Make No Mistake: Marcus Mariota Will Be An Eagle

mariotaTuesday’s trade of running back LeSean McCoy made one thing perfectly clear to me: Marcus Mariota is going to be a Philadelphia Eagle.

Kelly isn’t going to try to build around Nick Foles. He’s not going to expect to contend for a Super Bowl this year. And this is only the beginning of the bold moves to come.

By trading a star in the middle of his prime like McCoy, Kelly is signifying that he’s preparing to tear his team down and rebuild things from the ground up. And he’s going to do it around his ideal quarterback.

Kelly knows that the team won’t be ready to contend with a rookie like Mariota right away. So he’s releasing his high-priced veterans and trading off the ones with value to help him pave the way for his future plans.

By taking away one of the franchise’s top players in McCoy, Kelly is also reducing the pressure on Mariota to succeed right away. By eliminating fan expectations, he creates an environment that will allow Mariota to grow.

Marcus Mariota is coming. It’s only a matter of when now, not if.

Chip Kelly has shown he’s bold and willing to make moves that many would consider crazy and unpopular. Last year’s release of DeSean Jackson and now the trade of LeSean McCoy state that loud and clear.

Kelly doesn’t care what you and I think. Kelly doesn’t care what his peers in the league think. Kelly operates as Kelly sees fit. And Kelly sees a team built around his quarterback, Marcus Mariota.

Whether this is the right or wrong move (and for the record, I strongly believe its the wrong one) Kelly is going to pay whatever price he has to in order to get his guy. An insane package of first and second round picks, Fletcher Cox, Mychal Kendricks, or Nick Foles, no player or pick is untouchable.

Kelly is marching on a path to the first pick in the draft to acquire Marcus Mariota, and no one in the league will stop him.

smokescreen huh?

What player is the Eagles playing coy for?

Chip isn’t playing the secret game ok?

He’s transparent with his aim towards getting Mariota and have already acquired the information for what it would take to get him.

The Eagles will not be in the 20th position when the clock start on draft day.

So, guys stop talking about how hard it will be to get down from 20.

They will be well within reach for Mariota before the draft begin.

I totally disagree with the “Kelly knows he’s not going to win for a couple of years’ thing…. I just don’t think that is an nfl thing– this isn’t the nba-
I don’t see him going 20-12 and then say that 6-10 is acceptable… no way- your going to spend $50M in FA and for a 6-10 team? no way! “hey mcourty, SB champ come to our team where we are grooming a QB project”– no way!

How could it be a dream team scenario?

Revis or the other corners are not Asmo so give me a break talking about Reid’s last ditch effort to salvage his job.

It’s Chip reputation on the line so let him field his team.

I think this is an incredibly incorrect opinion. Pro Bowl stud linebackers are MUCH more difficult to find than running backs who can put up over 1,000 yards. That position relies upon the offensive line. McCoy has had 1800 touches, that is a ton for a rb, he probably only has a couple years left of great football. Don’t get me wrong, I love Shady and I appreciate everything he has ever done, but we got a LB that would be a top 5 pick in the 2013 draft if they would redo it. A stud who had 160 tackles, 4 picks, 2 fumble recoveries and 11 tackles for a loss his ROOKIE year. That’s Luke Keucky type production. They dont grow on tree’s like RB’s do. We have just improved our team, have the money to sign Maclin and other top guys, can pick up a great young RB in the draft, and win games in 2015. Denny, whether or not they do get Marcus Mariota, you are dead wrong about this team tearing down. We are building up, getting younger and better.

I agree with you anti. When you look at the # of touches, declining production last year and combine it with the huge cap number, trading for this stud LB makes good sense. Kelly knows that he will be able to get his offensive production by adding a couple of lesser RB’s who will run North-South. By adding the ILB, he will also save additional $ by cutting the injured Ryans. Kelly is showing that he is willing to make bold, and difficult decisions. The downside may be that for a coach that preaches “culture-first”, these and past moves may be seen by players as more evidence that this is a business and there is very little loyalty coming from this organization.

Personally I believe they will keep Ryans for the veteran leadership. Also he wont HAVE to be 100% right away since we have to excellent starters in Kiko and Kendricks. But Ryans value goes beyond just his solid play on the field.

again we all have our opinions- it can be read two ways- the house cleaning is official and foles will be part of the house keeping… I can see it- I see it the other way, clean the house but keep some of the younger parts and continue to win- I just don’t believe that doing a total rebuild is the way this guy will go- how can you recruit FA with a rookie QB— all these FA are out there now reading the internet–on their visit “chip I’d love to take a multi-million dollar contract from you but who is your qb? are you dumping all these picks (my potential team mates) for a rookie QB to BUILD around…? ” —

Again Need. 2 Cbs, S, OLB, OG, RB and WR. All starters who are required. And need to shore up Cox and Kendricks.

Eagles have what? 60 million in cap?

$15 million for Maclin

45

15 Million for Cox

30

7 mill for Kendricks (Probably low)

23

Now still need a 2 CBs, S, OG

What is it…4 mill for rookies?

19

McCourty?

That’s 15 easy.

4 left…

Wait what? Still need 2 cbs, OG, and an RB…no starters in these positions.

No big deal….3rd and 4th round 1st year starters is the way to go!!!

There’s an extra 15 for 2 dbs, a OLB/DE and an OG. is that enough?

You are as clueless as they come! 1st of all, Cox is already under contract for this year, for $3,258,036M & ain’t getting a raise, while already being under contract. If anything, he’ll get an extension after the season. Calvin Johnson made $16M+ last year. You think Maclin is deserving of the 2nd highest paid WR contract???? Kendricks same as Cox, he is under contract for $1,414,141M. MCourty ain’t getting $15M either. Whatever drugs you are doing, stop, & go get some help, before it’s too late!

What kind of ridiculous cap numbers is Vinnie talking about? Any contract that they would give to those players would be long term with the signing bonus prorated over the length of the contract. You think Maclin, McCourty, and Cox would have a 15 mil cap hit in 2015?

The Eagles mess up many things, contract structuring isn’t one of them.

Nobody has discussed this shady trade ,as I’m viewing it ..freeing up 12 million ,it’s getting a young stud LB and …fill in the 11-12 million…it’s a bold move ,as the tweets from the locker room have been bewilderment ..This Culture isn’t a culture ,but a locker room of chips guys ,who he feels will run through a wall for him..this is his vision. In two years this head coach has completely revamped the Eagles upstairs and now the locker room..I don’t know about trading a huge ransom to get a qb…he very well may ,drop down into the second round and retool with more picks ..if he were to bring dion Jordan in to replace graham /cole,he’d be getting his defensive front younger ,he could possibly extricate him for picks with Miami ,his focus will then turn to the replacements on the offensive line …and in FA he’ll solidify his back end ..I love what he’s doing ,he’s going to match up to beat NY and Dallas on the back end and with a lethal pass rush …

So our linebacker core could look like this

Barwin-Worilds on the outside
Kendrick-Alonso on the inside

Will cost about 7 million for Worilds, we save 8 mill from Cole plus 6 when we get rid of Ryans, that’s called a major score!

.we upgraded that position for 8 million, do the math, 14 million Cole n Ryan’s, 8 million Worilds n Alonso, savings of 6 million and we just made the linebacker position a strength, Great start for the new regime! Who said Chip doesn’t know what he’s doing?

Worilds- $8.5M
Moore- $5.5M
Culliver- $5MM
House- $5.5M
Boling- $5.5M
Locker- $2.5M

Total- $40M

That leaves $10M for draft picks, & if Ryans is released, or restructured, that’s more money in the pot! So we have zero issues signing, & fielding a much better, & improved squad next year! We’ll see, if “The Genius” is worthy of his unwarranted moniker, or his critics are right?

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the Eagles and free agent Jeremy Maclin have been “not as close recently” in contract talks.
Per beat writer Jeff McLane, a deal “was close for some time,” but the sides aren’t as near to compromising now and Maclin is “getting nibbles.” McLane says the Eagles must “up the ante” with Maclin after clearing a ton of cap room via the LeSean McCoy trade. If the Eagles lose Maclin, Jordan Matthews, Riley Cooper, and Josh Huff would be left as their top three receivers.

I don’t think this has anything to do with the QB situation. If it did they would have gone for draft picks not a linebacker. The game is won at the line of scrimmage. McCoy isn’t a very good zone blocking running back (one cut until you get to the second level). There were too many 2-10 and 3 and outs because of McCoy’s running style. I think that Kelly feels that if he can get the Oline straighten out then the running back situation will take care of it self

mhenski

March 4, 2015 10:17 am

A source informed ESPN’s Josina Anderson that LeSean McCoy is “frustrated” over being traded to the Bills and is “not going to make it easy, that’s for sure.”
“Of course he’s not happy,” added the source. “It’ll be interesting to see how this process plays itself out because he’s an interesting individual. … He was like ‘why me?'” Some are leaving the door open to McCoy possibly refusing to go to Buffalo, leading to the Bills possibly pulling out of the trade prior to it officially going through when the new league year opens March 10. But in all likelihood, the Bills will hand McCoy a new contract with more guaranteed money through 2015 and 2016 and let coach Rex Ryan work his magic as a coach with the ability to convince his players to “buy in.” Ryan’s the ultimate players coach.

Well?

We wanted them to address the defense right?

Now, we have a LB with a lil nasty in him…so the trade helps the defense.

I was tired of the dancing behind the line of scrimmage for losses and the continual lost for yards and a lack of Shady hitting in there short yard situations.

Chip will now get his guy at RB who immediately hits the hole and it gives us cap relief which will go towards helping the secondary with a 1st tier starter at Corner.

I love it because we have a coach that’s willing to do what he thinks is right building his team knowing it’s the coach who takes the fall when things go wrong…..

So at the least…we know where the buck stops.

I was so tired of weasels in the Eagles Front office operating in the shadows of ambiguity so when something went wrong they could scurry away pointing fingers without accountability.

No more!

We know who is calling the shots and Chip deserves the right to field the team he feels gives him the best chance to win.

What do we have to risk anyways?

what have we won here in Philadelphia?

It’s as if we’ve been programmed to accept mediocrity as success.

I would rather lose and find what it takes to build from scratch than have a team just good enough to win a division title.

We as Philadelphia Eagles fans really don’t know what it takes to win a Super Bowl because we have never won one.

I love the fact we finally have a coach who thinks out side the box and take some chances because that is what it takes to win in this league.

Risks are necessary!

I respect Chip for not putting his career in the hands of a pencil pusher who never achieved anything in this league.

Chip will get a RB in the draft that will be an rookie of the year consideration in his offense.

There’s no need to cry about any Reid leftovers because the Eagles have won nothing with them.

Let’s get behind Chip!

We have nothing to lose.

It’s not like we’re dismantling the Seattle Seahawks here.

When McCoy struggles, he tends to dance in the backfield. Nothing angers Kelly like throttled speed, and it boils to the surface against the Bucs on Oct. 13 when McCoy is slow to an opening.

On the sideline, Kelly unloads: “Hit the damn hole, Shady!”
GalleryCover Guy
Behind the scenes with Shady

The making of McCoy’s Mag cover. Warwick Saint

“There was no damn hole!”

“Shut up!”

McCoy heads to the bench. But he can’t let it go. He brings Kelly a photo of the play and says, “Do you see a hole?”

Kelly returns to the game, and McCoy returns to wondering whether he can coexist with his coach.

But in the team meeting the next day, Kelly says something the players have never heard so explicitly from a head coach: “Shady and I got into it, and I was wrong.”

It took a good bit denny for chip to make you believe he is going to do anything to get mariota. Remember when we lost to the saints in the playoffs? With all that has gone down since…feels like 5 seasons have passed. .. i don’t see maclin back..ryans gone .. i could see even a trade with moving Jason Peters a possibility. ..anything and everything is on the table with chip running the show. It’s scary..but at the same time it’s a fun journey to ride out and see where it takes us.

Lyons Yellin of WWL-TV in Louisiana has “heard rumblings” the Eagles have interest in free agent Mark Ingram.
Whereas Shady McCoy was an elusive east-west back, Ingram is a north-south runner whose addition in Philadelphia would constitute a changing of the guard. There were rumblings late in the year that coach Chip Kelly was displeased with McCoy’s tendency to freelance in his running game, which also led to Bryce Brown’s ouster last offseason. A more assignment-sound runner than McCoy, Ingram’s fantasy stock would skyrocket in Philly. Mar 4 – 11:31 AM

But Kelly always has been somewhat lukewarm in his praise of McCoy and didn’t hide his annoyance at the running back’s frequent indecisiveness, which contributed to a league-high 125 carries of zero or negative yards in 2013-14.

The above is why McCoy is gone.

With 7 open starting spots right now, 8 if you count the QB position….and with plans to use the next 3 years worth of first and second round picks to fill that one QB spot…..

…..its a good thing no other team has any cap space allowing the Eagles to fill the other 7 spots with whatever FAs they want, at whatever price they think is fair.

Vin, calm down! Help is on the way! It’s being reported as I predicted that the Eagles first target is Jason Worilds, then going for Ingram for RB, think about it, our linebackers would b Barwin n Worilds on the outside n Kendrick n Alonso on the inside, total upgrade! Got rid of 14 million is cap space once Ryan’s follows Cole, your putting out 8 million for Alonso n Worilds, great move all around, mark Ingram comes here on the recomendation of Chips O-line coach who was with him at Alabama, tell me again how we have all these holes with no way to fill them

I think those are great ideas.

All I’m saying is that’s all they are…ideas. Philadelphia isn’t the only team that’s going to be interested in Worlids.

That’s all I find amusing…the Fairy Free Agent Godmothers on here who seem to think the Eagles can wave the magic FA wand and fill the 7 now open roster spots…….

Fill 7 spots….but no high picks.

Easier said than done.

There are plenty of other teams out there with lots of cap space too….and several very attractive destinations with $$ to burn like Indy, and GB.

I just hope that the magic FA wand guys recognize that there are going to be more than 1 suitor for all these all-star players they think are suddenly going to appear to fill those 7 open roster spots……

Has a team ever found 7 new starters in FA?

And if they have (doubtful). Has it ever worked? (even more doubtful)
