Could Boykin Start In 2015?

boykin2Why not pencil in Brandon Boykin as a starting cornerback for the 2015 season? The answer is because he is the “nickel” only guy, he can’t “size up” with the bigger receivers in the league due to his height.

Chip Kelly has said on multiple occasions that he won’t even tinker with the idea of moving Boykin to the outside; he “prefers” to have “bigger” guys out there. How can it be justified that a guy can’t start in this league if he has never been given the opportunity to prove himself? The rationale by our head coach is solely based on his height?

Smaller cornerbacks can start in the NFL, and perform well. Brandon Flowers began his seven year career with the Chiefs and played last season with the Chargers. He has been a very good starter in the NFL, a Pro Bowler in 2013; the kid can play despite being 5’9” and 187 pounds.

Boykin had six interceptions in 2013 and was rewarded with fewer snaps in 2014. Our “starting” cornerbacks were awful last season. Why not give Boykin the opportunity to help Fletcher who was embarrassing himself on a weekly basis.

By not attempting Boykin in a starting role, we don’t know if Boykin could actually start in the NFL. We don’t know if we could sign one less cornerback in free agency because Boykin is one of our starters on the outside. We may have to use a higher pick and possibly overdraft a rookie because the grade on Boykin as a starter is “incomplete.”

We once again have to trust in what Chip says, instead of letting our eyes and football IQ come to our own conclusion.

It’s likely the Eagles draft a cornerback in the first three rounds of the 2015 draft. Will Chip start a kid who has “zero” snaps at the professional level but measures in a few extra inches taller than Boykin just to stick with his “bigger” guy philosophy?

How are we going to feel come 2016 when Boykin is starting for another NFL team; playing with a chip on his shoulder for being labeled too “short” by the Eagles?

The Eagles have been awful at drafting secondary help for over a decade, and they found talent in the 4th round with Boykin. They are wasting the opportunity to see if his talent can translate over to a starting role, and all because of his height.

Can Boykin start is the question, the answer is NO! All you have to do is look at the SB and what that receiver who was working at footlocker was doing to that corner who’s the same size as Boykin, if you did watch then you saw he was shut down the rest of the game once they put 6 4″ Browner on him, in our division with those stud receivers that’s there, he’ll get eaten alive, we need big guys that can play.

That’s no fair comparison Andrew p cause the guy that was coving the guy from footlocker wasn’t good you could’ve put Revis on him and bet he would’ve done a better job and he isn’t 6’4 he just a good player that was the pats fault for having that bum on him but I guess they thought bum on bum we have the better bum but it didn’t work our that way.

How good was the receiver? The guy was working at footlocker a month or two earlier, the point is, you don’t see corners Boykins size shutting down these big receivers today, and speaking of Boykin, did he play as good last year as the year before? Did you see any progression? I didn’t! let’s not make him out to be some all pro and hope this new secondary coach brings out his 2013 season alone with whoever else they bring in.

No Boykin cannot… If he was groomed as an Outside CB when he was First Drafted, then possibly.. But he’s a Slot Cb similar to what Joselio Hanson was a few years ago the biggest thing I don’t understand was why Boykin was not groomed to be the Punt Returner to replace D-Jax a few Years Ago
Boykin at the University of Georgia was an excellent Return Man and very Dangerous when having the Ball in the Open Field and could have even dabbled as a 5th WR running some End-Arounds, Bubble Routes, etc, etc…
He’s always been Under Utilized by both Both Coaching Staffs now and kind of a Wasted Talent in my Opinion..

You don’t know why he wasn’t groomed to replace DJax????!!!!

Easy answer – He CAN’T replace DJax – because what he did in college means nothing in the NFL….

He doesn’t have the athleticism, nor the speed, nor the it factor, to do what DeSean Jackson has accomplished on an NFL Football Field ever….

That’s why..

I’m talking about Punt Returner also….

DeSean Jackson’s production – or lack of – in punt returning says nothing about Boykins ability to replace him when he is an inferior talent.

The Eagles didn’t want him to get injured – not DeSean – Your hate for him is veiling your judgment again…

Point is Boykins is not a PR in the NFL

Boykin is the best CB on this team by a MILE and the fact that he didnt start last year is a crime. Yes his height is a minor negative but he is a playmaker plain and simple. Take the last game vs Dallas where he had a beautiful pass break up against none other than Dez Bryant. If he gets a jump ball break up on Dez why is his height an issue…..he has hops. Just sayin

He is now, by default because Williams, and Fletcher will be moving on.

Before he wasn’t. Cary Williams was the best CB on the team. If Boykins was actually better, then don’t you think he would have beat out two player that are average – well below average???

He’s just isn’t as good as you think. He is a slot Comer exclusively, and that’s it……despite his hops.

He has started in the past, and it was a disaster. He is just a slot corner – not a starter…period

Buster Skrine is an Outside CB and plays bigger than he is, similar to a Grimes type and can make plays on the Outside with his Leaping and Ball Skills and Positioning ability…
Boykin has very little experience playing on the outside and the few times he did, he was lost out there … Boykin is strictly a Slot CB at the NFL Level and probably in his Final Season as an Eagle as a Cheaper, younger Player like Jaylen Watkins will replace him in 2016..

Buster Skrine is an average Corner that is short, and inconsistent. The Browns drafted Justin Gilbert to start because they were sure he was just a slot corner ala Boykins – but he was given the opportunity because Gilbert couldn’t translate his game to the pros, and he did an admiral job..

Delaware’s Nick Boyle at 6-4 268lbs could be a nice Blocking TE

Then what??

Culliver hasn’t proven he’s that much better, and has problems staying healthy, so if he can’t stay on the field was it a good move to pass on him, or do you continue to defend his position because he was your guy??

Maxwell is still young, has the size, and the speed to give the Eagles what they need, and they can still go after Davon House, and draft 2 future starting corners in the draft.

Biggest Bum/Loser of the Combine So Far

#1 Rated TE Maxx Williams University of Minnesota (6-4 250lbs)
He only ran a 4.77 and then a 4.90 in both his 40 Yard Dash Runs
and Lifted 225lbs 17 Times which was near the Bottom of a Weak TE Class

He Probably has gone from a 2nd to the 3rd Round Prospect
with Clive Walford of Miami and Nick O’Leary of Fla State probably jumping ahead of him on most Teams Boards..

Justify that you want chip ,here for the long term …so let’s all back off the pie in the sky Mariotta bullshit ..I want sure things ,I’m not interested in all this hype ,if this coach has half a brain ,he’ll go get either the hybrid shaq from Washington safety (GM cliff) mentioned or Collins in the draft ..?Get me a Brian Dawkins clone …get me a desean clone …stretch the field …create space …cut ties with the old regimes under achievers …and let’s focus on the prize …the draft …free agents ..restructured deals ,cutting guys …it’s like baking a Super Bowl cake …love this shit ….

How big is Joe Hayden? Someone please post the size difference between Hayden a top 5 corner in the NFL vs Boykin. While your at it throw in Grimes. I cant imagine Hayden being no more than 1 inch and a couple pounds bigger than Boykin.

Anyone overly impressed with QB B Hundley this morning?
He’s thrown short a few times on the Deep Pass Drills
And a little late on the timimg, sideline routes…

Maybe he’s nervous, but has not impressed thus far in the Passing Drills

Bridge has a cannon but will need 2-3 Seasons to refine mechanics, reads, etc .. He may go Undrafted and could be signed as an UDFA and practice squad material for 2015, then 3rd String in 2016 and see where he is by 2017.. I would not use a Draft Pick on Bridge..

The combine doesn’t matter…Hell, Jeff George and Heath Shuler kicked ass at the combine…..

You want to know how Mike Mamula did at the combine?

It’s about skill set and Chip orginally recruited Hendley for what he believed to be a player with promise and the skill set to run his offense successfully. If Mariota falls through then this will be Chip’s chance to mend an NFL QB tailored for his scheme.

Steve Mariucci: Jameis Winston ‘most astute X’s and O’s guy’

By Mike Huguenin
College Football 24/7 writer
Published: Feb. 21, 2015 at 02:16 p.m.

Put former NFL coach Steve Mariucci among those in Jameis Winston’s corner.

During the NFL Network’s coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday, host Rich Eisen talked about an interview Mariucci held with Winston for a segment that will be featured on NFL Total Access at 7 p.m. ET Saturday.

Eisen said Mariucci called Winston “the most astute X’s and O’s guy that he’s ever put on the board” for his draft breakdowns.

“He was not only answering the questions that Steve was throwing at him but anticipating what that question might lead to next and answering that question before Steve even posed it,” Eisen said.

NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock said Mariucci’s comments were in line with what he had heard about Winston’s football IQ and work ethic, which he has been told are “off the charts.”

But Mayock also brought up Winston’s myriad off-field issues, saying the hardest part about Winston’s evaluation was his “predictive behavior off the field.”

Winston took the field along with the rest of the quarterbacks at the Scouting Combine on Saturday, putting on an impressive display in throwing drills.

I’ve have never heard Winston say anything that would remotely suggest he wants a normal life. His presser was excellent, he has charisma, great communication skills and is a star waiting to happen, and not only does he know it, but wants it. A normal guy is not going to put himself in a position of attention by saying “I am going to win the SB next year”. Love his confidence, that’s what I want the leader of my team to have.

How do you know what superbowl winning QB’s have done in their past, especially prior to the internet and all of the other media outlets we now have to expose people? But if you do, please enlighten me. Winston is a kid, I have done stupid things as a silly adolescent too, it did not mean I was not bound to do great things in my life. Good lord, get off the pedestal.
You have this phony set of criteria that has no merit in the world of sports, just in your head. As I said, you have no idea what superbowl winning QB’s have done in their past while in college..just stop with the nonsense.

He is going to make mistakes along the way, his job is to learn from them and not make them again. That is the sign and true measure of growth and maturity. I’m not a Winston guy. I think he’s a superb talent.

My thing with Winston is, if trouble found you in college and your decision making is suspect…you’re asking for problems once you hit the pros.

I’m around pro guys literally everyday where I live…some are friends…first thing out of their mouths that first year or two can ruin you…both on and off the field.

In a weird way..I think the eventual civil lawsuit he will settle will help him because a significant amount of his first contract will be gone. I don’t see endorsements for him either.

He is going to have to keep his nose clean early.

And honestly, a lot of college kids find trouble in college, they just do not get the on air treatment because they are your average joe public. However, they tend to go on, get a career and become productive law abiding citizens. I suspect and expect Jameis will be in that crowd.

EHL I hate to throw the race card or stereotypes but I read on here over and over about Winston being the next Jamarcus and all the lazy comments usually code words when it comes to black QB’s, I’ve had to come here and blast folks for not knowing how much of a football lifer this kid is or making people understand he’s not a mobile runaround QB. Off the field he’s the typical immature young man and that needs to be corrected. Just because he’s black and went to FSU doesn’t not make him EJ Manuel.

Just to review your position Biglion:

Anyone mentions Jamarcus Russel and that’s “code words when it comes to black QBs”

Anyone mentions Johnny Manziel and its a “token white guy you can parade around anytime there is a black qb you and captain dick head find a way to bash”

Good stuff.

All black QBs are untouchable. Cannot be mentioned and clearly never criticized or compared to anyone.

You might want to reconsider that position a bit.

Oh…and BTW – I never mentioned Jamarcus, or Manziel or anyone else this thread. All I said was that Winston said “I” in his interview 1000x….and guys that talk like that often fail.

BTW – I think, from all accounts, Winston has a very good chance to be successful. People say he;s a smart guy. But I also think he’s a shitty interview and that’s a big red flag to me.

I think Mariotta comes from a RO offence and I think the RO stinks.

Report: Jameis Winston’s football knowledge impressing clubs

Posted by Mike Wilkening on February 21, 2015, 7:50 PM EST

Jameis Winston
AP

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston’s knowledge of the game reportedly caught the attention of numerous club officials who met with him this week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

In a story published Saturday, Bleacher Report‘s Mike Freeman quoted an unnamed evaluator who raved about Winston’s “[football] IQ.”

Said the evaluator: “I think he’s probably the smartest player I’ve ever interviewed.”

Freeman also reports that Winston had been compared to Peyton Manning from a football intelligence standpoint “several times” in the reporter’s discussions with club officials.

With Winston likely to be a high draft pick who could be in contention to start as a rookie, the raves he’s drawing for his understanding of football concepts could augur well for him being handed the keys to an offense right off the bat.

Most Scouts/GM’s agree that only QB Winston can come in Day 1 and be a Starter where most think Mariota will need a while to adjust to Pro-Style Offense and would probably start as a back up and play after 8-10 Weeks or so like Vikings T Bridgewater last Season was which is not a bad thing

Question of the day if Mariota is on the board at 12 when the Browns pick would trade shady and foles for there 12 overall pick and there 2nd Rd pick. The eagles would then have picks 12,20,43,52.

Shiiiiit..if the Browns were stupid enough to do that…I would do it in a heart beat. Mariota and Melvin Gordon in the first…I’m all in!
Mariota will be long gone by 12 though.

No deal…..unless they want Connor Barwin, and Evan Mathis…then they have a deal

Dumb to trade Shady, and I think Foles will have a good year..

Focus on the Defense

Defense can be built up in 2nd-5th rounds. I do not think the Eagles are getting to SB while Shady is the runner he currently is, as much as I like him, I do not see it happening, so I hit the reset button!

Connor Barwin and Evan Mathis is bringing no value in a trade for Draft picks…c’mon Cliff, you know that is no value, and I like Barwin…but c’mon man!

What’s up Eagle??!!….hey bruh they both have value – how much would depend on the appeal to the other team.

Connor Barwin’s value will never be higher after the aberration of a season he had last year – and some sucker may look at that and be like hey lets do it.

Both made the Pro Bowl if I’m not mistaken right??…throw in a future pick and there is SOME value

Evan Mathis’ age kills his value right there, he is no spring chicken. Connor Barwin is a good player, however, he is not going to get much in terms of trade value for draft picks.
Cliff, you yourself have argued that the probowl is no true measure of a players actual ability because you poo pooed it when players you are not high on makes the pro bowl. If you do not like Barwin and think this past season was an aberration, what makes you think the Browns would give up a lot for him. You can’t have it both ways. Basically you are saying “Here Browns, take these guys I don’t value, but give me value for them”. Lol C’mon Man!

I have never stated that the Pro Bowl isn’t a true measure of a players talent, – That would always be Paulman’s excuse to dismiss DeSean Jackson’s value.

But I also recognize the politics in the voting process. If a player has a good season, and it stands out…politics dictate that player should get in.

Some GM’s look at the fact their getting a young Pro Bowler, look at that alone as value, and completely overvalue a player. My hope would be the Browns would be dumb enough to do that. I’m not saying it could happen because this is all hypothetical…

If you think about it, isn’t that what the Browns did when they traded Trent Richardson to the Colts?????

When players you don’t like make it to the pro bowl and it is brought up to you, you are rather dismissive of that accomplishment. You did it with Barwin this year.
The Browns were smart enough to get rid of him, not take him on after his lackluster NFL performance.
A 33 year old first time PB Guard is getting nothing in return of value.

Who has made the Pro Bowl that I don’t like other than Barwin Eagle???

I felt the same way when Babin made the Pro Bowl. I said then that his season was an aberration because, to me it was obvious he wasn’t as talented as his stats exaggerated, and he was cut the next season.

I hold that same analogy to Barwin. Defenses will see how often he is on the field than any other Defensive Player in the front 7, and how he is used and adjust. The Better teams they played did, and you would see him disappear in those games. If he proves me wrong, God Bless him, and I will admit I’m wrong. Until then, that’s how I feel.

I hear you on Mathis, throwing him in is just me insisting on youth movement on the Offensive Line, and a little more cap relief. Like I said the original question was nothing more than Hypothetical

Ok…but you can not offer up Barwin as a blue chip trade piece when you think so little of him yourself.

I wasn’t serious…..I was being sarcastic. I know the Eagles won’t trade him they overvalue him too much.

But I think OLB, and ILB are absolute must haves in this draft. What would you do, if Barwin gets hurt, and is out for 6-8 weeks?? Who backs him up Marcus Smith?

We better put some talent behind him, and the entire LB Unit. We can’t have anymore soggy Band-Aids like Casey Matthews, Brandon Graham, and Emmanuel Acho, and rationalize they are going to be consistently effective..

As far a using him as a chip in a trade – Its all about the other teams perception of him.

My point about the Browns, and Trent Richardson was that they didn’t think much of him at the time of their trade – and this was after he ran for over 1300 yards his rookie season – year 2 they saw his rookie year was an aberration. The Colts saw him as valuable. All you need is one sucker for you to benefit…

Cliff I think foles has a good yr also but if the Browns put that type of deal on the table you chip has to think about it chip gets the qb he wants and you get shady’s money off the books and you can still fix the defense as well as get a replacement for shady.

what make you think Foles will have a good year?

@ Songs – Healthy Offensive Line for starters for continuity, which was one of the major factors in the results he got last year…..

The protection he got last year was terrible, and Foles tried to force things which got him in trouble. Eliminate that issue, and he stands vertical, confident, which gives him the time to make smart decisions, and eliminate making too many mistakes.

Chip should swallow his pride, and admit it was a mistake to cut DeSean, and make things right for this Offense, and bring in someone to replace what we lost in his absence. That also effected Foles.

I can only hope his QB Coach is competent enough to bring the best out of him. That was also a major reason for his regression losing Bill Lazor…

I think he will have a good season, while Mariota struggles, and we thank God that Chip didn’t trade for him.

I’m not worried about Shady’s money, I would be concerned about replacing Shady’s production.

Every year around draft time so many get so enamored with some of these prospects that common sense goes out the door..

Some are saying RB’s are a dime a dozen…that’s a bunch of crock, because not all RB’s have the ability, or the talent to produce CONSISTENTLY – like Shady, like Matt Forte, like Jamaal Charles – and with all due respect – Melvin Gordon is not going to replace Shady.

So for me no deal involving Shady. Find the cap relief somewhere else.

Biglion,

You said you’ve read over and over on here how Winston has been compared to Jamarcus?

Where?

By whom?

Woo wrote that Winston is Jamarcus?

You know what’s funny about all this? Winston was “I, I, Iing” through his press conference and I said to my wife, “Watch this, I’ll make a bunch of guys scream racism all afternoon” and typed out the things he was saying.

Within minutes you and Zilents were in here, sanctimonious as ever.

Too funny.

Puppet.

You go research it Vinnie it’s been said, and who screamed racism? I screamed stupidity by you with your he said I too much shit. So back to your premise only QB’s who somehow don’t answer questions with I are successful? And you calling someone a puppet? Does the name Foles mean anything to you? Now that is something to laugh at.

Like I said months ago.. Marriotta to the Eagles is a pipe dream unless we mortgage 3 years worth of drafts. He’s not falling top 5 let alone top 10.

Even Paulman is flip flopping back to this side.

Chip shocks the world and trades all assets for Winston. The Marriota talk was all a smokescreen as he coveted Winston the whole time. lol
