Eagles Release James Casey

JamesCasey2The Eagles have parted ways with veteran tight end James Casey, the club announced on Thursday afternoon.

Casey, a talented offensive weapon, was underutilized during his two years with the Eagles. He struggled to find playing time with both Brent Celek and Zach Ertz ahead of him on the depth chart, and primarily made his mark as one of the team’s contributors on special teams a year ago. However, when his number was called on offense the former Texan was able to contribute whenever the Eagles needed him.

The problem with Casey is that he made close to $4 million a year. The Eagles could afford to pay him that last year, but they needed the extra cap room this year. Before the release of Casey, the team had just under $19 million available.

With Celek and Ertz still on the roster, along with another promising prospect in undrafted rookie Trey Burton, keeping a fourth (and rather expensive) tight end was a luxury the team just couldn’t afford any longer.

Expect a lot more cuts to follow, so far so good for Chip n Marynoweitz but this was an easy call, on another note, Sal Pal just reported that Mariota is telling coaches at the combine that he thinks he’s gonna have problems playing under center and with 5 n 7 step drops, I wonder if this is his way of telling everyone he doesn’t want to play for anyone but Chip.

yeah, I heard that report….it’s as if Mariota and Chip talked in advance about scenarios that could bring thing together in the NFL.

They both really want this.

Who is James Casey?

Wait….what’s the new media created theory that I’m now supposed to believe?

That Marcus Mariotta is now the first college player in the history of the NFL draft to “undersell” himself so that he can drop in the draft from 2 to 20….costing him about 14 million dollars?

Sure.

Why would he have to drop to 20? He drops to ten and he’s ours! The Rams would rather have Foles and 20, besides that, Eli talked his way out of the top pick, and that was when the money was insane, to some guys it’s more important where n who they play for then the money.

Do you really think Mariotta is going around telling teams he can’t play QB so that he can drop down in the draft and get picked by the Eagles?

Really?

You actually believe he’s telling teams he can’t play QB?

That’s absurd.

BTW – Eli was picked #1, traded, and then received the most guaranteed $$ rookie ever.

What do u call it when the QB is sitting in front of these coaches n GMs n is telling them all the things he can’t do or Is not comfortable with? I don’t remember the last time I heard a QB trying to get drafted talk like this, if you have let me know who.

Marcus Mariota says his biggest adjustment will be huddling

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 19, 2015, 2:32 PM EST

Marcus Mariota says his biggest adjustment going from Oregon to the NFL won’t be the speed of the pro game, or the longer season or the more intense practice schedule. The biggest difference will be learning to command a huddle.

Speaking to reporters at the Scouting Combine, Mariota said that after running a no-huddle offense in college, he needs to learn how to call plays in a huddle.

“It’s gonna be huddling — I haven’t huddled in a while,” Mariota said. “It seems like a little detail, but that is kind of a big thing.”

Mariota also acknowledged that Oregon’s offense didn’t prepare him to be the classic dropback passer that NFL teams look for, but he believes he has already made progress in learning that during his pre-Combine work with coaches including Kevin O’Connell, who recently became the quarterbacks coach of the Browns.

“There are other things as well, as far as the three, five, seven-step drops under center, that’s all stuff I’ve been able to work on in the last month and will continue to work on,” Mariota said.

Mariota has confirmed that he will throw at the Combine, so he can show off how well he works on those three, five and seven-step drops. As for commanding a huddle, he won’t be able to show off what he can do there until after he’s drafted.

Job interview ‘you’ve told us your strengths can you share some things that you need to improve’ answer, ‘we’ll I understand your company likes to huddle, I didn’t do that in college but I’m a quick study’
You guys do know that pee wee QBs can huddle?

Mariota doesn’t have to tell the scouts and coaches what he has not done in college. These people know very well what his strengths and weaknesses are…

Mariota is letting them know that he is working on the things that many view as his shortcomings. It’s smart of Mariota to acknowledge that he needs work in certain areas of his game. It would be dumb for him to act any differently.

The guy is going to be drafted high in the first round. He has the size, speed, and intelligence to be a starting QB in the NFL… All that’s left now is to see if he can learn to read NFL defense and make good decisions in real time… Many guys with size, speed, and intelligence fail… a few make it.

I liked Casey but I think his entire 4 mil salary counted against the cap – any of you cap gurus agree with that? Now the birds have like 23 mil in cap space?

Is it true that Trent Cole counts for 11 Mil in cap space this year and 12 next?
And Cary Williams is 8? Ryans 6.8 –

Thoughts on getting rid of Cole and Cary Williams and using the extra 19 mil in cap space to get a couple CBs, S and OLB – I hope we draft defense this year

See ya, wouldn’t want to to be ya! Remember when the “Genius” said he’d be an all around weapon, playing in the backfield, lining up on the line, & at Wideout? BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Let’s pray, that Chip learns his lessons, from his f^#@ups, & does the right things. Next……
Cut Ryans, Williams, Cole.
Restructure Herremans, Shady.
Say Ciao to all our FA’s, minus Polk & Thornton.
Sign OLB Jason Worilds, ILB David Harris, WR Demaryius Thomas, CB’s 2 of Buster Skrine/ Kareem Jackson/ Davon House/ Chris Culliver/, Safety 1 of either Raheem Moore/ Da’Norris Searcy/ Ron Parker, QB Locker.

Yes Elway did say that and he also said that TE J Thomas most likely will be moving on as they cannot afford to sign both of them as they still need to address their OL (Orlando Franklin is a Free-Agent for them and they still have issues at Center)

Not alot. Positions need to be filled, don’t they? Fletcher, Allen, Graham, Matthews all gone & aren’t getting resigned. Ryans is done with 2 Achilles
tears, will be released & has to be released. Cole either gets released, or restructured. Williams blows, & could either be released, or restructured. Smith is a bust, & can’t be counted on. We need a BU QB. We need upgrades, & have many empty roster spots, so how DO YOU PROPOSE we fill them????? You can’t fill them all in the draft. We will have close to $50M+ if we Ryans, Williams & Cole. If we restructure Shady & Herremans, that’s more $$$ to play with! So what’s your idea, of upgrading/ replacing, a horrid defense with many holes, a FA WR, who isn’t worth being tagged, & age all along the lines? Waiting for your genius response. With the exception of D. Thomas, none of the FA’s I proposed signing, are going to break the bank. We will have plenty of $$$$ to sign say, OLB Worilds, ILB Harris, CB’s Skrine & Jackson, Safety Moore, WR Cobb & QB Locker. Draft a young CB, Safety, O-lineman, ILB, WR & depth.

Well I think they bring demeco back at a lower salary and draft Kendricks brother in the 1st Rd I’m not as big on safety I think they need better cb’s rather than upgrade at safety hell nate allen had better stats than Jenkins.only fa I would get is
Cb- Culliver, Devon house
Olb- worlids or the guy from ravens
But that’s it unless they want to bring in Jake locker.

Eagles would get killed up the Middle with the Kendricks Brothers
You cannot have 230-240lbs ILB’s at Both Inside LB’s Positions..
Pair this undersized backers with a smaller NT in Logan and they would get killed up the middle….
Eagles need to get Bigger, Stronger up the Middle at NT,ILB & Safety if they want to Compete with the Big Boys (Seahawks,Packers,Cowboys,49ers)

The eagles didn’t get killed before or after demeco got hurt so what are you talking about paulman demeco is big abd can’t run he’s only good at stopping the run can’t cover at all I ratger go with a young athletic player in KendricksKendricks over some big guy who’s just a two down lb.

Eagles weren’t hurt against the Run as much last Season for their Pass Defense has been so Poor the last couple of Seasons that Teams could Pass,Pass,Pass and for Big Yardage so the need to Run against the Eagles wasn’t really there….. The Eagles Must get Bigger up the Middle and if you don’t realize this, then there is nothing more I can say…
Kendricks Brother goes about 235lbs?? He is going to struggle at the NFL Level playing the Inside..

I agree with you pman we cant have 2 smaller inside backers and expect them to shed blockers and stop the run you need a big guy in there with mychal but eric is a good player but not for us rather have mckinney and draft one of those monster nose tackles in 3rd rd and slide logan to de and boom your front seven is set but we gotta get worilds

That’s a Good Plan right there Z44 and I agree with getting a Bigger NT and sliding Logan down at Thornton’s Spot.. There are some Good ILB
in this Draft… McKinney (6-4 -249lbs) Anthony -Clemson (6-2 245lbs), Taiwan Jones -Mich State (6-3 258lbs)

Eric Kendricks is listed at 6-0 230lbs — No Way for Eagles..
