Eagles Should Use Franchise Tag On Jeremy Maclin

maclinIt would be wise for the Eagles to apply the franchise tag on Jeremy Maclin for the 2015 season. Guarantee he is part of the offense, but allow “options” moving forward.

Maclin played last season with a “prove it” mentality, and the franchise tag would essentially put him in the same predicament. Show that he can remain healthy for an entire season; prove he should be considered one of the best in the league. Oh yeah, it would also put a few extra million in his piggy bank.

Would the tag on Maclin send a negative message? The NFL is a business and there is a reason the franchise tag was introduced. This is a “strategic” element of the financial game that is football.

There is a good chance that both the top two available free agent wide receivers in Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas are tagged by their respective teams. Cobb is ranked higher than Maclin and has gone on record with requesting an average of nine million a season. Tagging Maclin would probably cost the Eagles an addition three to four million dollars this season, but the options it would open up has several advantages.

If we apply the franchise tag, we can think about how the 2016 season would look like. Another season to see Matthews, Huff, and any free agent or rookie we draft. It would also be much cheaper to rid ourselves of Riley Cooper.

Demaryius Thomas will likely join the likes of Julio Jones, Alshon Jeffrey and A.J Green in the 2016 class of wide receivers. Sure the franchise tag could be applied and extensions agreed upon. Guys like Marshall, Fitzgerald and even Calvin Johnson could also join the list with their cap hits. Dez and the Cowboys will eventually come to a long term agreement, Jerry Jones loves the kid, but that leaves several other big names on the market. By waiting to extend Maclin long term, the Eagles allow themselves the opportunity to see if they could upgrade or have “more” power with negotiating Maclin next season.

If the tag is applied to Thomas and Dez this season, and Cobb has set a per season number for his contract, it leaves Maclin as the best available wide receiver “currently” on the market. He has the power and the control to request a contractual amount he feels he is worth, and not necessarily one that we think he is worth. A team who has a surplus of cap space and a need for a wide receiver like the Browns could overpay for his services.

The Eagles can’t afford getting into a bidding war and overpaying for a very good wide receiver but not one I would classify as elite.

Watching Maclin walk is not and should not be an option. They need to guarantee he is an Eagle for one more season at minimum. Apply the tag, and begin focusing on other areas of need.

I want Maclin back but I wouldn’t be mad if tagged him and traded him to chiefs cause they are,in win now mods they veteran team this will be reids 3rd yr he needs to win now and that’s all there missing on offense is a wr Reid knows him drafted him needs him it makes perfect since even if they give Tamba Hali and 2nd 5th Rd picks.

There is no Trading a Player once “Franchised”,
You either Franchise to keep that Player or your Don’t and let them Test the Market
No Team is going to Trade for a Free-Agent who was Franchised.. That makes no Sense for the Chiefs to do… Why wouldn’t the Chiefs just go out and Sign a WR like Randall Cobb instead of being forced to pay the “Franchise Amount” plus trade Draft Picks and Players to the Eagles..C’Mon Gloomy this makes No Sense….

As it relates to trading a franchised tagged player:

When a player signs a Franchise Tender as Spencer has, it becomes fully guaranteed for skill, cap, and injury. He is also required to begin attending mandatory team activities and/or training camp. This is one reason that Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd will wait until after the offseason to sign his tender.

Only a failure by the player to maintain “excellent physical condition” can enable a team to terminate an accepted franchise tag.

However, the offer can be withdrawn at any time prior to the player’s acceptance of the tender. In the event that a tender is taken off of the table, the player automatically and immediately becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent.

If a player signs the contract, that player can be traded to another team, but the right to use the franchise tag on a player cannot be traded. The Chiefs flirted with trading tackle Brandon Albert knowing they would select another tackle with the first-overall selection (Eric Fisher). If Albert had not signed his Franchise Tender, the Chiefs would not have eligible to trade him.

Paulman it makes perfect sense who said Cobb is gonna make it to fa or if the Chiefs even want him or if Cobb even wants to play there Maclin is from Missouri, knows Andy and the whole staff just cause your franchised doesn’t mean you can’t be traded.

Plus when you add it up with wr being deep in the draft again the eagles could then address in fa with someone like Kenny britt and then draft one in the 2nd Rd like the kid strong.

I say let WR Jeremy Maclin Walk
Eagles are $20 Million Under Cap now and should knock off another $25 Million by Releasing Trent Cole, D Ryans, T Herremans, C Williams and J Casey which would give them $48.5 Million to add 3-4 Players on Defense and a WR or two and then Draft a WR
Chip Kelly must Rebuild this Team Starting this Off-Season even if it means taking a step back for 2015, which they most likely would if they remain the same, so make the changes now and get BIgger, Younger & Faster and remold this Team for 2016 and Beyond..
Eagles are not 1-2-3 Players away for a 2015 SB Run, in fact, they probably finish 3rd in the NFC East behind the Cowboys & Giants and are still a ways behind the Seahawks,Packers, etc, etc in terms of Total Talent, so they are better off using this Season to build for the Future… I would Release, Cut and Trade every Eagle Player over 30 Years old (besides LT Jason Peters) and start anew…

The older Players that Chip Kelly has inherited have all peaked and are all on the downside of their Careers due to age and injuries, etc.. Players like Jason Peters,E Mathis,T Herremans, T Cole,D Ryans & B Celek….

The Worst thing that happened to Chip Kelly and his Rebuilding Plan was making the Playoffs in his 1st Year in 2013, in a very weak NFC East, giving too many, the false hope that this Average Eagles Roster is going to contend for a legitimate Super Bowl run anytime soon…
It’s time to do what Chip Kelly should have done last Off-Season and blow this Team Up and get Younger,BIgger,Faster to contend for the next 5-6-8 Years….

***NFL NEws*****

KC Chiefs free up approx $4.7 Million off their Salary Cap by Releasing WR’s
Donnie Avery & AJ Jenkins.. I expect them to rework WR Bowe and OLB Hali’s Contracts as well to save some $$$$

The GB Packers release TE B Bostic who fumbled that on-sides Kick vs Seahawks in NFC Championship Game

Teams are starting to Release Players under Contract as they want to free up Capitol & $$$$$ to get ready for Free-Agency

See if Genius Chip Kelly makes the Decisions to get younger, bigger & faster by Releasing some Overpaid Veterans and by adding younger, hungrier Players or if the Roster and Franchise remains the “Status Quo”… Kelly’s Action or Inactions these next few weeks will determine his and the Teams Future Success ..
(I have to believe the Jeff Lurie & Don Smolenski are already gathering notes, references for the next Eagles HC)

Eagles do not Franchise Players, even when it’s in their Best Interest’s to do so, Chip Kelly is going to have to learn fast to have Plan B,C & D for every Scenario for that’s what occurs at the NFL Level…Players are motivated for a 100 different reasons and especially once they are established Players in the NFL, where Winning, Playing closer to Home, Playing with Certain Coach’s or other Players becomes a factor as opposed to a young Player still trying to make a name for himself and simply looking for an opportunity to Play
We’ll see how this works out with Maclin, but Kelly better have some Contingency Plans on how to replace Maclin’s Production if he moves on..

Pman …ever here of team chemistry? You don’t disassemble ,that which yields wins …20 wins in the first two years puts your theory to a stringent test.Even a fool chimp knows better…here’s my opinion..you didn’t see the maclin that could put him easily in the penthouse section of million dollar receivers..he had a noodle arm scared mark sanchez ,we all have heard of discount ,double check..well mark ,is mr double check down..macs stats will be commensurate to what he’s going to get paid..with a noodle arm qb…one who was shuffling as much as anyone would ,under duress..with a makeshift bunch of nobody’s blocking ..was able to show he had a certain chemistry and trust in maclin..chip knows he needs replace desean ,when that happens ,maclin is even that much more potent ,as you need safety help on a burner..replacing Djax and Dawkins are the pivotal steps this coach needs address ..Give me a snot kicking safety ,and get me a guy who can run by people on a simple go route and this offense gets much more attractive..on the other side we are young ,we have athletic linebackers , and decent front 7 ..we understand we need two corners ..if we are serious about going for it ,we $pend on a safety and at least draft a corner ,and sign Revis ..away from New England..Jeffrey Lurie gets hard, thinking of anything he can do to get one over on bob kraft..Revis immediately shrinks the field ,almost as minuscule as bill Davis …I’m still waiting on that shoe from chip to drop…I’ll be patient and drink the Kool aid,but bill Davis out here in the desert left to applause ..just look at the cards defensively ,since he left..It’s a valid point that this might be chips Waterloo…that he quickly endorsed a guy who has the Worst passing stats in nfl history for deep balls..I know (personnel) well he made the spectacular coaching decision to single up fletcher and succinctly blew up a season ..he is as much to blame for why you and I sat home at the playoffs watching the cowgirls..bad coaching like that ,gets rewarded with renewed confidence? Strike one by chip ..two to go..managing the monetary aspects …and that entails a chip to howie linkage…strike 2 possibly …well see..and then the draft ..the ultimate crap shoot in all of sports ..he’s a neophyte ,surrounded by neophytes ..in any business structure ,that’s a tad risky …if he swings and misses he’s out …3 strikes ..if he hits it out of the park..he’s in eagle Lurie…

Interesting Article abort RG3

Mike Shanahan says Redskins owner Daniel Snyder steered RG3 wrong

The divorce is in the past, but the topic is still fascinating.

Mike Shanahan was fired as the head coach of the Washington Redskins at the end of the 2013 NFL season as rumors of a rift between the coaching staff and starting quarterback Robert Griffin III ran rampant.

On Wednesday, Shanahan was interviewed by ESPN 980 hosts Thom Loverro and Kevin Sheehan, and during the hour-long discussion the former coach shed light on a couple of fascinating incidents. One came after Griffin’s exceptional rookie season that saw the latter injure his knee during an NFC wild-card playoff game against Seattle.

Griffin was apparently unsatisfied with the Redskins’ playbook, wanted changes made and requested a meeting with Shanahan — a meeting that seemed to Shanahan was fueled by team owner Daniel Snyder (quotes courtesy of DC Sports Bog):

“It was actually two days after the Super Bowl,” Shanahan said. “He had asked to have a meeting and I really don’t blame that on Robert. I mean, Robert to me was a young player, he had a heck of a year, he had a serious injury at that time, and it’s me that changed the perception of a person, because I know Dan [Snyder] felt very strongly about Robert being a drop-back quarterback and did not want Robert to take shots. I didn’t want him to take shots, either; all I wanted to do was run an offense that gave him a chance to be successful. I wanted him to get better at throwing the ball away, I wanted him to get better at sliding, but doing the things that I thought gave him the best chance to be successful.

“Yeah, he did ask for a meeting. He did talk about, number one, he wanted change. He mentioned the Baltimore game and the Atlanta game, you know, his injuries. He talked about protection shortening his career. What I tried to share with him is I thought he had probably as good a protection as most rookies do have in their first year because of what he was able to do with the running game. If you compare [Griffin’s protection] to Andrew Luck, it’s not even close. He actually [mentioned] what plays were acceptable and unacceptable, and when he started talking about what plays were acceptable and unacceptable, and that he wasn’t a rookie anymore and wanted to voice his opinion, the term ‘unacceptable’ is used by Dan, the owner, quite often. So [I had] a little bit of a smile when I heard some of these complaints.”

“He wanted to be more of a drop-back, Aaron Rodgers-type guy,” Shanahan said. “He did a few more things, and basically what I did is I went and talked to Dan, and I said, ‘Hey, Dan, for a quarterback to come to me, a veteran coach, and share these things, number one, he can’t be the sharpest guy to do something like that, or he’s got to feel very good about the owner backing him up. And since you have been telling me from Day One that he’s a drop-back quarterback and we should do more drop-back, and you guys have spent the last couple months together, I would think, or at least the last month, that this is an extension of you.’ He said it wasn’t. I just told him that the only chance that this kid, Robert, has to get to the level that we need him to get to is for him to at least trust us that we’re going to run the offense that gives him the best chance to be successful. And if not, it’s impossible, because he’s not ready for it. I can see it, that he’s not ready for that type of offense. Not that he’s not good enough, he just has never done it before.”

Shanahan also denied an ESPN report from 2013 that said he was ready to call it quits before the team’s wild-card loss to the Seahawks because he was angry over Snyder’s relationship with Griffin. However, was there a rift between him and team management? He doesn’t deny this.

“When I went over and talked to Dan over at his house after I talked to Robert [after Griffin’s rookie year], I just told Dan, ‘Hey, Dan, I just had a conversation with Robert and I think this conversation is coming from you more so than it is Robert,’ ” Shanahan said. “I said, ‘If that’s the case, there’s no way — unless your owner, your GM, your head coach and your quarterback are all on the same page — you win in the National Football League.’ “

Nick foles + healthy offensive line (upgrades always ) + replace b Dawkins+ replace desean + sign Revis !draft the kid from Washington (and don’t preach culture) and that = a very competitive team !that best matchup on it’s back end against the beasts of the easts …it’s not rocket science ??you better get safety and corners or you’re toast in the NFC east ..and what If they even add more weapons the giants get Cruz back !dezz is dezz ??and desean is desean ??you need account for these and others..is it too much to pay Revis to shrink the filed? It’s incalculable

The kid from Washington is Shaq Thompson, and he is a very good prospect with speed, and pop. He is a LB, that can also play Safety, and would finally replace Brian Dawkins after all these years.

He has to be one of their picks. He is 6-2 225lbs, and runs a 4.52

Oh, okay Z…..

If that’s the case the Eagles could still get him as well in the 2nd or 3rd depending on how he does at the combine with his interviews, which would also be a steal if they could come away with he, and Quinton Rollins, as their future CB starters..

But Shaq Thompson is our Brian Dawkins with more speed, and cover ability in waiting…I hope Chip can see it…
