perhaps goal line the coaches would prefer a more stout presence ….molk is smallish ,and we all know of Kelleys preference that size matters …been working on the final ten opponents and it appears that the east will have one team take a step back in my estimation…Dallas did the rest of the league justice by laying a blueprint vs the champs ,and executed it ,with there personnel. This Dallas team meets a wounded (perhaps ) mortal animal in the Giants ..I still contend harbaugh ends up here in my estimation ,coughlin is a dead man walking..the giants if ever they were to arise from the dead ,it’s seemingly Dallas is there comfort zone ,where the GMen are 4-1 out of there last 5 .in Jerry’s dome .will Cruz injuries deflate or motivate the tail between there legs giants ,who know they yapped it up ,coming into philly after lighting it up to the tune of 3 games where they lit up the scoreboard ..I see this as custers last stance ..one week we want to bury them dead and this week against the stinking cowgirls it GO G MEN ..you gotta love it

Why don’t we poll game by game analysis for foles ..in arizona ,and henceforth ..it’s an interesting exercise ,in match ups vs different defenses at home and on the road ..also I predict the nick foles that showed a glimmer of development vs the Giants with a complimentary run game ,will close with the insertion of Mathis and Kelce and the final 5 games ,he will be at pro bowl level .the one caveat ,all the parts return and no others depart ..that’s a big matzoh ball ,I know ..but ,in a perfect world ..I sense an exciting last 5 games with very winnable games vs dead and busied ,disinterested giants and Washington opponents to close it out (rest guys even ) ..the stretch from thanksgivings end vs Dallas then Seattle and Dallas again on the schedule is exciting ,as wee get 2 out of those 3 here ,where finally this team has some vet swagger at the Linc…Andy never sensed the importance of that ..I think Kelly preaches it..he knows home field is essential in the science of playoff football in the nfl..with the emergence of a swagger after a shutout will this team potentially match up against arias and the cards two birds of a feather at 5-1 in my backyard here ..I’m in sec 122 row 12 with my brethren birds …the cards play at Oakland so conceivably it’s a combine 10-2 bird fest..I never knew a cardinal to win against an eagle here in the desert ,the eagle eats it’s prey ..6-1 ..and the GMen deflate Jerry’s face in jerry dome …it’s a bye week so let’s wish upon a star ..

The eagles were 3-3 last year after 6 games they actually didn’t have a bye week until week 12 ..chips first at the helm ,last year after the bye they played the az.cardinals ..home and won 24-21 ..they went 7-1 to close out last season ,this along with 5-1 at the bye ,is a very hot dam 12-2 …we are emerging ,and changing ..chip was quoted that he approached last years bye to develop new schemes …this team has shown an ability to make in game and strong half time adjustments …chip planned this by week in June and knew with 4 pre season games and 6 that would be a perfect half way point with 10 games left to close in the stretch …Dallaswill take the ball out of rooms hands with demarco Murray ,and play stout defense ,I believe chip will do that and more as Kelce and Mathis return and with Kendrick’s and sproles on deck ,hopefully after the bye ,chips ,taking his toy and tinkering with it ,with all new schemes ..his words ..not mine they close 0n ther current 14 game pace ..we are now if the playoffs started the number one seed in the NFC..with nick foles and all his warts and two offensive line man of pro bowl caliber out for the first half as well as the qb of our defense ..and we just pitched a shutout vs the high scoring GMen ..let’s wrap all our songs ,Kool, dead fish in the paper bag ..where trash belongs ..
