Losing Jeremy Maclin Is Inexcusable

JeremyMaclin2Chip Kelly’s first major blunder of the 2015 off-season has occurred.

Chris Mortenson of ESPN reported late on Sunday that free-agent wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is expected to sign a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, reuniting him with former head coach Andy Reid.

With Maclin’s departure, the Eagles are suddenly left with a depleted group of wide receivers which would currently feature Riley Cooper and Jordan Matthews as their starting wideouts.

It’s an absolute joke that the Maclin situation has reached this point.

The Dallas Cowboys protected themselves by slapping the franchise tag on Dez Bryant. The Denver Broncos did the same for Demaryious Thomas. The Green Bay Packers, despite being deep at the position, made sure they got Randall Cobb locked up before free agency.

Why the Eagles didn’t apply the franchise tag to Maclin to protect themselves is beyond me.

With the other top wideouts all under team control with the franchise tag, naturally there were going to be suitors lined up across the league to acquire the services of a 27-year old receiver who just turned in a career year.

It’s a flat out joke that the Eagles didn’t work something out with Maclin long before free agency even began.

The Eagles can’t point to money being a problem. They spent the last two weeks clearing out payroll, giving themselves over $50 million of cap room to work with. They just dumped a boatload of money at Bryon Maxwell’s feet, yet wouldn’t go the extra mile to lock up a guy who had more than earned his big payday.

Maclin could not have carried himself any better than he did during his time with the Eagles. He fought hard to come back from his injury, turned in a strong season, and was also a model teammate. When Riley Cooper made his boneheaded comments about Maclin’s contract and playing time during the season, Maclin always took the high road when asked about it.

Kelly supposedly puts such a high value on culture and character guys, and Maclin was a player that fit that bill perfectly. And yet the Eagles somehow couldn’t find a way to keep such an integral part of their offense in place.

Chip Kelly might have been feeling high on himself after successfully replacing DeSean Jackson with Maclin last year, but he’s going to be in for a rude awakening this year.

You’re not Belichick, Chip.

When you’re offense lines up on Opening Day with Jordan Matthews, Riley Cooper, and Josh Huff combined with an aging Frank Gore in the backfield, you’re going to find that it’s suddenly much more difficult to move the ball and put up points.

This head coach’s plan has been completely baffling thus far, and if he truly plans on throwing away two to three year’s worth of top picks to acquire his system-quarterback, this team could be run into the ground much more quickly than people realize.

You are god damn right it is! Chip Kelly is a fucking retard.

You sign 32,000 year old piece of trash, over rated, no tread left Frank Gore to a 3 year deal and can’t sign Jeremy Fucking Maclin.

FIRE CHIP KELLY AND GIVE ME ROSEMAN BACK NOW.

We had a great nucleus of offensive talent with: DJax, Maclin & McCoy and now we have SHIT. I mean SHIT. we might get Mariota, but he will have to play w/ SHIT.

Doesn’t make sense to me. I’m off the Kelly bandwagon.. Today’s moves are inexcusable period.

People that wanted Gore are morons and anyone that wanted Maclin gone is even dumber.

This is: Depressing, disheartening, frustrating, sad, annoying.. THIS PISSES ME OFF. –I need a damn drink.

Chip is looking for bigger wrs. Maclin wanted too much money for his size. I’m cool with this move of letting him go. He’s a great route runner but he doesn’t fight for yards. On a 3rd and 9 if you throw a 6 yard curl to someone like boldin he’s gonna get the first down. Maclin is gonna go down or go out of bounds and not move the chains. He’s soft always has been and always will be

Exactly.

He def wants bigger WR – but where is he getting them? A rookie QB with rookie wideouts – that’s a lot going on. At least one quality vet – and I”m not even a Mac fan. Seriously if the KC contract is 10 or less then they shoulda matched. If it’s 11 then I understand but still.

I agree with this as well but the problem is we now have the worst WR corp in our division. I realize free agency and the draft are not finalized yet but this offense suddenly looks VERY pedestrian.

He didn’t successfully replace mac with Jax last year. He cost himself a playoff berth with that decision.

And that’s what’s interesting about this. Mac-Jax-Shady and an upgraded offense and you probably make the playoffs – maybe even win one depending on good the defensive upgrade was. Add in a better QB (Mariota may or may not be that) and all of a sudden things look interesting.

Now. Well now…we will see has never been more true.

And you still believing that releasing him didn’t matter is even more amusing.

I completely understand that Jax and McCoy were released ’cause of $ – but I also feel like no move was made to retain their services (restructures etc.) b/c they didn’t fit what Chip thinks he’s looking for.

So far however, doesn’t seem like the plan he had is coming to fruition. AND this gets a lot more interesting if Mac went to the Chiefs for similar dollars the Ealges were offering.

The frank gore move is great. I don’t know why ppl looking at that as a bad signing. So what he’s old. He can play. Look at what he did to us last year. look at what he did in a division with defenses like Seattle, Arizona and St. Louis. Them knew he was running the ball and still had trouble stopping him. Chip is looking for guys who move the chains not this dancing around putting us in 2nd and 12 situations. All he does is fall forward. All chip wanted McCoy to do was go north and south instead he danced his ass up outta to buffalo. Gore will put in work here and I’m sure chip will draft a future rb. There’s plenty in the draft

They look like Shadys numbers in his first five games last year, shady had over 300 carries last year for over 1300 yards n five TDs, Gore had a little over 250 carries for over 1100 yards with 4 TDs one had a 4.2 average n the other had 4.3, the only difference I see is the 6 million dollar differnce we save this year.

I liked the Shady trade.

But adding Gore is dumb. Coulda used a draft pick and gone younger and cheaper than Gore.

As old as he was he ran for over 300 yards his last two games of the year, tells me he wasnt run down, He’s probably looking at 200 carries which would be great cause that means sproles gets more touches this year, also Gores money is guranteed for this year at 5 million, if he dogs it he can go at the end of the year, this guy is in the mold of a TO as far as playing at a high level in their 30s, his track record proves it

He wasn’t run down because for most of the season he was splitting carries w/ Hyde. Why was he splitting carries? Because he was 31!

2 more things: 1st Kaepernick offers the dual threat possibility w/ each snap making it easier to create holes for Gore to run through. 2nd: Gore had a much better offensive line most of the season than Shady.

So yeah, when you have been splitting carries most of the season and you go up against a few teams that are easy to run on.. Maybe you can find something in the tank to have a good game..

But the fact is, he is not a special player anymore. He is a stop gap piece that has a maximum of maybe one good season left. Before yesterday, the Eagles were all about getting younger.

Now they just got older.

But I think what Maclin’s thinking is that if they bring Mariotta in, then his role will be to catch screens 15x a game – the Oregon way!

Why the fuck would anyone with an option want to play that. Tackled by DBs or tackled by LBs. Maclin chose DBs.

I can;t see any way for Foles to be on the team next year.

This entire offseason has been a complete shit-show.

Next year Mariotta throwing nothing but screens to Huff and Matthews, handing off to a RB that’s got 11 years of mileage on him, and then keeping it options only to get annihilated by 260lb linebackers 6x a game.

How can I not be excited about that?

Trust in Chip’s innovative offensive genius. What Mariota did in college as far as passing, can and will be done here. WR’s have run free in Chip’s Eagle offense, no reason to think things will not be different, having Mariota will loosen things up more. I’m excited if that move can be made.

But notice I said with the right QB and better defense it would mean more than a playoff win. And the moves right now are moving backwards not forward. Being a QB and a couple of corners away is diff than needing defensive AND offensive help.

A better defense last year with jax/mac/shady and are year ends a lot differently. And that’s with Foles/Sanchez playing. And why are you signing Gore if you’re not trying to win now?

relax people. its not the end of the world. FA and draft and trades aint done yet. Who did Seattle and NE have as stud WR’s anyway? Huh? Chip system is pure plug and play. We will get somebody else to plug in. Maclin had a choice. Besides Maclin knows Kelly is going to get Mariota and probably does not want to play with a rookie QB who may take a few years to get into SB. His choice. We will be fine after all is said and done.

The 49ers top receiver was the 42nd ranked reciever in the whole league, Gore had as many TDs as shady last year n only 200 yards less with almost 60 less carries, 4.3 average compared to 4.2 average, these guys on here are in panick mode, who caress about Maclin? The guys a straight number two receiver! Chip got 1300 yards from Djak year one n 1300 yards with Maclin in year two, know what that means? Whoever he gets n puts on that side will get 1300 yards in year three.

Chip Kelly has put so much pressure on this organization it is unbelievable. Every 3 and out, every game we lose, every week a receiver cant get open Chip will be BLASTED for his decisions. There will be no excuses good enough, there will be no dodging the media post game.. I read all these post about Gore. Give me a fucking break. He is old and isn’t a building block so whats the point of signing him? Find a young RB in the later rounds. Maclin made tough game saving catches routinely last year. Matthews, Cooper and Huff wouldn’t have made one of his highlight reel sideline catches he made. to save our assess. Chip cant win with his moves. Devin McCourty turns down Giants and Eagles, returns to Patriots

The Eagles are trying to fill the holes in their secondary with the top free agents on the market.

With a deal in place to sign cornerback Byron Maxwell away from Seattle, the Eagles have also set their sights on free agent Green Bay Packers cornerback Tramon Williams.

According to a person familiar with the situation who requested anonymity, the Eagles have shown an increased interest in Williams, even after reportedly getting a mega-deal completed with Maxwell over the weekend. No deal is to be announced, or technically completed until the start of free agency, Tuesday.

Williams, 31, rejected an offer of two years, $8 million to stay in Green Bay, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The report went on to say that Williams would prefer to stay with the Packers, but wants a three-year deal worth in the $5 million a year range.

Last year Williams, who has spent his entire career in Green Bay, led the team’s defensive backs in tackles with 71. He also led the team in passes defensed with 13 and shared the team lead in interceptions with three.

Green Bay, which came to terms on a new deal with wide receiver Randall Cobb, Saturday night, has a decision to make at cornerback between the veteran Williams and key backup Davon House, who is also scheduled to hit free agency, Tuesday.

Seattle, according to the Journal-Sentinel, could also be interested in Williams to replace Maxwell opposite Richard Sherman in its secondary.

The Eagles released its top cornerback from last season, Cary Williams, last week and is not expected to re-sign free agent cornerback Bradley Fletcher, it’s other starting cornerback from last season.

Franklin, a former second round pick of the Broncos out of the University of Miami, was one of the eight free agents NJ.com mentioned as potential targets for the Eagles.

The 6-foot-7, 320 pound lineman flits the big man profile that Eagles head coach Chip Kelly likes so much. Franklin began his career as a right tackle for the Broncos, but was switched to left guard last season and performed well. It wouldn’t be much of a challenge for him to move to right guard for the Eagles.

That’s where Herremans played for the past 10 years before being released last month to free up some salary cap space and also for the team to get younger at the position.

Franklin, 27, is five years younger than the 32-year-old Herremans.

Mariota is not coming here and Foles is running the show. There are too many holes to fill for that kind of a move. We’ll be fine. Losing Maclin for a bigger receiver does not make sense to me though. He’s a very productive receiver, and now we need to replace him with either lesser talent or a high draft pick. I think it is a culture thing. Chip does not want people dictating to him. Maclin was pushing and Chip pushed back. It was a power thing. Anyhow, time to move on and see where this goes. No panicking here either way.

That would be the smart thing to do Chunky, but with Chip, I just don’t know man.

I feel trading down throughout the draft, and making some trades including Curry, Boykins, Mathis, Barwin, and Cooper, should be the plan to get more picks – not give up picks for a guy who won’t be even an average pro.

Every move he’s made suggests Mariota is who they are targeting. Reports are clear they have a deal in place with the Jets if he falls to 6.

The only question is can they offer enough to move higher (Tampa/Titans) to get him if one of those teams want him. Though Tampa would be a damn fool not to take Winston first.

G Orlando Franklin is going to the Charges. I see the Eagles targeting G Lupati and S Rahim Moore now that McCourty is staying with the Pats. right or wrong– chip Kelly values players by a totally different barometer than us– in his ‘genius’ mind he sees cooper as a pulling tackle that can catch 50 passes– he sees desean and lesean as guys that need to get the ball a bunch of times a game and want to be the focal point– again I’m not necessarily agreeing with it but really this guy sees it so much differently than we do–
so as fans we can scratch our heads and argue all we want but….

Sanchez will make 9 mill in two seasons, 5.5 guaranteed, if Foles is still here, with Sanchez’s contract he will have an opportunity to compete for the starting job, the money says that…so I disagree with you on Sanchez not being a threat to Foles.

When things are reported about contracts they aren’t from a “fan perspective” they are from legit reporters – just as with this blog, or bleeding green nation or iggles blitz or what have you – so no a “fan” wasn’t reporting about the contract numbers.

So Arrowhead or Bleeding Green or whoever says “reporter so in so says xyz” or a KC Chiefs source we spoke to says “xyz” NOT I’m a fan and I think this is what it is.

I sees Kenny Britt, Brian Hartline, maybe even an Andre Johnson when he gets released or a Reggie Wayne who all could be signed and help the Eagles Offense … Percy Harvin will be released soon from the Jets also
Then add a WR in the Draft (Tre McBride in the 2nd Round)

WR’s in Chip’s Offense are a Dime a Dozen but they must be able to Block

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jeremy Maclin’s contract with the Chiefs will pay him in the vicinity of $11 million per year.
We can now understand why Chip Kelly let Maclin get away. While Maclin is a very nice receiver, paying him more than guys like Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Antonio Brown is a monstrous stretch. It’s also a stretch to think Alex Smith could make a wide receiver worth paying $11 million. The Eagles were reportedly offering Maclin $9 million per year.

OLB/DE
RG

They’ve added a fossil at RB

They resigned Marc “Every Eagle fan knows I absolutely suck” Sanchez

Have I got this right?

cb, safety will come.

we dont need an olb b/c we have barwin, kiko, ryans, and kendricks. essentially kendricks could go outside or kiko… but the olb will come. plus we have depth there with acho and smith

rg will come
wr will not come – draft maybe

cox isnt going anywhere in a trade unless we see a dl signing by weeks end. getting rid of foles doesnt create an opening if we get marriota, kendricks is replaceable

but you are on to something with how much we do still need… as each hour goes by it is becoming obvious we are not getting marriota, we didnt fill enough holes in free agency to make the move – we arent done but the way its looking it looks to me as chip is choosing foles

Cornerback? Took Williams 8 million added a few to it and for the best corner on the market, I’ll take that too!

Maclin Move does not upset me if We keep Foles and Draft a WR and OL in round 1 or 2 that can play.

I do think a FA CB and S are still to sign

Maclin move should upset you dearly if the plan is to keep Foles.

No–> Better Value in the Draft with high Picks for a WR or 2 than paying Maclin.
