The “Official” Start To Free Agency

ChipKelly3The clock is ticking until the 4pm official start time for NFL free agency. The Eagles have secured cornerback Maxwell by overspending, and retained two of their own in Graham and Sanchez. Gore, is he or he is not an Eagle? I would get his rationale for cold feet; a few Eagle fans are getting that syndrome with how Chip has approached the off season.

What exactly is the plan with this football team? Somehow the Eagles not just in Philadelphia but from a national perspective have become the team that everyone is watching. “Trust in Chip,” has everyone wondering what he is going to do next.

The actual free agency period has yet to start, but with the “tampering” period we have a good sense of what players are still left for the Eagles to add. The biggest concern has to be the talent left at the wide receiver position. The current list could see the additions of veterans such as Bowe and Mike Wallace, but as it stands the biggest name to add would be Michael Crabtree. I can’t see Harvin or Andre Johnson coming to Philadelphia, I like the Colts to sign Johnson and Chip would be an absolute hypocrite to sign Harvin with all of his character issues. Crabtree is not Maclin, and even with the Eagles current wide receiver depth, other teams have it worse, and will be even more desperate to overpay for Crabtree.

Who are the players you want coming to Philadelphia? Running back, wide receiver, cornerback, safety, offensive guard; yes the Eagles have a good bit of salary cap to use up, but a ton of positions they need to fill.

Is free agency even the biggest part of the offseason? No matter the names we sign and who signs elsewhere, the conversation that will still be left unanswered is the potential blockbuster trade to move up and draft Marcus Mariota.

Sign another CB (?) and S (Gilcrest) over the next few days and the defense is done going into the draft. It would be nice to sign a vet WR. In the draft you can find a RG, WR and RB – even if Chip moves up for Mariota. (A combination of #1 picks + Foles + Kendricks could get that done). There will be a number of really good RBs and WRs to be found in rounds 3&4.

The Titans will put Oregon QB Marcus Mariota through a private workout following his pro day, according to Alex Marvez.
We expect representatives from every single team to attend Oregon’s pro day, not just for Mariota but also for Jake Fisher, Arik Armstead and others. There is a lot of talk of where Mariota could land once the passing the top two picks, but we think there is a strong possibility the Bucs or Titans select a quarterback. Ken Whisenhunt does not have a vast history of investing in young quarterbacks, however.

Why hasn’t he established that Nick Foles is the unquestioned starter and Sanchez is the backup.

The money paid to Sanchez suggests that if Foles happens to stay he is going to be in competition for the starting job.

Backups dont normally get 2year $16million dollar contracts with 5.5 million guaranteed.

He’s not going to be in competition with Foles, because Foles isn’t going to be on the team.

So if he’s going to be in competition with anyone its going to be with Mariotta.

And that’s where your idiotic argument about him being paid “starter” $$ falls flat. Because Mariotta will start play one of the first game after the Eagles shred the next 5 years of their franchise trading for him.

Mark Sanchez is being paid average backup QB money you dimtwit.

And he’s lucky to be getting average backup money, because he is a below average backup.

And how you keep saying 16 when the contract is for 9 is most amusing.

Are you really that obstinate, or are you like Jon Hart….though instead of living in the land of imaginary sources, you like in the land of imaginary numbers?

vinnietheevictor

Let me put it more simply.

If Mariotta is here, Sanchez is the backup.

If Foles is here, Sanchez is the backup.

Sanchez just signed for average backup money.

9 is not 16 no matter how much you wish it to be.

koolbreeze

The only thing that’s simple Vinnie is you…

If Mariota is here, Sanchez will start until he is ready to take over…unless he proves in camp that he can step right in..

If Foles is here with no new extension, Sanchez starts and Foles is a back up

Backups dont sign 2 year- 16million dollar contracts with 5.5 guaranteed with teams that have established, franchise QB

Backups aren’t signed to deals that pay more than the Franchise QB…

Until the Eagles get their QB situation straight..and let’s face it.. it’s not a situation that either guy will lead the team to a deep playoff run, or a playoff win for that matter… so neither guy exudes much confidence from offensive skill player free agents. Offensive talent is going to hem and haw coming here because neither Nick nor Sanchez is a franchise QB. No playoff wins in the for seeable future with either guy.

Injuries and turnovers will never get a QB the title of franchise player.

as i’ve explained numerous times- chip does not, in my opinion, believe in calling a receiver number 1,2,3,4 or whatever– he doesn’t want A player who by ‘rule’ has to be fed the ball X number of times per game- shady and jax were those types- not sure that mac was but at 11$ he should be.
I’m not saying i agree with the concept but chip, by action has said that.

I have never heard Chip say anything about not calling receivers 1,2 or 3…honestly, nor do I care about what Chip calls them..X, Y, Z or slot..I don’t care. There are clearly starting receivers on the outside and in the slot, the coverage the receivers command from the d backs dictate their order of priority. Chip may not care about the # of touches a receiver or rb will get, but a young skill player will as it will dictate their production and possible earnings on a future contract. Chip still has some college in him, everything he wants to do in the NFL is not going to fly.

Sources tell FOX Sports Frank Gore pulled out of his deal with the Eagles in part because he was more intrigued by the chance to play in the Colts’ offense.
Gore is expected to get slightly more money when he signs with Indy later Tuesday, but reportedly had concerns about an Eagles offense with question marks at both quarterback and wide receiver (after losing Jeremy Maclin). A source also said Gore also indicated to a friend he was concerned with what he heard about Chip Kelly’s overbearing approach in Philly. Gore leaving Philly appears to have also cost them Andre Johnson, as the ex-Texan is now reportedly on his way to Indy as well.

There appears to be a lot of chatter about Kelly and how he deals with players. Some will be fine with kelly’s approach..some ..not so much. Kelly needs to learn to adjust, you can’t treat grown men like they are college kids.

It doesn’t surprise me that Gore and Maclin both bailed (for sure) right after Sanchez signed as the backup to Mariotta.

What FA WR or RB of note wants to play behind a Rookie QB/Marc Sanchez combo??

Maclin bailing tells me he knows Foles is gone as the two of them lit it up together while Maclin’s numbers plummeted with Sanchez. They’ll also plummet with Mariotta throwing him 10 screens a game….not to mention the pounding he’ll take. The $$ didn’t hurt.

Gore has 2 years left in his career and doesn’t want to spend it running behind another “developing” QB who won’t be hitting his NFL stride until Gore retires.

So Mac left Philly, a system he flourished in, to play with that bum Alex Smith…lol..ok. Mac left because of $ and possibly because he felt he was not made a priority in FA $ wise. may have been tired of the culture and having to be monitored during sleep, going to bed at 10 pm..what 27 year old man feels like dealing with all that? Chip monitors the players diet, Chip needs to monitor and modify his..lead by example Barney!
Oh and trust, Nick Foles is not exactly drawing players here either..do not leave him out of the mix.

I don’t know, you would have to ask him that, however, he was discussing how some players on the team felt after that situation. I will not just dismiss what he says as sour grapes or whatever, that is the stick your head in the sand approach (nothing to see here) I personally think Chip has room to grow and show improvement with how he deals with certain situations and talent. he is far from perfect in that area.

Um..no. Way to trivalize how so many people feel about. Particularly when 3/4 of so many teams are black.

Look perception is often reality – and when you keep Cooper and release Jax, Mac (you know what I mean) and LeSean – it doesn’t look good – even if the REASONS aren’t aligned with what the perception is.

How serious is any of this in decision making is beyond me. But it seems to keep coming up.

Letting Maclin walk is understandable for the contract perspective, but not understandable considering the current WR personnel. still early so possibly they make a splash with a WR signing in FA…? Maclin gone now the WR Corps is 2 2nd Year WR’s (Matthews & Huff) and Riley Cooper & Jeff Maehl to become the worst WR Corp in the NFL, let me repeat this, the Eagles Currently have the worst WR Corps in the Entire NFL with a ? at QB at who will be Passing the Ball

Paul – Its the NFL, no one gets good returns for skill position players with high price tags. The fact that they got an possible up and coming star for McCoy is awesome.

Regarding Maxwell – We had no choice. We desperately needed so solidify at least one CB position to go against Dez, ODB and djac. The reasons we give ourselves all of that cap flexibility is to overpay for a position of need when the time is right (much like the Patriots – see Revis).

Sanchez – Meh

I do agree that the WR corp is terrible. Something needs to be done there at some point.

I think people are over reacting to some of the moves that have been made thus far. Overall the plan has been pretty solid. Address the defense. The defense had five holes. By trading Shady and adding an ILB you filled one and upgraded the position. Graham is also a definite upgrade over Cole who has been an average pass rusher for four years now. Maxwell is an upgrade at corner. Personally I think the other corner spot is lowest priority. Carroll was a decent player in Miami who had a great camp and then got lost in the shuffle last year. I am fine with him as the other starter. And the idea that we would sign Maclin and add another WR in FA or high in the draft was far fetched. What we do need to address is safety and RB more than anything else. I would like to upgrade RG which was my whole argument for getting rid of Heremans for a couple years. I am even ok if Chip wants to go for Mariota. The issue then becomes supporting cast. You cannot fail to address RG, RB or WR with a good player in FA. And I also don’t think you should make any deal that gives away your second round pick. You need a starter with that pick or you are really expecting a miracle to find a starter late in the third round or beyond.

jbird
jbird
March 10, 2015 2:49 pm

Suppose the remainder of our moves were to stick with Carroll as starting CB, sign Forsett and Rahim Moore, trade for Mariota and draft Jake Fisher in the second round for your RG. Of course there would be the Oreagle comments but would people be happy with the off season? That means Mathews and Huff better step up and Ertz better be starting.

The Philadelphia Inquirer calls Patriots CB Brandon Browner a cornerback “to watch for the Eagles.”
The Eagles need a bookend for Byron Maxwell after severing ties with Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher. Philadelphia’s pass-defense scheme is similar to Seattle’s, where Browner developed into a solid starter following a CFL stint. NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported Tuesday that Browner will not take a pay cut to stay in New England. Thus, he may become a free agent soon.

We need some killers on this squad

If he can get away from NE, sign Browner 6’4 physical beast, will punch a guy in the mouth. Played very well for NE
