Chip Needs Howie Whether He Likes It Or Not

chip-kelly-howie-rosemanAfter two seasons as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jeff Lurie handed Chip Kelly final say with all roster decisions.  Quite unorthodox with how Chip was given this power, but he has it, and what he will do with it remains to be seen.

What will the Chip and Howie order of operations look like?  Chip selects his players, hands the list of player names to the person in charge of delivering the list, and then it’s up to Howie to crunch all the numbers?  It seems a bit of a stretch, but how much different could it actually be?

A devotion to former Oregon Ducks, a sweet spot for “hustle” players and a loyalty to aging veterans on the down slope of their career all fit the bill as “Kelly” guys.   The problem with that, in the NFL you can’t keep them all, and being able to make those judgment calls is what helps to build your legacy if you are good enough to establish one.

Unlike college, NFL players get paid.  Some of the moves to keep, draft or let players go have felt more “collegiate” than “pro” level.  Chip is smart, he is crafty but I’m not ready to credit him with having good judgment just yet.

I’m not sure what speaking terms Chip and Howie are on; or how their relationship is going to work.  The Eagles are going to need several signings in addition to being faced with several financial questions with their own players under contract for the 2015 season.

Have you looked at some of the cap hits this season for returning players?  The management of funds will play a significant role and Chip will be unable to do “everything.”   Howie Roseman “will” play a big role this offseason as he is the “money” guy.

The Eagles need to add “proven” talent in free agency, and talent cost money.  Who stays, who goes and who is added is for Chip to decide.  Restructuring and structuring contracts, all of the “language” within those deals for “Chip’s” guys, it will be on Howie to finalize the paperwork.

The countdown to free agency is underway, and I guess the same can be said until the first rumor that a riff between Chip and Howie is shaking up the Novacare Complex.

Nice Article Jeff and I agree with you…
We will know a lot about this Chip Kelly’s New Era of Running the Player Personnel/Roster Management area for the Franchise within the next few weeks…
IF Kelly does not ask “His Type” of Veteran Players (Cole,Herremans,Williams,James Casey) for substantial Cuts on their Current Contracts, then he will be doomed as a True Manager of the Eagles Roster.. If he goes and follows the path of least resistance and lets these 4 Veterans who are all Overpaid for their Production to all Return at their Current Deals stating that this is what their Contracts call for by previous management, then he is not the True Leader that he espouses to be.. HE needs to step up now and make the difficult decisions to move this Franchise Forward and to compete for Championships, remember that this Franchise is not only 1-2 Players away from competing from the Elite Teams, but are instead 8-10 Players away and need to add 4-5 Key Players this Off-Season as well as nail it in the upcoming Draft to add to the young Core of Players for Future Years to
Being $20 Million under the Cap with Maclin’s Situation does not leave for much $$$ to go out and sign Veterans for the Secondary/LB Positions that need Upgrading unless they cut the chord with popular Veterans like T Cole, T Herremans, D Ryans, and overpaid ones like Cary Williams and James Casey etc, etc…
These next 30-45 Days will tell me as a Fan, if Chip Kelly is truly committed to the long-term success for the Eagles Franchise or if he’s in over his head with handling the Player Personnel/Roster Management Areas which could lead to him being a short-termer here as HC..

Adding Trent Cole & Todd Herremans to the Cut/Released List adds a Total $28.5 Million in Total Salary Cap Savings (even after their Dead $$$ Hits)

Let Tent Cole Test the Market and then Offer him a 2 Year $10-$12 Million
Deal Total with Incentives..
Cole’s Current Contract calls for 3 Years Remaining of $11 Million in 2015, $14 Million in 2016 & $12 Million in 2017 due which obviously is not going to happen for a Player who most likely is simply a Rotational Pass-Rusher at this Stage of his Career — Good for 25-30 Snaps a Game and maybe 8 Sacks a Season …

Yes, I mentioned this a few weeks back- the Roseman hate needs to end because Howie is very very good at the cap. Chip called him a “great capologist” and I pray that he has worked it out with HR to get them on the same page. Here’s how it should look….

Chip, agent so and so is on line one to see if you are interested in this CB…..

Hey so and so… I like it… your guy looks good and I want him on my team…. please hold for Howie who will bang this deal out with you to get er done.

I believe Howie Fudges the Numbers just to mess Chip Up and to leave him in bad shape… Howie then leaves the Eagles after the 2015 Season to become GM of the Miami Dolphins

Howie has a good paying job and has a chance to show that he can still get things done and go out on top. I do agree that he will be leaving soon BUT…. how he responds to this…. will matter.

Guys, this isn’t ten years ago when nobody but us had a handle on the cap, a ton of teams are doing very well with the cap this day n age and also with contracts, Howie is not as important as everyone thinks, the majority of us loved when Banner was fired but their was also people thinking it was gonna hurt us cause he handled the cap so well, our cap situation didn’t skip a beat after he left, same thing with Howie, theirs someone that’s under him who could take over and we would be fine, get rid of him!

Paulman ..I do agree that the cap and it’s management will be interesting to watch unfold..this is no longer chip wearing the coaches whistle alone. He now wears many hats ,and the same guys he’s coaching he’s also negotiating with ,and taking bread out of there mouths…how deftly he as a coach ,handles this will unfold soon..will he remain true to his past ,and be loyal to a fault? Or will he cut the past regime roster and put younger more able players into place..he just surrounded himself with young generation x types in upper management …his devotion to sports science and young blood upstairs ,will be innovative ,and I believe will be a blue print that will be based upon new metrics and calculus..if he swings and misses on either renewing contracts, rewarding guys who are deserved ,and measuring value by true performance ,asking guys to take less ,will be a challenge …getting the right free agents on the defensive side of the ball..and being nimble in the draft …filling early needs with guys who can contribute now…then he will have a future …if he whiffs on any of the above ,he’s doomed for mediocrity and the bulls eye is on the guy with all the hats …I need believe he gets a few bruises ,but he has won 10 games back to back with makeshift lines, revolving qbs…and a defensive coordinator who is offensive..that’s chattel …now let’s see how it unfolds…

Chip Kelly now needs to execute his
“Rebuilding Plan” that he failed to do last off-season with the success of the 2013 Success which gave false hopes to Ownership,Media & Fans
I believe he may go OL & LB & WR early in this Draft and look
To add Free-Agents to upgrade the Secondary

**Eagle News***
Word out on the Streets is that Nick Foles and His Agent are requesting the Eagles and Chip Kelly to work out a Trade for Nick Foles to the Houston Texans… Texans HC Bill O Brien is very Interested in QB Foles and is willing to Talk
Per Sources, the Texans have Offered the Eagles their 1st Round Pick (#16 Overall) and their 3rd Round Pick in 2016 Draft.. The Eagles are on the Clock

This would give the Eagles 2 1st Round Picks (# 16 & #20) and word is that Kelly will Re-Sign Sanchez and use these Drat Picks either to package to move up for Mariota or Select Brett Hundley if unable to get Mariota

Foles goes on to Win 2-3 AFC & Super Bowl Championships with the Texans as a footnote…

This is a Paulman Rumor based on no Facts..
I do believe that Foles and his Agent are getting a little tired of being the punching bag for and a “2nd best option” for Coach Kelly moving forward and want out and want to PLay for a Franchise and HC who is 100% Supportive of Foles
This is my Story and I am sticking with it and by the way, the Texans
Offense would be a Perfect Fit for Foles style of Play and for their Franchise.. I hope it happens for Foles sake, as he’s been getting jerked around here in Philly with Chip Kelly..

He’s led the Eagles to a 14-4 Record, a NFC East Title in 2013 and still has not gotten a commitment or endorsement as the long-term Answer or Starter for the Eagles and is getting taking advantage of by playing on his Chump-Change Rookie Salary… That’s How…
His Agent and Family want Nick out of the Eagles Organization, now Nick himself won’t say anything public for that’s his personality but his Agent and Father feel that Chip is Taking advantage of the Situation and not ponying up with what Howie Roseman promised them last Off-Season,,,

Luck was a #1 Pick so he’s making a Couple of Million a Season to begin with and not 700K like Foles is
Wilson plays on a SB Championship Team and making good $$$ on his Endorsements and Commericals that he’s been able to cash in on… Nick Foles Checks and Free Lunch Meats from Acme Markets is not cutting it…

I have never endorsed any Player on the Eagle to get Franchised since the Eagles Openly don’t like to do so.. Maybe it will be different under Chip Kelly, but I doubt it, most of the successful Clubs simply stay away from “Franchising Players” for it rarely works for either side..
If the Eagles and WR Maclin cannot come to Terms on a long-term Deal after all this Time, then it’s simply better to let both parties go their own ways…
Maclin is going to wait to see how high the ‘bar is set” by D Thomas and D Bryant and then he and Cobb will know where they stand Salary and Guaranteed $$$ wise..
Meanwhile the Eagles probably have a Number in mind, but do need to have contingency Plans if Maclin decides to go after the big $$$
which is his right as a Free-Agent Player..
Maclin owes nothing to the Eagles in terms on his Future Plans
It’s the way it is, get the emotions out of the process and decide on what’s Best for you and your Family…

NY Jets in position to pull off draft day trade with Eagles centering around Marcus Mariota

On the surface, a deal between the Jets and Eagles makes plenty of sense if Mariota is available when GM Mike Maccagnan & Co. are on the clock with the No. 6 overall pick on April 30. Upon closer inspection, it’s the ultimate no-brainer unless the Jets brass is in starry-eyed love with the Heisman Trophy winner.

If Marcus Mariota slips to the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft, the Jets could send that pick to the Eagles.

If Marcus Mariota slips to the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft, the Jets could send that pick to the Eagles.

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan is positioned to pull off a smart, blockbuster, draft-day trade thanks to a fast-talkin’, smoothie-lovin’ offensive guru 90 miles down the road who can’t wait to land the quarterback of his dreams.

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly’s yearning for Oregon star Marcus Mariota could pave the way for a mutually beneficial deal that would upgrade the Jets at quarterback and provide premium picks to help rebuild a wayward franchise.

On the surface, a deal between the Jets and Eagles makes plenty of sense if Mariota is available when Maccagnan & Co. are on the clock with the No. 6 overall pick on April 30. Upon closer inspection, it’s the ultimate no-brainer unless the Jets brass is in starry-eyed love with the Heisman Trophy winner.

Florida State’s Jameis Winston is the favorite to be the Buccaneers’ top overall selection. Although the Titans have quarterback concerns, Mariota isn’t the prototypical, pro-style signal-caller for head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s system. GM Ruston Webster’s recent praise of 2014 sixth-rounder Zach Mettenberger makes it likely that Tennessee will pass on Mariota with the No. 2 pick.

The Jaguars, Raiders, and Washington, the next three teams on the board, don’t have glaring needs at quarterback, setting the stage for a Jets-Eagles swap.

What’s fair compensation?

The Rams and Washington provided a loose framework three years ago in a trade centering on a star college quarterback. Washington gave up three first-round picks (2012-2014) and a 2012 second-round pick to move up from the No. 6 to No. 2 to land Robert Griffin III.

Kelly, who now has complete personnel control after an offseason organizational shakeup, isn’t nearly as desperate as then-Washington head coach Mike Shanahan was to find a franchise quarterback. Washington’s three quarterbacks in the two seasons before the trade — Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman and John Beck — were a combined 11-21 for a pair of last-place teams.

Chip Kelly, the former Oregon coach, has his eyes on Mariota.

The Eagles have had 10-win seasons, including a playoff appearance, in Kelly’s first two years. It’s unlikely that he’d sell the farm for the dual-threat quarterback, but he’d almost certainly put together the most attractive deal for Mariota, who would have a minimal learning curve in an offense run by his former college coach.

“He might be the fastest guy on the field, but his mind is even faster,” Kelly said before Oregon’s National Championship game against Ohio State last month. “(He) thinks like Peyton Manning.”

Not coincidentally, Kelly has never doled out such effusive praise for Eagles starter Nick Foles, who would be the ideal bargaining chip in a potential trade. Kelly would prefer to use Foles to supplement (and thus lighten) the draft-pick compensation package needed to move up for Mariota, who might not throw at the scouting combine this week due to a sprained right shoulder suffered in the National Championship game.

Although the trade value chart devised by Jimmy Johnson in the 1990s provides a numerical representation of the value for draft picks, there are no hard-and-fast rules for what constitutes a reasonable swap. Fairness is in the eye of the beholder.

A win-win for the Jets and Kelly: The Eagles give up 2015 and 2016 first- and second-rounders for the No. 6 pick.

Although the Eagles need to make defensive upgrades (see: secondary), Kelly would land his ideal quarterback to run Philly’s up-tempo offense.

“If he’s in Chip’s system, he’ll be a problem for teams from Day One,” one personnel director said. “Mariota may be the missing piece for them. If he plays in any other system, he’s at least one year away.”

Makes for a cute little story… I think they left out the Kelly quotes because nowhere in there does it say at kely has spoken about such a trade… It never said we’d like him to run our eagles offense… I guess it’s sloppy journalism to leave out those specific quotes but to quote him on a general question about a FORMER player

It says nothing. You can’t take the position that the draft is a crapshoot and then say it says something about a person when he does not get drafted where they were previously projected. it just happened to Teddy Bridgewater, high character guy, has won in college, performed bad at combine, but played well in the NFL games he started.
He will not last until 20, but, I maintain if he gets within striking distance( 12-15), Chip makes the move because he thinks the draft is a crapshoot and will not worry about the picks needed to move up to get a guy I believe he covets.
I think the article makes sense for both teams personally. of course, it’s all about what chip really wants and if the jets would see this as a good trade.

Not when it comes to Chip and Mariota, it’s the old placing a tea bag in hot water analogy, he already knows who and what Mariota is. That is why he compared him to Peyton Manning, praising him and speaking glowingly about him saying he is mentally quick, processes information quickly blah blah blah. Mariota is not a crapshoot to Kelly, other picks he would use to draft players would be the crapshoot for him.
Notice, he never said that about Manziel who he recruited, matter of fact, he verbally brushed Manziel to the side.

As far as the draft, what GM is concerned with what Chip says as it relates to their QB situation. If they put that much stock in what he says about a player they should be fired. After all, Chip has not won anything championship wise.

Unfortunately, you are showing your naivety and stubbornness as it is well known how much Chip values and likes Mariota as a player and person. Your desire to have Nick remain as the QB not only clouds your ability to see what is right in front of you, it also makes you Chip’s alter ego, telling me what Chip would have said if…
Sometimes there is no room for interpretation, this is one of them. Get over it and yourself. You may like to be right, but you are not always right…deal with it.
If I would have stated Chip thinks Mariota is like Peyton Manning, but Chip never said it, you would be on here…Oh Chip never said that…show me where that was written…LOL. Chip said it, and because it does not fit into your neat little box of how things should be…I am naïve. How self centered you are Chip Kelly’s alter ego, How self centered you are!

HAC , Can you name me one other Team or Offensive System/Coach’s that needs a Young QB that is a good Fit for Mariota outside the Eagles…
Are the Rams a Fit, the Bears, the Texans, Cardinals, Bills or Bengals ?
You start going down the line and most of these Teams that have QB Needs just don’t run a Spread-Read-Option Based System and actually run a more Traditional Pocket QB type of System where Mariota has to be prove that he can play in which I am sure he can adjust too given time (1 to 2 Years) but is this the type of QB you move up and mortgage the Future for id he is not an ideal fit for your Team and Scheme.. Hell No, which is why I believe he falls down the Draft Board.. I would not even be surprised to see a Brett Hundley Drafted before Marcus Mariota for at least Hundley played in more NFL System under UCLA Bruins Coach Jim Mora Jr and knows Pro Terminology, Formations, etc, etc…

What I am saying is that many NFL GM’s/Coach’s are concerned that Mariota will struggle to make it as a “Traditional Drop Back/Pocket QB” to warrant trading up and trading multiple picks for a QB who does not naturally fit most Teams Schemes
Blaine Gabbert, RG3, Geno Smith, EJ Manuel, Jake Locker, Johnny Football have all been slow and inconsistent to move from their College “Spread Offense’s” to a more Traditional NFL Style Offenses
Again, no one is saying Mariota cannot succeed at the NFL Level,
But I am saying that it’s no slam-dunk that Mariota can trasmlate to the more used NFL System and play under Center within 2 years time and his Arm Strength has been questioned about making all the NFL Throws from Playing in the Pocket..
He’s a nice Kid, Great Story, from Hawaii, but It’s a different level at the NFL then the stacked program that he played with in at Oregon where simply the pace itself, would wear out half of their opposing Defenses…

meanwhile kelly- the king of the RO will make foles into a flacco/brady hybridish…. and try to win that way–

Anyone thinks the Eagles can move up from 20 to 6 by swapping first rounders this year, adding a 2016 1st and 2 seconds is loopy.

That being said….I do think there’s a chance one of the 2 QBs slides. If one of them gets past Tenny, then he might sit for a while.

I wish Chip Kelly would trade himself to the NY Jets for their HC Todd Bowles
straight up…

because 20 wins after taking over a 4-12 team is horrible.

The Eagles Talent was not of a 4-12 Team is just like when AR took over the 2-14 KC Chiefs and just liek when Bill OBRien took over a 4-12 Texans Teams last Year…. These was under-achieveing Teams that has Talent on both sides of the Ball that went thru meltdowns during their Previous Coach’s Final Season with all these 3 Teams
The Eagles are consistently fielded 8-9-10 Win Team over the last 5-6-7 Years minus a couple of hiccups with Injuries to key Players, Coaching Changes, etc,etc
The Eagles for the last 12 Years have been slightly above Average
I expect them to remain so until 2016 where these last couple of questionable Drafts & Off-Seasons rear their heads and the Talent Level diminishes from Top to Bottom
If The Eagles don’t have a better Draft in 2015 and 2016 Drafts and they soon will be a legitimate 4-12 Team with dim prospects..
The Final Season of AR Tenure is simply a throw-away Season and means very little in terms of what Talent and Team Chip Kelly inherited

The year before they were 5-11…. So the numbers are the numbers… Todd Bowles was part of that shitty team… So your total BS as usual

Maybe the Jets can throw in DT Mohammed Wilkerson, who I wanted the
Eagles To Draft in 2011 instead of Danny Watkins at # 23 while the Jets grabbed Wilkerson at #30th.. I had Wilkerson mocked the most during my 125 Mock Drafts during the 2011 Run up to the NFL Draft per my Notes

Chip has access to Salary Cap Analyst/Staff Counsel, Jeff Weidemeyer and several other financial Analyst. In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that these people report directly to Chip now.

I don’t think Chip needs Howie’s help to get done what he wants done.

I like the Following Free-Agents

2 CB’s Chris Culliver & Buster Skrine (Release Bum-Ass Cary Williams)
Safety Da’Norris Searcy or Steve Gilchrist
OLB Pernell McPhee or Jerry Hughes
WR Kenny Britt & Cecil Shorts and let Maclin Walk (Cost would be about the same) Britt is the Down the Field Big Play WR while Shorts is the Possesion/Intermdeiate Receiver and put these 2 Along with Matthews and Huff and the Eagles are back to having a good WR Corps again

Then Draft OL,LB,WR and more Secondary in the Draft
