Chip Kelly Showed His Cards On LeSean McCoy A Year Ago

Philadelphia Eagles Vs. Denver BroncosIf there had been any doubt up until now, make no question about it, this football team is NOW being run by Chip Kelly.

LeSean McCoy was going to make over $9.75 million dollars in this upcoming season with the Eagles.   I think it’s very clear that Kelly wasn’t awed by McCoy’s performance in his offense and obviously wasn’t willing to give McCoy the compensation he wanted, so he has traded him away.

I’m surprised that Kelly went through with the deal, but I knew he didn’t see as much value in McCoy as many people figured he did.  If you want to see the true heart of a NFL coach or front office guy, you don’t listen to what he says, you look at what he does.

There were many times in 2014-15 season, when you could see that Chip Kelly had a great play design, which probably was going to result in a touchdown or at the least a big play. Many times, he would have either Darren Sproles on the field or Chris Polk, but not LeSean McCoy.  McCoy pointed this out during the season and it frustrated him.  He didn’t like the fact that Sproles and Polk were getting many of the prime carries.  That’s why deep down in his heart, I’m sure that McCoy probably feared this might happen.

Former NFL MVP Ladanian Tomlinson, now of the NFL Network, says McCoy told him, “Kelly phased him out of the offense in 2014”.

Think about it, here you have a play that you know is going to work in a situation near the goalline or at least on the other team’s side of the 50 yard line.  Kelly would have Sproles or Polk in the game, but not McCoy, that said a lot to me.  I don’t think he liked the way McCoy danced many times in the backfield, instead of following his blocking and hitting the hole.  There were many times, when McCoy would take a play somewhere it wasn’t designed to go and I think Kelly wants his backs to take the ball into the hole he designed for it to go into.

Again, remember this principle in trying to find the true beliefs and feelings of a NFL coach or front office person.  Focus on what they do rather than what they say.

Who plays and who gets paid says it all.  Don’t focus on what is said during interviews because many times that is misleading.

Chip Kelly believes that he can design a run offense that will work without having to pay a King’s ransom to a running back.  McCoy is set to make over $10 million this season and he wants a new deal. I think the Eagles are going to take the field next year with Sproles, Polk and a rookie running back.

They’ll play situational football with the three backs sharing the carries and playing time.  You could see that Kelly values Sproles and Polk more than most people think.

Kelly knows this young linebacker, Kiko Alonzo and the kid is a player.  He is an inside linebacker and played for Kelly at the University of Oregon.   You can pencil him in as a starter.  He will be on the field.  He was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in the league in eyes of many people in 2013.  He didn’t play at all during the 2014-15 season because of an ACL tear.  He’s an outstanding talent with great size and speed.

The Eagles have to take a good look at his knee in order to okay this deal.  Again, after watching the way Kelly used McCoy in the 2014 season, I’m not surprised.

I think the Birds will be making some major moves in free agency because they’ve freed up the a huge amount of money.  I think the game plan is to sign some free agents to rebuild the secondary, then they’re going to try to put together a package to move up to get Marcus Mariota.

Anybody with half a brain cell, has been pointing that out on here for months. “The Genius” is so caught up in this culture BS, & trying to be the smartest man in the room, he has know given away their 2 best playmakers, in a calendar year. DJax & Shady, for Kiko Alonzo. He better be getting a draft pick when this trade is official, & he better spend big & wise in FA, or it could get ugly, REAL FAST for “The Genius”!!!!

McCoy will count $12 million against the salary cap this season, a high number at a position whose value around the NFL is decreasing because capable running backs are fungible. He also ranked 15th out of 18 eligible running backs last season in Pro Football Focus’s “elusive rating,” an attempt to measure how many of a tailback’s yards are due to him and how many to his blockers.

Put simply, McCoy didn’t break tackles or make people miss like he used to, and possessing those traits is a prerequisite for a running back in Kelly’s offense. A lot of Eagles fans think of McCoy as he was or is. In a salary-cap league of abbreviated playing careers and non-guaranteed contracts, though, Kelly has to think of McCoy as he will be.

After processing I understand and think I like the trade. Kudos to big lion who said McCoy would never see the money, to fraudman who said that Kelly will take a couple of years to get rid of three guys who represent the AR era (vick, jax and McCoy) and to Vinnie who pointed out the structure of the rebuild.
moving forward now…. $50 in FA money, a coach who absolutely doesn’t like to have top paid guys, a 4th year qb with some success, a highly touted ex college player in the draft– if nothing else things will be exciting!
I am sticking to my guns on this one…he will get 2 of the higher end FA, he will get 2-3 middle level FA, keep foles and draft OL and DB in the first two rounds- I also think maclin is back.

I have a good friend in New York who is a die hard Bills fan and a knowledgable football fan. He is destroyed by this trade. He likes Shady and all but this is a direct quote “I would rather the Bills move the team to Toronto than give up Kiko”. While the media might act like we lost this trade, people need to remember that running backs are great and then all of the sudden they arent. Shady has had a ton of touches, he’s got maybe 2 or 3 years in him where he can be a top 10 R, and then it will be done, We have a 24 year old Pro Bowl linebacker, who paired with Kendricks could give us the best young inside linebacker duo in the league. Kiko could be even better than Kendricks! Stud against the run and fantastic in coverage. he is everything we have ever wanted. Believe me, if you have a good O line, you will have a good RB. In this league, you need stud defenders, and we just got one for a RB who will be worn down before we know it.

Kiko Alonso has the value of a 1st round pick in a trade. that is how good he is. Last time we made a big trade with Buffalo, we ended with the best Left Tackle in football. I’m loving this trade. Of course, Kiko NEEDS to be and stay healthy, but Chip just made a great trade.

I love the 2 linebackers in the middle now.
Shady has an amazing highlight reel, but the doesn’t show how often he would dance in the backfield and lose 3 instead of hitting the hole and accepting a gain of 3. Chip wants his backs to hit the hole like Sproles. The forth down touchdown to run by Sproles early in the season was the start of the end for Shady.

The End of Shady were the 2 big Hits to the Head he received in the Redskin Game (1 Early and 1 Late)
His Half-Hearted attempts at Pass-Protecting, His Costly Fumbles, His Yard Per Carry Dropping by a 1.2 Yards in 2014 which is Huge.
He’s had a Great Career with close to 2,000 Touches between Running and Receiving so he Body is bound to start breaking down.. He is not Old by any means, but he has a lot of wear and tear on his body but I expect him to have a great Season up in Buffalo where HC Rex Ryan will feed him the Rock

Anyone who is surprised that Shady is being traded didn’t pay attention to last year. A few of us pointed out that Shady was as good as gone this year. They weren’t going to pay him 10 mil or whatever it is.

And the only reason he’s getting traded and not cut is b/c there is a duck waiting that plays a position they need. It’s a dumb trade, but better than releasing him and getting nothing.

It will be interesting going into next year. Now the offense sucks too. lol. Seriously though FA and the draft will be VERY interesting this year.

I don’t think this has anything to do with the QB situation. If it did they would have gone for draft picks not a linebacker. The game is won at the line of scrimmage. McCoy isn’t a very good zone blocking running back (one cut until you get to the second level). There were too many 2-10 and 3 and outs because of McCoy’s running style. I think that Kelly feels that if he can get the Oline straighten out then the running back situation will take care of it self

During Kiko Alonso’s rookie year I was aware of the hype around him but rarely got to see him play. Did a lot of research on the guy and watched a lot of tape on him dating back to college and its clear to see that we traded an All-Pro RB for a future All-Pro LB. I mean this guy has it all. Size, speed, instincts, coachability, and always seems to be around the ball. He suffered the ACL injury in training camp last year so by this season he will be 100% and ACL injuries aren’t AS devistating as they were 10-15 years ago. Sad to see shady go, hes an all-time great eagles, face of the franchise, someone who was popular among the younger generation. But hes 26 and statistical analysis shows that RB’s decline at an alarming rate once they pass the age of 27-28. I think the timing was right for this trade, regardless if we think we can just plug another guy in at RB and proceed with the Chip Kelly experience.

G, I love your website and work but how the heck can they put a package together to move up? It would have to be 3 years of 1’s and maybe 2 or 3 year’s of 2’s and I’m not sure that does it. All for a MASSIVE risk in a kid whose game may very well NOT fit the NFL.

lmfao THIS THE GUY RUNNING THE SHOW

The Eagles had identified Oregon defensive lineman Taylor Hart as a player they wanted to bring on board. They had a third-round grade on the 6-6, 281-pound defensive end. But the draft is about maximizing resources and properly assessing value. So the team’s decision-makers had to decide when to pull the trigger.

“We had him rated a lot higher,” Kelly said. “I know I say that a lot, but that’s true for us. We would have taken him in the third. We’re fortunate. I think Howie did a great job of how we ordered it today. The other guy [Florida DB Jaylen Watkins] would be gone first, so let’s take him. He guaranteed me Hart would be there in the fifth, and he was right.”
