I’m Still On Board With Chip Kelly, But…..

ChipKelly3I believe Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is a tremendous innovator and offensive mind and he’s proven it in his first two seasons as a NFL head coach.  He has helped all his quarterbacks, Michael Vick, Nick Foles, and Mark Sanches and other offensive players put up numbers that they would never have been able to put up without him.  Nobody in the league stresses a defense horizontally like Kelly.

His innovation is being copied throughout the NFL and all over college football. I agree with him that there’s a not a big difference if you’re running the hurry up offense and not getting the first downs on third downs or if you’re running the offense at regular speeds and not getting first downs.  I don’t think it affects your own defense a great deal if you running regular speed or hurry up.  I do think you can put more pressure on the opposing defense with the hurry up offense.

I’m still on board with Kelly, but he can’t make the mistake of thinking he knows everything.  Making all of the personnel decisions and not leaning on others for advice has doomed many very smart people.  Humility is a quality that all of us need.  Every great coach has to know their limitations.

I look at the numerous former Oregon players such as Brandon Bair (Oregon), Taylor Hart (Oregon), Josh Huff (Oregon), Jeff Maehl (Oregon), Casey Matthews (Oregon), who are on the roster and I can’t help but believe that Kelly was the one who fought for the acquisition of these players.  Not one of them has been a major contributor on the football team.  Kelly is also the one who wanted to draft USC quarterback Matt Barkley, who has never even threatened for the starting quarterback spot.

Something went wrong concerning the decision-making regarding left cornerback Bradley Fletcher.  He’s been beaten many times this season, but Kelly and his defensive coordinator Billy Davis have defended him consistently.  I can understand standing behind your players, but you can’t let Fletcher cost the team a shot at the playoffs.  Kelly and Davis should have removed Fletcher from the lineup or changed the defense to give him some help over the top.  It makes no sense to continue to defend that mistake.  Everybody makes mistakes, but it has to be admitted to before it can be corrected.

We all have limitations and Chip Kelly must admit to his, especially at a time when he’s still learning the intricacies of the NFL.  In addition, the best NFL player personnel departments are team-oriented from the standpoint that they involve multiple people giving their input on personnel decisions.  We saw with Andy Reid that one person can’t do everything.

I’m very concerned about the talent evaluation part of the organization, which orchestrated a horrible draft in 2014.  The Eagles got very little production from the 2014 draft this season and it’s one of the reasons they’ll be watching the playoffs rather participating in them.  You’ve heard plenty of conversations about number one draft pick Marcus Smith.  I’ve been told that there are people in the organization who are questioning his desire to hit. I could believe it, but the fact that they don’t even want to send him down on the kickoff team or punt team says a lot.  Linebackers are supposed to major in getting off of blocks and getting to the football.  How do you explain drafting a linebacker, who doesn’t like to hit?

Only second-round pick Jordan Matthews has been a major contributor.  Unfortunately with the season on the line, Matthews has done a disappearing act, which isn’t a good sign.

Looking ahead at the aging that’s taking place on the offensive line with Jason Peters (32), Evan Mathis (33) and Todd Herremans (32), the Eagles will need to draft some quality talent on the offensive line very soon.  The lack of talent in the defensive secondary Bradley Fletcher, Cary Williams and Nate Allen and lack of depth at inside linebacker (Casey Matthews and Emmanuel Acho) make it a requirement that some quality draft selections are made in order for the Birds resupply those parts of the team.

Whatever the Birds did wrong in the 2014 draft must be corrected.  They can’t afford to make the same mistakes in 2015, which they made this year.

Completely agree G. As far as I can see it, Kelly’s one (and maybe only) weakness as a coach is with talent evaluation and player personel. People that were anti-Kelly from the jump are taking this opportunity to trash his system and everything about him.

I’d like those people to ask themselves this question….what other coach could take a 4-12 team with limited talent and turn out back to back 10-6 (possibly) seasons the following years. Oh, any by the way, he did that with 5 different people starting at the most important position in all of sports.

The people that hate on his fastbreak offence clearly are not watching the games. The problems that we had these past three weeks had nothing to do with offense scheme and everything to do with execution. Against Settle and Dallas guys were running WIDE open. You cannot ask much more from a schematic stand point. Had Sanchez connected, then the drives stay alive and our defense gets more of a rest.

People also like to kill him on the culture comment. This is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard. People … he made that comment to a practice squad player attempting to show humility by down-playing his role as the “offense genious”. He was, by no way, implying that talent doesn’t matter. The media turned that on its face and this fan base has ran with it.

People are also killing him for the D-Jax move which I also don’t agree with. Would they have been a better team THIS year with D-Jax…sure. But that move was made because D-Jax would cost a lot of money and last year’s draft was littered with top-end talent at the WR position. We have no idea how good mathews and huff will be. Typically receives take some time to acclimate to the NFL. Sure, this year rookie WRs are blowing up but my past standards Mathews had a very good rookie year. The D-Jax move cannot be evaluated for at least another year, in my opinion.

a horrible draft in 2014?????????? cmon man thats stupid

1st round – smith was a project from the start and nobody has any clue if he will develop or not… likely a bust but possibly not

2nd round – matthews – gonna be a stud, great rookie season

3rd round – huff – battled injuries early which may have hindered his ability to have a good rookie year. seems a little dumb and lacks focus but ive seen ability could develop into a strong slot wr

4th watkins – who knows, hasnt been given an opportunity. will be able to tell in another 2-3 years what he is

5th hart – who knows

6th reynolds who knows but probably shit

7th allen good dl depth, rotational early down run stopper

to call this draft a horrible one is stupid. rarely do you get 1 player let alone multiple that come in year 1 and make a difference and matthews made a difference so the draft is ok by me. jury out on 5 of 7 but thats pretty typical this early post draft

Henski, I’m the most patient guy on this board and I have never seen smith play but to not be on kick coverage? To get zero contribution from a young guy you drafted at an athletic position? I’m not ready to call him a bust but there is something fishy going on… I smell Danny Watkins!
Saw something online where MUDD says he is the biggest waste of talent he ever saw.. Says he was a gifted lineman who just didn’t care… How the F does that happen?

im smelling the same thing bro but i want confirmation first… my bottom line is fuck him if he is a bust he is a bust

if matthews is legit, if huff learns how to use his brain and focus, if watkins develops and if allen can progress then this draft was a huge success even if smith, bair and reynolds were busts

“This is the place that drafted me, and I want to end my career here,” Maclin said. “(When) the time’s right, it’ll get done. I know both sides have made it clear that we both want to be here.” Playing on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, Maclin has been one of the league’s best receivers this season, catching 82 passes for 1,269 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Eagles can ill afford to let him walk after shipping out DeSean Jackson last offseason.

Reading this article that highlights the age of the Oline, the gigantic holes in the secondary, and the complete lack of LB depth is exactly why the Eagles CANNOT trade up for Mariotta (who is not a sure thing in any respect).

They trade up and this team will crumble over the next 2-3 years. The rebuilding process (which I said this was 2 years back) is chugging along, but is not by any means finished.

There has been a huge overhaul among offensive skill players and defensive front 7. This coming year will see a concentration on D backfield and Oline depth. Foles heading into his 3rd starting season with maturing Matthews/Ertz and a still young Maclin could bode very very well.

Elephant in the room is McCoy’s $12,000,000 salary (and cap hit). I think they’ll eat it because they’ve got the space, but you never know.

Won’t be able to trade him at that #….so the only option would have to be cutting him (which would save $8 million vs the cap).

I cannot see them doing this because the PR would be really bad after the Desean mess.

But I can guarantee you its being discussed behind closed doors.

you know that year he pouted about money, do you forget already?

. Jackson was benched for a crucial game in Arizona after missing a team meeting. In a loss to the New England Patriots, he was sat down in the fourth quarter for a lack of effort and later sniped with his coach. He blatantly jogged on routes and sometimes didnt turn around to look for passes. He was petrified of getting hit, often stopping short on routes over the middle or diving to the ground instead of fighting for extra yardage. that year all his numbers plummeted. He spent pregame warmups on Thursday night game standing around with members of the defense and much of the game sulking on the sidelines. Then, when asked about the Eagles loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Jackson went into hyper-defensive mode.Jackson wouldn’t answer questions about whether he wasn’t talking to his teammates on the sideline, saying they knew what the situation was.

oh but dont let all the facts convince you he did. just ask him yourself like Lisa Salters did in 2012

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson told ESPN’s Lisa Salters that he didn’t give a full effort last season because he didn’t want to get injured before signing a new contract.

When asked about instances when his effort was questioned, Jackson said: “I let it get to me, even though I tried not to let it. I was trying to protect myself from getting hurt — now I’m just giving it all.”

Did you not watch the Eagles in 2011?????? because everyone locally and nationally that watched them would tell you he quit. desean himself told you the same..

No doubt that DeSean is a punk. But he is a punk with talent. Two things I think. 1) They screwed up by not get anything in return for him and 2) they probably make the playoffs if he is on the team this year. They would not have lost to Washington in Week 16 because Fletcher would have been covering someone other than DJax. They also probably win one other game that was close, Arizona or SF. Culture matters, but you can’t win with all choir boys. Personally, I would have kept Djax one more year because there was cap space. We will never know the whole story.

RB McCoy is here to stay for the 2015 Season for sure, beyond that, who knows. His Salary does drop to $9 million in 2016 & then down to $7.8 Million in 2017.. He’s had 1500 Rushes and 250 Receptions in his Career which is approx 1750 Touches total… He has 2 more Top end Seasons before his body starts to break down due to the law of averages.. He is a Special Talent

If it is at all possible…the Eagles MUST trade up for Mariota!

Chip…what are you going to do…die a slow death with QB’s that you know cant win…bust a move get your man who you can get at the rookie salary for the next few years and look to free agency to fill the holes on defense!

Chip you knew Foles was limited when you chose Mike Vick over him!

You have never been impressed with the limited, slow, weak armed Foles and his league leading turnovers and UNDER 60% passing.

Get your man Chip…your not all that good at drafting anyway…build the team around free agency…maybe get lucky with a few lower round picks…

Bust the move and get your man…Mariota!!

The eagles not making the playoffs this year had nothing to do with not having DJax. NOTHING at all. Front office incompetance and stubborness from the coaching staff is what did. From drafting a “project” in the FIRST ROUND to thinking that journeyman 3rd and 4th string CB’s were good enough to start and an arrogance that they are the smartest guys in the room are the reasons. We are philly fans who KNOW the game. Treat us as such and stop insulting our intelligence. Mix that with the inability to make adjustments and common sense decisions on Defense combined with the lack of creativity from our so called offensive genius and you have our 2014 Philadelphia Eagles.

They are who we thought they were.

Howie Roseman, Billy Davis and Chip all need to take long looks in the mirror and realize that humility, being honest with yourselves & as an entire staff, flexibility and being able to make in game adjustments is what makes a true winner. Anything else is the definition of insanity…..

But they have been making changes. Huge changes.

Next September, look at the team from the one that went 4-12.

Now not all are Kelly/Roseman picks, but look at the starting lineup changes from two years ago:

New QB, TE, 2 wrs Matthews/Huff who will be the $2 and 3 next year), RT, there will be a new RG. new NT, DE, 3 new LBs, new FS, and there will be 2 new CBs.

The only starting holdouts from 2 years ago will be McCoy, Peters, Mathis, Cox, Maclin and Kelce,

I mean, how fast do you think you can turn over an entire roster???

They started by prioritizing O players. Ertz, Matthews, Johnson, Huff, Sproles, and I will include Foles. This was obviously going to happen first as they hired Chip Kelly!

But they did also delve into the D a bit with Jenkins, Logan, and Smith. Yes the Smith pick hasn’t worked out (so far) but they addressed a need (D) with a first pick. That he is a failure so far isn’t really the point as about 60% of guys picked where he did flame out in the NFL.

Anyway, aside from picking a couple of OL this draft, it will be heavy on DBs.

Again, I told you all this would happen exactly in the order it did 2 years ago. You cannot overhaul an entire team in a season. It takes time. And it was smart to go Offense first, because it takes longer to get those guys acclimated to a system than it does LBs or DBs.

dude its a process. stud cbs dont grow on trees and why throw a shit load of money at byrd or ward when your cb’s are under contract and gonna get roasted anyway?

they were actually smart about their cb’s this offseason. they signed both cbs 2 years ago knowing they were average at best and signed them to be stop gaps… well now they are both gone, fletch and allen have no contract and carys salary is gonna be 8 million and they arent paying him that so he is out.

we are building reed cmon.

were they supposed to just cut cary and fletch with no replacements? and dont give me talib or revis. they both got huge deals by teams expected to compete now for the super bowl they werent coming here

and marcus smith. dude that jury is out man. give it time. is kalil mack a bust? clowney? denard? erick ebrON? and on and on and on. you could make a case that 50% or more of the first rounders are busts… give em time to develop…. theyre building there was 0 players they couldve got at 26 or later that wouldve changed our year this year. please….

just because we recognize the problem doesnt mean the eagles didnt they couldnt just cut cary and fletch, there were limited to no real options that fit with the direction this team was and is going man…

you gotta be smart about this shit….

the only thing i can think of that wouldve fixed the secondary was signing both revis and talib but if you do that you probably cant sign maclin, cox, kendrix, thronton… plus you wouldve took a big cap hit…

cmon

its year 2 of regular season games with this staff and this front office… year 2 of a full off season with them didnt even begin yet.

we are going in the right direction

“were they supposed to just cut cary and fletch with no replacements?”
NO. most knowledgeable football fans knew the moment they signed BOTH of these guys that they were CHEAP, inexpensive stopgaps that were only going to be short term solutions. Fletcher was coming off of an injury and Williams was nothing special in Baltimore. my comment was based on poor coaching decisions by allowing them to stay on the field even though they were not producing this year and were making mistakes and their play was ineffective. that shit costed us several games this year. They had several options, Boykin, Carroll and Watkins. how much worse could they have been from what we already have? As I said before, poor coaching decisions and stubbornness not to mention the lack of quality depth is what killed us.

I’m always up for a good debate but you need to chill with the insults and attacks just because you disagree with someone. that shit is weak and it only exposes you.

and just an fyi, if you were including me in your rant about “some peeps”, keep reading, if not, stop reading here………

I talk and think. obviously you don’t because you didn’t fully comprehend my response. I never said that we were not going in the right direction nor did I say that anyone was retarded. you are not the only person with an opinion not to mention who knows the game. to thinking that journeyman 3rd and 4th string CB’s were good enough to start and an arrogance that they are the smartest guys in the room are the reasons. AS I SAID THE CBS WERE BRIDGES, WHAT OTHER OPTIONS WERE THERE???????? ITS A PROCESS, THERE IS NO SHUT DOWN CB TREE THEY CAN JUST PICK A PRO BOWL CB OFF OF. To say were heading in the right direction is an understatement. Chip and Billy Davis did what they could with this defense week n and week out. These boys flat out performed with what personell they had and how much they played and had to be out on the field. Our defense is a few pieces away in the secondary and a OLB/Passrusher away from being something special. I love the nickname Fletcher Cox put on our front 7 “The Nobodies” cause nobody knows who they are. People better start to wise the fuck up, I think this is one of the most promising dlines in Philly history. 2 100 Yard rushers in the past seasons? and help Demarco to under 100 not once but twice? Kendricks and Barwin along with an Upcoming Graham is going to really help our dline out with the talent we have there. People were going to adapt eventually and play us differently, and yet we have a Head Coach who never played in the league, or coach for that matter come in and still be a top offense without his star QB. The main problem this season wasnt Marcus Smith playing, Chips time of possession, defense, special teams, talent evaluation or anything along those line. It was the turnovers that ruined our season. Period. Chip isnt out there muffing up the opening kickoff against dallas. Fumbling the ball away and making boneheaded throws, We have 40 GD turnovers. if we take 10 of those away i guarantee you were a 12 win team and heading to the playoffs. Were one of few teams who could possibly have 10 wins with giveaways. Jacksonville is like second in turnovers and look at them. Thats why our asses are hitting the sulfas early and planning vacations.

CT …Billy Davis should be fired…immediately for his poor performance. After getting burned to a toast by Jordy Nelson, Billy Davis proceeded to leave Fletcher one on one with Dez Bryant and Desean Jackson…repeatedly only taking him off of them after he was burnt alive for numerous touchdowns and big plays.

Poor coaching and bad management decisions is what doomed this team from the start.

Kelly should man up…and admit to himself that the worst decision he made was getting rid of DJax and keeping Riley Cooper.

He cut talent and kept a bum…that more than anything will create bad ‘culture’ on a team because now….the players wonder if you know what you are doing.

The Eagles players have serious doubts about Chip Kelly and his ‘smoothies’ , his monitoring their sleep, and all that all new tech stuff.

Losing and getting your ass kicked with terrible coaching decisions are a recipe for players checking out on the coach.

Chip Kelly better stabilize the QB position…get some veteran help, and do a much better job at drafting…because the players noticed that your first round pick last year cant play special teams because he doesn’t like physical contact.

Not good for your credibility Chip! Your looking bad…real bad right about now! You better right the ship…or else your going to sink fast Chip…real fast!

Probably going to get some shit for this, but why the hell did Michael Vick go to NY? He said to be a starter. But he went to a worse situation then where he woulda been at in Philly. He should just reconstructed his contract to stay in Philly with a coach who would kno how to utilize him better than anyone. With an explosive offense with talent all around. I would have rather had Mike Vick under center these past 7 weeks than Sanchez, I truely believe we would had been a better team with him under center. People might argue Vick would had been a cancer for this team cause he would had wanted to start. But has he been that in NY with his role? Dude has changed tremendously has still has alot left in the tank. Just not as a starter. WOuld have been the perfect backup in Philly.

Even I would have accepted that. Better than watching 35 six yard passes each game, supplemented by the one 15 yard floater up the middle that was either picked or resulted in a WR getting blown up.

Patented 4th Q interception in a big game no fun either.

F-ing Sanchez.

He can’t stay healthy, he has lost his heart, is 6-13 in the last 19 games, gets sacked at historic rates … Vick is a career slightly above 500 qb and at this point he is shot, he brings zero to the table, please stop with vick

.Listen to the players, they know better than some old head like you

Mike vick is no nick foles. But he would have salvaged the season

Trust me Ive moved on. Its just the offseason so im rambling about the N IF L. He’s a back up at best I kno. But would have been the ultimate one here in Philly. He shoulda stayed her is all im saying.

I hope we do re sign Demeco though. Chip put it right. Hes our Mufasa. Dude is the heart and soul of that defense and still has alot of football left in him after he returns.

Before the negative nitwits post… Peter gammons wrote an article about how trading a franchise pitcher rarely if ever returns a franchise changing player… It just doesn’t happen… Keep cole instead of trading for a wing and a prayer… Maybe we contend soon and he is the Wiley vet

It’s too late now, as most Teams moved their better
Prospects on this record breaking off-season full of activity & trades while
Amaro sits on the sidelines for a hope & prayer
May was well hang onto Hamels to June
And see what happens around MLB and whatever
Prospects come available…
The Phils Contending is at least 3 Years-4 Years away

And any of this Peter Gammons Story means what for the Phils??
They are not going anywhere and GM Amaro
had become such a laughing stock around Baseball Circles
That most other GM’s don’t even talk or acknowledge or want to discuss any Player Trades..
Phils are Toast with a basement Team for the near Future
I remember 3- Years ago discussing with you whèn you
Said the Phils would be like Yankees & Red Sox and reload
Every year to make a run that the Phils were now prime time
And “too big to fail”.. I told you were wrong then and still are today since the Phils don’t have competent baseball people in their Front Office..

So paul criticize amaro for not getting a franchise player for cole… Even though no trade has been made… Do you give equal credit for getting HOF Halladay for zero contributing players? Same with borderline HOF pitcher Lee who was gotten for nothing? Use the same criteria for praise and criticism .. Of course as a fraudulent , attention seeker you don’t have the character to do so

I know this is not going to happen, but with the turmoil in Washington, I would be open to trading for RG3. He has been bad, but he could be a reclamation project and could flourish in Chip’s offense. Otherwise, there is no QB available in the NFL that is an upgrade from Foles, unless you have a magic potion to take 10 years off of Michael Vick. Nobody gets rid of a franchise QB. Nobody is going to give up one of the top two picks without a king’s ransom. Recent king’s ransoms have hurt Washington and Atlanta. So, you keep Foles and try to reclaim a QB that once had promise – Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, EJ Manuel, etc. and hope Chip can do wonders with them. Your backup needs to have better upside than the human turnover machine, Sanchez.
