Eagles-Cardinals Preview

sprolesRemember that shutout against the Giants on Sunday Night Football?  It certainly feels a lot longer than it actually has been.

The Eagles (5-1) head on the road to Arizona, a location that hasn’t been too friendly in recent years.  Waiting for them; another 5-1 football team where questions about “are they as good as their record” linger.

If you to merely look at the Cardinals team from a statistical standpoint, you wouldn’t be all that impressed minus being number one in the league against the run.  You would recognize a few vets and some of their young guys, but on paper the Eagles are certainly the better all-around team.

OFFENSE

The Cardinals best offensive player is still Larry Fitzgerald, the first name that comes to mind and has been a player who has really hurt the Eagles throughout his career.  He is joined by another big bodied wide receiver Michael Floyd, but the tandem only has a combined 42 receptions and 3 touchdowns this season.  Quarterback Carson Palmer is back after some time missed earlier in the season, and second year running back Andre Ellington has the ability to rip off the big play, while serving as a dual threat; leading the team in receptions.

The Eagles are coming off a game where their offensive line and rushing attack was reminiscent of last season.  Foles had all the time in the world under center, and even Riley Cooper contributed to the offense.  McCoy had some “pep in his step,” it was a very solid outing.

DEFENSE

The Cardinals have lost a lot of players to injury, and really struggle to generate any kind of pass rush, and are dead last in the league at defending the pass.  They have a bend but don’t break defense, they will let you amass large chunks of yards but they will hold you to field goals once in the end-zone.

The Eagles defense put together one of the best performances in a very long time prior to the bye week. They kept blitzing and blitzing and put a hurting on Eli Manning.  Their secondary looked respectable, they were terrific against the run, and they sustained the effort for the entire game.

PREDICTION

Have you ever wanted to be so wrong with something?   That is what I’m feeling about the outcome of this game.  I believe the Eagles are the better (5-1) team going into this game, but I worry about Foles and his turnover vulnerability.

If the Eagles are unable to get their run game going, Foles will be forced to throw, and that is exactly what the Cardinals defense wants.  They want to disguise looks and force Foles to make mistakes.

-The Eagles are going to have trouble finding someone to match up with Ellington.  His speed, and how the Cardinals move him around will be a challenge for the linebackers.  Fitzgerald always brings his “A” game, and even his “B” game will present match-up issues for the secondary.

-I think the Eagles have a lead going into the fourth quarter, but ultimately fall short with their inability to convert on some key third down conversions.

-Their defense commits some costly penalties trying to hold their own with the tall and physical receivers.

-A late field goal by their rookie kicker keeps his perfect conversion percent in place.

Cardinals 27  Eagles 26

Bruce Arians loves to throw long passes -( he had Big Ben and Andrew Luck humming the ball through the air)
This current team with Drew Stanton and Andre Ellington was a game manager short pass just don’t turn over the football and win by a field goal team. It must of killed Bruce Arian to play like that. With his DL banged up and his offense not turning the ball over will he change the platform now with Carson Palmer back? Andre Ellington leads the team in pass receptions as a running back. They are playing him like Brian Westbrook and succeeding.

Both these teams are eerily similar and have matchup problems they can exploit.

Carson Palmer will give the defense a chance get some turnovers if they continue their play from the Giants games. Hes a statue back there in both the Skins and Raiders game pressure made him throw at least 4 or 5 pickable throws. They cant run the ball IMO so theres a chance to dial up a ton of pressure on him early.

This is a game where Foles has to take what is given and make the most of his shots when he has them. He can not make throws like he did in the Giants game that led to picks. Petersen takes alot of chances and relies on his speed to make up for his mistakes. We should get a couple of shots to make plays.

Tight ends will be a big part of the offense again. Ertz should get a chance to shine.

Cards have a ton of momentum and Seahawks and 49ers falling on their faces I dont see Arians letting this game slip away. Especially after they blew games last year that kept them out of the playoffs.

Cards win in a nail biter. However I could see another Eagle defense go beserk in the sack department and change the entire complexion of the game.

I also dont think you play Sproles this week.

As I’ve stated I’m here in the desert..it’s going to be a game won in the trenches and i sense a huge game as does Izzell as the Rudd birdies can’t cover tight ends ,so it can assume as a safety valve they’ll be leaking into plays ..defensively to be fair they’ve really just been mediocre..the play of Carson Palmer and lack of mobility of both qbs will bring into focus both offensive lines..I’m already seeing a ton of green as 90degrees and sunny has drawn the dream trip into focus !after a bye???with two weeks to prepare !I truly believe well see chip play with his chemistry set and be creative ,and innovative??it’s also personal after dick head arias challenged the college offensive geniuses manhood??he’ll pay ??as will the cards who will fold em…

Cardinals are a suspect 5-1 and, like the Eagles, the meat of their schedule starts now.

They aren’t an offensive juggernaut
They are susceptible on defense
They have yet to put together a full 60 min game.

I like the Eagles chances. I’m 60/40 in the Eagles favor even with it being a road trip out west.

TS, I’m with you. I just don’t see how this team is 5-1. Although they did beat San Diego and San Fran; both of which are two solid wins. But when I look at this team, I just don’t see a top 5 NFL team like many think. The one thing I did hear is that they do not make many mistakes at all. I guess we’ll see.

Very important game with playoff implications. GB, Dallas, Arizona, Detroit, with Carolina or NO winning the south leaves 1 spot open for SF, Seattle the Eagles. The Eagles really cant afford to have losses vs SF and Arizona because of tie-breakers. 10-6 may leave them out of the playoffs. If you believe SF and/orSeattle is going to make a run we must have the tie-breaker with Arizona because we already lost it with SF with Seattle on the horizon also.

making the playoffs is never easy – Nick Foles taking over for Vick and Bennie Logan taking over for Sopoaga sparked the birds last season. This year the birds are hanging on for dear life hoping their offense can keep their head above water waiting for Kelce and Mathis to return plus Kendricks and Sproles.

I like the Eagles 27-23 in a close Game decided late in the 4th Quarter
I believe the Eagles Front 7 will put enough pressure on Palmer to get him opff his spot and create some Turnovers..
This Scat/Back A Ellington on Screens or wheel routes concerns me a bit
I don’t see Sproles being Active and neither will Kelce until next Week versus the Texans.. I do see LB Kendricks returning, the Cardinals OL is improved from recent Seasons but the OT’s can be beat with consistent Pressure.
The Key, as in most games versus Pocket QB’s, is pressure right up the middle and force Palmer to move off his spot and to his left or right where is in prone to make poor throws..

While this is an important game (obv) In fact a win really sets up a playoff birth……but regardless….

I Don’t think its as crucial as you think it is Dag. Eagles need to go 2-2 over their next 4. 3-1 would be ideal. I think the Tenny and Carolina games are going to be relatively easy, so a split vs Ariz and GB would be gravy. But even losing both of those (providing wins over Tenn and Car) put the Eagles at 7-3 heading into a final 6 (of which they’ll win 4 min). Eagles should finish the season at 12-4 or 11-5.

I have a more optimistic view of the playoff chances…..The Eagles are neck and neck for the Division, and the 2 wildcard spots right now go to…

Eagles 5-1
Det 5-2
SF 4-3
Sea 3-4
Chic 3-4
NYG3-4
NO 2-4
STL 2-4

Now honestly….NYG, Chic and NO, STL are finished for the wildcard. (NO does have a chance at the Division, but otherwise….)

So the 2 wildcards….as it stands….go to Eagles, Det or SF.

Det has @ATL, @Ariz, @NE, @Chic @GB….There are probably 3 losses there…..if only New Orleans had handed off (or knelt down) instead of having Brees drop back to pass 10x the last 6 mins we wouldn’t even be having this discussion….

SF has @NO @NYG at 1:00, @Sea, Sea, SD and Ariz…there are 3 losses there…that puts them at 6 losses (minimim) on the season.

They are sitting atop their division (unlike the Eagles – yes I’m being facetious ’cause this was a dumb comment) with the Saints being the only completion and they are a game and a half/two games behind.

For all the problems Carolina has, being division leaders isn’t one of them.

I was unaware that stating the obvious: Cowboys are going to win more than 8 game this year and they are the Ealges only competition in the East was enough to get your panties in a bunch.

My bad.

2. The “legit” comment wasn’t a reference to the Ealges. it was in reference to my comment that the Cardinals don’t look legit at 5-1.

I know you’re the Ealges personal cheerleader and all, but you can put your pom poms away. I wasn’t criticizing the Eagles in the slightest, yet you seem hell bound and determined to interpret any comment I make that way.

Word is that Kendricks will not play again this week. Sproles looks to be a game-time decsion. This team has continued to win despite the injuries, but you have got to figure that at somepoint it will catch up to them. Suprisingly the linebackers played well last game, let’s hope that they can continue until Kendricks can get back on the field.

Sproles is not a player easily replaced, but Polk is said to be healthy. At some point this season I would expect for Josh Huff to make his presence felt, maybe this will be the game.

I like the birds coming off of the bye week. The Cards are tough, and they have a very good head coach who will have them prepared and motivated.

**Eagles Trade Deadline News**

I’m hearing from a source that the Eagles have strong interest in up and coming outside LB Arthur Brown of the Ravens. They had interest in him at the beginning of the year and have maintained the interest.

We’ll see what becomes of this if anything…

A move like this would indicate to me that the Eagles are all in this year and feel they’re a piece away from going far and I agree. This league is wide open, their is no dominant team emerging, unless you want to call this latest cowboys surge dominance, (we’ve seen them do this before).

So if were gonna go for it all, this is the year..

Arthur Brown is not an OLB he is to tiny. If the birds have interest in him then the Kendricks season’s return outlook must not be good and/or they don’t believe in Marcus Smith succeeding ever at ILB.
Dion Jordan returns to Dolphins for game 7. So far having Graham and that 2nd round pick ( Jordan Matthews ) is heavily tilted in the eagles favor for a trade that didn’t happen. The birds probable don’t draft Marcus Smith if they traded for Dion Jordan though.

I am not sure who said Brown was an OLB but
Arthur Brown is a ILB, which is where the Eagles Need Depth
Marcus Smith!! is not a ILB, everyone knows that and was not drafted for that – The Purpose of obtaining an Arthur Brown is to have a replacement for DeMeco Ryans by 2015/2016. Having an inside duo of Kendricks/Brown would be a nice ILB Set for the next 4-5 Years..

I don’t think Brandon Graham is gone for 2015. They gave Brown a ridiculous 6 year rookie deal but it finally is a bargain in 2015. He will make 3 million in cap space with only half being per paid in true 2015 money the other half was a signing bonus. For a situational pass rusher that is good value. For 5 years Brandon Graham was a salary cap anchor but finally he is a bargain in 2015. For 2015 to cut or trade Graham would count 1.5 million against cap and only save 1.5 in money. I would keep him for that .

You knock the ILB approach to Smith…but I am starting to warm up to him in the mold of how Mike Mayock compared Lawrence Timmons.

In THIS DEFENSE….he could be versatile as hell from that position. Outside of the Gore play he hasnt shit the bed at the position and Davis had him in multiple position to make plays out of it based on his athletic skills.

Still way to early on the kid. To freaks on the inside like him and Kendricks would be good especially in nickel coverage.

They are going to go at Bradley Fletcher early and often. If Floyd starts getting busy could be a long ass game.

That DLine has to come out balling. Palmer is a statue and still believes in his arm even at 90% they are going to give the Eagles chances….and we will give them a bunch. Nate Allen cant be blowing assignments either.

Trying to understand the logic of Maclin replacing Sproles on punt returns if Sproles cant go. First thing is in the 4 plus years Maclin has been given his limited opportunities at punt return he hasn’t been very good. Second he is by far the best receiver on this team with a injury history why would you take any chances with him back there returning punts. Its hard for me to believe there isn’t another viable option to throw out there if Sproles cant do it this week.

Ok guys it’s my dream weekend here in the desert,as my beloved green birds head west ,and prove, who is the best bird in the NFL.First if anyone’s coming out to see the game ,Eagles headquarters here is in Scottsdale the Rock Bar 4245 n craftsman court …the game more importantly ,from a local slant ..the Arians ,college offense comments have added fuels to the fire ,heating up this desert battle,as chip has had all of two weeks to prepare ,new college wrinkles to his attack..key match ups Ertz vs safety Deonne Bucannon..Hess ranked 77th in the nfl safety’s having been targeted 20 times vs qbs this year allowing 19 completions.. 95% leagues worst..he’s giving up 30 lbs..to ertz??this is vital !which must be exploited by foles??the cards as I read the local slant !are expecting to use there stout number one ranked rushing defense to force foles to beat them ??the cards blitz as frequently as any nfl team and expect foles to be the pivotal key to victory?the Cards are tough 7-1 in last 8 @home…the cards number one offensive weapon Ellington has had limited practice as has sproles ..both are playing possum as I expect both to be vital pieces in this matchup..cards rank 31st vs pass and 1st vs rush..the first number is a bit of an aberration as teams are usually slinging the ball in 4th quarters vs cards padding those stats ..the cards score 19.8 points a game as the green birds score a league best 30.5 pts..the cards also have the 31st ranked pass rush…this is nicks contract game in my opinion ..he Tallis 300 plus yds ..he throws for his second passing rating above 100 this season and at 6-1 ..Arians is a college drop out 27-24 …the bad sat that must change if this is to come to be..nick foles has thrown for 30 yds or more 17 times this season ,he’s 1 of 17 …this has to improve as big plays will be there for the Taking…I see the edge on pass rush to eagles and special teams …the game will be matchup friendly for the birds ..but…only if nick foles keeps songs.. and Kool off the post game boards …I’ll be there ..hoping this is just the 1st time I see my birds as the supercool is here in feb….c’mon guys ..keep my dream and others alive

Here is the preview. The NFC South will be won by someone with a record around .500. I see the Panthers at 8-7-1. That leaves seven teams vying for five spots. I don’t think ten wins gets it done in the NFC. So you already lost to the Niners and will most likely lose to the Packers and maybe the Seahawks. You can’t lose all of these games. This is an absolute must win. If you go 10-6 and lose to every contender in the conference you are out. If the Eagles lose everyone needs to immediately drop them from the top ten in any and all power rankings because they have no power. They can’t beat a good team! This is starting to remind me of Andy Reid where we beat all the punks and couldn’t beat quality teams. If Chip is for real he needs to start winning games like this one.

Can’t we please relax with the “can’t beat a good team” nonsense?

Did they, or did they not go to Indy and win? Is Indy not one of the best teams in the league?

Did they, or did they not, have the ball in their hands, on the road at SF, watching a winning TD slide through a WRs fingers? Did they, or did they not compete in that game?

Did they, or did they not completely annihilate a divisional opponent who had previously won 3 straight?

Eagles need to go 2-2 over the next 4 and if they do will be fine. 3-1 would be gravy. I think they’re going to win this week, with rusty Carson palmer playing the biggest factor. Then a “much too close for comfort” squeaker win the following week at Houston, followed by shredding Carolina at home before heading on the road and losing to a streaking GB.

Last year’s playoff matches. Chargers- lost, Chiefs-lost, Broncos-lost. Beat Pack without Rodgers. Beat Ariz on bad calls or they would have made the playoffs. We did beat the Colts this year so I give them that. But like I said, you have to beat Ariz because you can’t lose to every team fighting for those WC slots. Winning the division is no longer a foregone conclusion. And we are definitely not winning the division at 10-6. I don’t see Dallas going 4-5 the rest of the way like they are playing right now. And let’s not forget in two match ups last year, we got smoked the first game and barely won the second game. Our boy from Austin grew up worshiping the Star and he is a little intmimidated by it still at this point in his career. I don’t feel that confident given last year and the way Dallas is playing right now that we could beat them either game.

Colts game was a gift this year. Similar to Arizona game last year.

Arizona is just not that good a team right now. They were better last year. And maybe I’m underestimating them, but I don’t see the Birds (Eagles that is) losing this game.

With that said – you gotta hope the Cowboys lose the game and we beat Seattle. lol Because, barring any insane injuries or Romo’s back going out – the division is between the Birds and The Boys. All these NFC games really start to add up.

Exactly my point ts. Glad we are seeing eye to eye. You can’t lose to Ariz, SF, Sea and GB and think you are getting in. Nor do you deserve to at all. If they lose all those games and one against Dallas, I hope they don’t make it because they would vbe a fraud who has not improved from last year. Here is the thing. They are fixing the Spec teams and pass rush and now the run D and offense are broken. That’s always the Eagles. You fix one thing, they break something else. That’s why they are 10th in my paowe rankings.

you can’t say the colts game was a gift then ignore that 49er’s CB Chris Culliver was holding Riley Cooper on that 4th quarter incompletion in the end zone. The Boykin non call interference turned Jenkins interception benefited the eagles in the Colt game and the Culliver non call interference call benefited the 49ers in the loss.

You mean the San Fran game where the offense put up a goose egg?

Not even remotely the same thing.

There are missed calls throughout games – but like you can’t throw an interception late, late calls tend to have a direct impact on the game.

Like I said arguing this point is silly. An incredibly bad call at the very end of a close game swung the game in the favor of the other team.

This isn’t Eagles specific. Eagles have been screwed in the past as have other teams. But you don’t get to be outraged when a call doesn’t go your way, and then not acknowledge when one does.

I never understood why fans of a team have the complete inability to have an honest dialogue about their team.

A gift is a gift. But the Colts game ended on some pretty shitty play calling by the refs that – if it doesn’t happen – in all likelihood they lose. It’s a win. It counts.

But in a discussion on whether the Birds can beat quality teams – the one semi-ish good team (I don’t think the Colts are that good overall, playing in the AFC south helps them quite a bit) they played (and beat) was won more out of being lucky than being talented.

Complaining about that just seems silly.

since Howie became GM the Birds have alternated DL first round picks with OL first round picks ( I include Marcus Smith as a DL because he was drafted to be a pass rusher) on that theory I think birds will draft OL in first round. (Graham,Watkins, Cox, Johnson, Smith )
I would like the birds to draft CB multiple times in 2015 like they did WR this year in Matthews and Huff. 2 bites at the apple to find a starting CB.

Good Stuff EHL

I know you didn’t mention any RB’s, but this Draft may be loaded with some ones and Sproles is not getting any younger, though he’s been
The Eagles MVP so far this year..
How would Nebraska’s Abdullah look in Green
To learn the System and be tutored by Sproles for a year and
Then be ready for 2016
Or a Gurley from Georgia or the RB at Wisconsin
Or the big RB from Mich State..
The way RB’s are undervalued in the Draft anymore,
Some of these backs will be 2nd/3rd Round Selections
If Eagles finish strong With 11-12 Wins as we all hope, they may end up
With the 24th thru 28th Selection range of each Round
I am not advocating an early Pick with McCoy & Sproles both under Contract
But who knows, I do believe they need to add a quality Back
Into the mix for Depth purposes and to prepare for a eventual replacement for Sproles.. This Abdullah returns Punts/Kicks also

It will be an interesting Draft come 2015
With the emphasis on Passing and stopping the Pass
There will be lots of WR’s Pass Rushers and CB’s high on many Teams list
Looking around on How many Teams have gone QB the last 2-3 Drafts
And the long-term deals that many young QB’s gave signed with their current Teams.. There may as not be as many QB’s that go early
I count a few Teams like the Titans,TB Bucs as looking at QB Early
Some Teams with aging QB’s may have to start looking to the Future with a mid-round Pick to develop a QB, teams like the Giants,Steelers,Saints,
Cowboys,Arizona,Chargers & probably need young depth to groom..
Add 49ers who have no viable QB if Kaepernick goes down

I go back to RB as being a hot Position for 2015 Draft
Look around the NFL, and many Teams need sone help
Or youth at the RB Position
Teams like the Patriots,Panthers,Falcons,TB Bucs,
Vikings,Colts, Cardinals,Dolphins,Chargers, Seahawks & Eagles
Which will make for a different type of Draft..

Then you Have Teams with High-profile QB that were DraftedcRecentky or have big Contracts making their Front Offices have to really decide on who their QB of the Future is and especially for the Teams who
Are underperforming..
The Bears with Cutler
The Jets with Geno Smith
The Bills will EJ Manuel who has been benched
The Redskins with the often injured RG3
Do the a Panthers go all in Newton if they finish .500
Or below in a weak division
The Rams go with Austin Davis and cut the chord with
Often injured Sam Bradford

If you go read the Barnwell article he writes about all the QB situations around the league, specifically concentrating on their salaries/cap hit situations.

Who can, or can not be cut. What the Qbs up for extensions might expect etc.

EX – Saints can cut Brees after this season without too much dead $$, but will pretty much have to cut Brees in 2016. Pats are basically stuck with a devlining Brady till 2018, 49ers can cut Krapernick pretty much any year without much of a Cap hit, But Chicago is stuck with Cutler till 2017.

Interesting stuff.

during one Seattle game the annoucers were speculating LT Russell Okung might not be in Seattle’s plan long term because of the contract Russell Wilson is going to get and another team could easily out bid Seahawks for Okung. That was pre Harvin trade though. Bobby Wagner, Wilson, and Okung all will demand top dollar.

If Harbaugh walks away or is shown the door if he doesn’t take Kap with him his 49er days may not be that long. They did that contract that way for a reason.

He’s not everyone’s type of QB but if he was available Kelly would be on his step day one.

Newton a solid 9 of 14 for nothing with a pick in a big game. Hope hope hope Birds get to host them in the playoffs.

Wilson looking very human. Pretty easy for him when no one could score against that team….little adversity and he’s dropping 13 of 23 with a pick. Remember, he could have kneeled down 25x in the SB and they still would have won.

I thought only Foles was allowed to struggle as a young QB!!

Agreed. I EXPECT this from Wilson, and also from Foles….but you are right…..there is a whole crew in here who cannot accept anything by 97% 372 ad 4 tds every game. (but not against the Raiders!)….

As for, Newton who is in his 4th year, obviously much less leeway. He’s developing (ed) a rep that he folds in big games and he’s 4 years in as a starter doing the same thing.

He just launched one into double coverage….but Benjamin bailed him with an amazing catch (kid looks good). Was that a good play? Hardly. People on here would destroy Foles for that throw….But Benjamin went up between 2 defenders and pulled it in. So I guess its $$!

TS probably juicy over that avoided safety in the endzone…sure…guy is strong…..no doubt….but he throws into coverage constantly.

Anyway….here’s hoping for a late Seattle FG and another tie!
