Eagles Position Coaches Upclose At NFL Combine

EricKendricks1I spent the weekend with the 35 linebackers, who are likely to be selected in this year’s NFL Draft.  My job along with another former NFL linebacker, Ed Reynolds, was to talk to the group of young linebackers about being a professional.  We interacted with them and talked to them about displaying the character and self-responsibility, which will help them succeed in the NFL.

I was down on the field of Lucas Oil Stadium and I got the chance to get a look at the young players up close as well as the coaches and scouts.  I checked out the workouts of Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, as well as the interaction between the two youngsters.

The NFL Combine is a madhouse with everybody scurrying back and forth from the stadium to the hotel in order to get all of the information they can on the prospects.  The players are tested physically and psychologically.  Some of the kids were asking me, “Why are they asking us all these crazy questions”.

These youngsters are millennials, who don’t return phone calls, they only return text messages.

I had some fun with UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks.  I kidded him about his brother, Mychal, who he has been competing with since he was a toddler.  During the workout, Eric came to me and said, “Take that Mychal”, after he jumped 38″.  Eric is a lot like his brother.  He’s a very good athlete, but he’s a bit undersized.  Like his brother, he’s a playmaker with a great feel for the game.

I met Bryce Hager, who is Brett Hager’s son.  Of course Brett used to play linebacker with the Birds and I could see the sound fundamentals in his son.  The youngster’s a very good athlete, who will be able to be the signal caller for a defense in the NFL.

It seems the Eagles organization has put more weight on their coaching staff in making player evaluations.  At the NFL Combine this past weekend, Eagles position coaches were down on the field checking out their position players up close.

Eagles outside linebackers coach Rick Minter was down on the field with me and the linebackers as they ran their 40 yard dashes, did the broad jump, vertical jump, agility and pass dropping drills.  He wasn’t missing a thing as he got as close as he could to the young backers.

Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland could have been working out the offensive linemen himself.  He was looking at things from a coaches perspective, right up on the action.  Being on the field gives a coach the chance to hear what the players are saying as they workout.

A coach can get the chance to see and hear who has leadership qualities and which players are complainers.

From a draft strategy standpoint, I could see the Birds selecting an offensive lineman or two in this draft.  It would make sense for them get a young offensive lineman who could start out at guard and move to tackle a few years down the road when Jason Peters calls it quits.

You seem to be implying that there are 21 other positions besides QB that get drafted. I recommend checking that with all the draft experts here who have deemed picks aside from QB as irrelevant.

Isnt it funny how about 5-6 gcobbs posters draft board last year would of been 10 times better than what the Eagles actually drafted and they didn’t go to the combine, one workout or breakdown any film.I could of made better pics from my living room and called them in from my cell phone by just looking at Mels best available list. lol SMH.

exept of course when you look at gcobb posters and mel et al as far as draft 13 is concerned. Saw a report on it yesterday- Espn- Joekel, fischer, jordan and austin relative disappointments so far– LaNe Johnson and Ertz pretty good players.
The draft has its hits and misses. and I guess there is a wide range of what some people call a hit vs. what others call a hit.

my point is that anyone of us could go to anyone of these mock drafts, scouting reports see who they have going 1-32 in each round and say “yeah’ or ‘nah’- further its completely subjective as to what is a hit in round ‘x’ and what is a bust.

I have watched a total of maybe 2 college football games on tv this year, one college major college game and one mid major college game in person about 10 minutes of the combine — before the draft i will come up with the top 10 picks, and be right on 6 of them– there is an over abundance of info out there.
the guys that get paid to draft have an entirely differeent agenda then we do as fans.

How does it change the fact that we’re right more than they are??

Yes they get paid but not everyone is high on the same prospects they are…

When I said Trent Richardson was nothing special – NO ONE WAS SAYING THAT – and he wasn’t

I know some will use the Lame Johnson, Zach Ertz criticism, but even the Eagles Coaches see Johnson has a ways to go even to meet reasonable expectations – did you watch Phillytalk.com??? – even Spadaro, who is a homer – agreed with that….

and Ertz hasn’t done anything yet; Yes you see flashes, but I swear he could sit on the sideline in a port potty, and walk out you would scream he’s great. Last year was the season he was suppose to supplant Celek right?….why didn’t it happen?

Celek even compromised his own production – again to help the Offensive Line block – ironically who does he line up right next to??……. I wonder why he has to say in to block if he is so great???

When it comes to these draft picks it’s beauty in the eyes of the beholder, but some of those same guys seem to fall in love with the same overhyped, overrated prospects, because they are exposed to those same mocks, and yet some still can’t get it right.

So Dags point is legit, because they haven’t done any better than most of us…especially the Eagles scouts, and GM’s

This was very predictable and really not surprising with Casey or Herremans.. Chip Kelly will have to show his Balls when it comes
to Dealing with Trent Cole, D Ryans and Cary Williams
Now Williams may take a little while since they are very thin at CB and they may have to wait until they Sign a Free-Agent CB
Cole and Ryans simply need to have Contracts reworked and reduced or they need to go.. Can Chip handle this piece…

This is all predictable, Cole n Graham are next, with those two savings you use it to pick up Worilds, with the extra left over you get your backup, if your gonna move forward then do it across the board, forget all that keeping Cole at a cheaper price, same with Williams, he goes, you take his 8.5 million, add a little n get Maxwell, this should all be simple math without hurting your cap, your cutting guys with no or little cap hit n giving it to better players, this is why I say we don’t need Roseman, it’s not rocket science.

Graham is a Free-Agent and will be moving on, Since he is not currently under Contract, him leaving does not impact or save any $$$ from the Salary Cap as Cutting Players who are under Contract as Casey,Herremans, Cole, Cary Williams, etc,etc
Remember the Following 2014 Eagle Players are Free-Agents and not under Contract for 2015
J Maclin, B Smith, C Polk, C Thornton, B Graham, B Fletcher, N Allen, Casey Matthews, J Maehl & M Sanchez

2 Year Deal at $4-$5 Million Total.. He’s played a lot of Games..

Don’t be surprised to see the Eagles at #20 Draft OL Cameron Erving
from Florida State who can play Center,Guard or Tackle
Erving goes at 6-5 313lbs and played OT his Junior Season and then switched to Center last Season for the Seminoles
Tobin and Gardner can Play RG for the Eagles but Erving could be a nice Pick for the Long-Term and even swtich out to OT when Peters Retires

I could really see the Eagles Trading Back, to let’s say, the Colts at (#29) who want and need RB M Gordon or T Gurley to take some Pressure off of QB A Luck…. and then Selecting OL Cameron Erving at #29 while picking up a 3rd Round Pick in the Process

022615_dez_bryant_mom_launchDez Bryant’s mom sat in front of a camera and told cops the NFL star roughed her up, threatened her and ripped her shirt during a 2012 incident in Texas … and TMZ Sports has the interview video.

Dez was arrested for assault following the incident … but the charge was eventually dropped when Dez cut a deal with prosecutors — which required the NFL star to stay out of trouble for the following year (he did).

But in the video, Bryant’s mother Angela describes a heated exchange between herself and Dez — which started when Dez “was trying to fight my brother.”

Angela says she tried to stop Dez — and warned him that he was going to get in trouble with the Dallas Cowboys — but she claims he only got angrier and turned the rage on her.

After allegedly grabbing her, smacking her with his baseball cap and tearing her shirt … Angela says Dez “started talking about how he’s going to knock me out.”

Angela says she wanted to contact Jerry Jones to discuss the incident — so he could help Bryant moving forward.

The cop at the scene said he didn’t see any blood or bruising on Angela — but pics were taken for police records.

We reached out to Dez and Angela for comment — no word back from either side.

yeah the Maxwell thing– I just don’t know. We have all seen seattle in the playoffs for sure, we know that Sherman shuts down half the field. Does that mean Maxwell gets more help? or does it mean he sees more action and does a pretty good job with it… I quite honestly don’t know-
what I do know and say on here all the time- the shiniest FA are usually not the best FA signings– it is tried and true

I am not busting your chops, but, misspelling a word is not a valid indicator of a persons intellect or cognitive ability. Especially on a blog we all talk trash on. Hell, as long as I can understand the message being communicated I could care less about the spelling. If the spelling is so bad that it interferes with me comprehending the message..well that is a problem. Anyway, we all make spelling and grammatical errors on here. The fact is none of us speak the king’s English or spell every word phonetically correct. It’s no big deal…Chill fellas!

Ebonics is another example of the black man holding himself back….there is real racism, systemic racism but those things are ‘justifiable’ in some minds because the black man makes a clown of himself by refusing to speak in a way that conveys education, success and conformity….

Let me continue.. I spent a good part of my professional career trying to help kids, many of them were of color. I tried with all of them to direct them to college or a trade. To speak as a man not as a clown, to speak to people as if every conversation was a job interview. That speaking correctly was a sign of your character, your intellect and your commitment to excellence.
To many individual kids I was successful, some I was not…but society as a whole would be better off if more adopted it….

Funny AA kids that assimilate seem to overcome institutional racism much easier… Those that try to keep it real don’t.
Since this is a sports blog look at AA athletes that assimilate, cut off their posse (leaches) to those that keep it real…. Look at the endorsements, the respect and the overall health of their hard earned fortunes….

How is that working out.
If you truly think ebonics is the reason behind the problem AA’s face you are clueless. I spoke ebonics as a child, while in college and when I was amongst friends. However, there is a time and place for everything. When in the business/professional world, I conduct myself in such a fashion. When I am in my domicile or with friends I speak the way I choose to…mostly in an educated way, but that is by choice .For me it has worked out well as I am very educated and a successful professional.
You paint people you do not know with a broad brush based on how they communicate on a blog. Some very educated people are some of the biggest criminals on the face of this planet.

Are you familiar with Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences? If not, perhaps you should acquaint yourself with it.
The problem with the AA youth of this country is not taking their education seriously, not speaking ebonics…there is a difference.

Once again, is ivoryonics the reason that white youths I see standing in the street begging for money while I am driving by the cause of their homelessness? Are they looked at as clowns. Slang is slang, but then again, there is white noise and black noise. That is also the name of a book that you may find of interest.

I agree with you on the Cosby rape charges and what he says about urban kids wearing pants down to the bottom of the seat of their pants. Lol..Cosby spoke ebonics as a youth too…did not hold him back.
I notice you have ignored whether or not ivoryonics holds white youths back.

If you have read Howard Gardner then you understand that judging a person’s intelligence based off of their communication skills is not a true measure of overall intelligence.

Check the world population there are plenty of people procreating out there…a few gays won’t cause extinction ….and that my friend is science!
So what of they marry? How does that effect me? I’ve live across the street from two dudes for 20 years… Recently they went and got married…, changed nothing… They still get tomatoes from my garden, clear my driveway with their snow blower and still wait at the bus stop with their kids… Wtf
I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t notice you on the locker room

Jake you do realize that ‘straight’ dudes who are afraid of gays and think that all gays want to fuck them are actually closeted gays themselves? They hide behind their fear as a way of masking their homosexual tendencies,..good luck man

Hac you think you know a lot but you know jack, you collect ed a paycheck, joined the uniion, took summers off, had 2.5 kids, and now knows everything from gays to the problems of inner cities

typical bleefing heart liberal who knows all the problems but doesn’t do squat, would never give a dollar to a drunk on the street but would be the first to lecture him

You never lived in the city and you never broke bread or git drunk with all the unfortunate s, you sit around your beachside house with your white friends and talk about everyone else’s problems

You truly don’t know shit…liberal…that is hilarious …I voted for Reagan in 80, my first and have NEVER voted for my high profile neighbor. Served breakfast at a Sunday morning mission, took summers off after working with mostly inner city kids..oh and summers off included 3 days per week InThe weight room, doing a two week youth football camp and our own camp opening around August 15….
I don’t own a beach house… My good neighborhood friends are white and two of them are gay, my mentor is AA and have gotten drunk with him many times….he is a proud and good man…I have had these same conversations with him and I assure you he is as equally frustrated.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer appears to have some positive news regarding the Eagles and Jeremy Maclin contract’s situation. According to McLane, the two sides “weren’t significantly far apart” the last time he checked. There’s also some information on what a potential Maclin contract would look like. From McLane’s recent column (bold emphasis mine):

“Maclin should be the No. 1 priority for the Eagles before free agency starts on March 10. They lose him and they’re really going to have to pay if they want to sign a free agent of comparable skill — if there is one remaining. It shouldn’t come to that. Maclin wants to stay, the Eagles want him, and last I heard they weren’t significantly far apart. He should end up with a contract somewhere in the $9.5-$10 million a year range with most of around $20 million guaranteed in the first two years. If a deal can’t be struck by Monday afternoon, the Eagles will have to decide whether or not to use the franchise tag ($12.8 million). It’s unlikely the Eagles will want to pay Maclin that much over one season. He rolled the dice signing a one-year contract and delivered a career season (85 catches for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns) in 2014, but Maclin is still viewed around the league as just a smidge below the elite set of receivers. Kelly probably places more worth on Maclin because he knows the intangibles (full effort, team leader, high character) he brings to the table, but the Eagles would probably only use the tag to buy time and keep Maclin off the market.”

McLane’s last point there is key. The Eagles have until Monday 4:00 PM EST to apply the franchise tag, if they want to use it. And even if the team does use it, that doesn’t necessarily mean Maclin has to play out the 2015 season on the one-year tender. For example, back in 2011 the Eagles used the franchise tag on Michael Vick before later agreeing on a long-term contract extension.

If Maclin isn’t tagged or re-signed by Monday, Philadelphia will have just over a week until March 10 when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. It’s also worth noting the “legal tampering period” begins on Saturday, March 7.

With that said, it still seems like a deal is bound to get done. Maclin has made it clear that he wants to stay. His actions also seem to back up his words. He’s been working out in Philadelphia this offseason. As of today he’s even participating in team charity events while wearing an Eagles jersey.

Like when Pailman said Maclin was gone to be a Chief.

And the reports are 20 million guaranteed the first two years with a 9mil avg. which is exactly a fair market deal for his tier level.

Fraudman FlipFlop.

If the Eagle overpay for Maclin they will not see another productive season as the one he produced this past season. He will go back to the average Maclin we have always seen. It’s no theory that players really give it their all when that big payday is on the line, just like we found out with that piece of human excrement Riley Cooper. Eagles need to move on and, let Maclin walk. I would bring in a young hungry player from the draft that has something to prove at WR. If you really look at it closely Maclin’s numbers aren’t all that much better than Jordan Mathew”s rookie season accept for this past season.

Eagles signed ILB Brad Jones, formerly of the Packers, to a two-year deal.
Cut by the Pack 10 days ago, Jones had also visited the Titans. Coming off a thoroughly underwhelming 2013-14, Jones will fill-in/compete opposite Mychal Kendricks as DeMeco Ryans recovers from a torn Achilles’ tendon. Jones was primarily a special teamer last season.
