Thoughts On Nick Foles/Sam Bradford Trade

ChipKellyandNickFoles1Chip Kelly The GM Is Clueless

Do you hear that?

Somewhere on the “business side” of the Novacare Complex, Howie Roseman must be laughing himself to sleep.

And why is Howie laughing? Because the moves that Chip Kelly has made so far have been absolute jokes. And none have been worse than the one that occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

Everyone that follows the team got the sense that Kelly wasn’t a fan of Nick Foles, and that it seemed very likely that he would be moved at some point this off-season even though the former third-round pick had shown some promise in his young career.

Kelly showed with this deal that he has no idea how to properly assess a player’s value in this league. For a young quarterback that accomplished what Foles had done, the Eagles could have gotten a much larger return. Chip doesn’t seem to understand that just because he didn’t put a high value on Foles doesn’t mean that other teams wouldn’t.

This is a league where everybody is desperate for quarterback help. Teams will reach on prospects from Tim Tebow to Johnny Manziel in the first round, and clubs will pay second-round picks for the likes of A.J. Feeley and Kevin Kolb if they flash even a little potential.

And here we have Foles, who may not have been a “fit” for his majesty’s offensive system, but still had compiled some very impressive statistics and results during his three-year career. At the minimum, he could have fetched the same return that Feeley and Kolb brought in years past. Ideally, he should have been used to help strengthen the team’s assets in the draft.

However, I’m afraid that our dear, all-powerful leader not only failed to acquire any significant draft assets for Foles, but instead managed to GIVE AWAY a second-rounder in the process.

And all of this so the Eagles could pick up Sam Bradford? The same Sam Bradford that Rams may have been on the verge of releasing? No team in this league would have given a second-rounder for Bradford.

That’s a complete and utter failure on the part of Chip Kelly. His lack of experience is running this team into the ground.

The St. Louis Rams straight up fleeced Kelly and the Eagles in this deal, hands down. They virtually picked up Foles, a second-rounder, and a fourth-rounder for nothing.

And you can bet the Rams’ front office is laughing just as hard as Howie.

Chip Kelly The Coach Is Clueless

And so what did Chip Kelly throw away a promising young quarterback, a future second-round pick, and a fourth-round pick to acquire?

Sam Bradford has shown some significant promise at times, but he’s been killing the Rams for years because of his inability to stay healthy.

If you thought Michael Vick and Nick Foles had trouble staying healthy over the last few years, they look like iron men compared to Bradford.

Bradford has made it through 16 games only twice in his career. He hasn’t played a down in almost two years after suffering back-to-back ACL tears. He also had significant questions about his shoulder coming out of college.

And now the plan is to put him front and center in an offense that relies on the read-option, constantly putting the quarterback in harm’s way? Yeah, sounds like a fool-proof plan to me.

Good lord, we may as well brace ourselves for Mark Sanchez being the quarterback for the majority of this year again. There’s absolutely no way that a guy like Bradford stays healthy in this offense.

Is There A Larger Move Coming?

Listening to everyone and their brother try to make sense of this garbage, one of the most popular theories is that the Eagles acquired Bradford so that they could flip him as part of a larger trade to another team to help the Eagles pick up Marcus Mariota.

I don’t see it.

I look at Sam Bradford, and I don’t see how he could be that appealing to the other quarterback-needy franchises. And if he were that appealing, why wouldn’t any of those other teams have just gone out and made a deal with the Rams themselves?

I think the Eagles actually plan on building around Bradford, as insane as that sounds. They parted with a good young quarterback and a second round pick, and a fourth rounder to bring this guy to Philadelphia. That’s a very high price to pay for a guy who would supposedly never see the field for this franchise.

We also need to consider that the Eagles have too many holes to fill, and an “all-in” deal for Mariota may no longer be feasible at this point. With the Birds unexpectedly losing Jeremy Maclin, and also missing out on Frank Gore, and failing to lure in Devin McCourtey, this team still has a ton of holes to fill.

The self-inflicted wounds the team has had to endure to satisfy Kelly’s brilliant vision have created dire needs for help at the wide receiver and running back positions. The talent on the offensive line needs to be replenished. They still need another cornerback. And the eternal quest to upgrade Nate Allen at the safety position opposite Malcolm Jenkins continues as well.

That’s a lot of holes to fill, and free agency can’t take care of all of them. They need their draft picks to properly address their needs. Sending away high picks from this year, 2016 (which is already down a second-rounder, thanks Chip), and 2017 is only a recipe to put this team in an even larger hole.

Reports indicate that Kelly wanted Bradford, and he went after him pretty hard.

Like it or not, it looks like Sam is here to stay.

Final Thoughts

This off-season has been such a mess, and I really fear for the future of this organization.

When you look at the body of work, the Eagles seem to have taken one step forward through the addition of Byron Maxwell and about three steps back through the losses of LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin, and now Foles.

Day to day, this team seems to be getting worse, not better. We’ve quickly gone from having great promise for 2015 to dreading the worst.

The more I think about it, I really can’t blame Jeremy Maclin for going to Kansas City and getting out of this situation. And it’s no wonder to me that Frank Gore had second thoughts about coming here.

I’ve seen this franchise make all kinds of questionable signings, decisions, and trades over the years. And there have been some pretty low moments for this franchise in just the last five years alone.

I think about all of those terrible moves, everything from taking Brandon Graham over Earl Thomas to selecting Danny Watkins in the first round, to starting Casey Matthews at middle linebacker in his rookie year, to the release of DeSean Jackson last year, and none of those moves have been more baffling than what’s been going on over the last two weeks.

If there’s a silver lining to all of this nonsense, if Kelly really plans to try to build around Bradford, at the very least maybe the Eagles can escape the genius mortgaging everything to go up and get his system quarterback and if things really do go south than the franchise at least won’t be in a hole for years with a lack of top picks.

The same can be said for the stiff and slow Nick Foles…his inability to make quick decisions, holding the ball, indecisive, throwing off of his back foot..his slow reactions make his getting hurt again very likely….
With Bradford or Foles you are taking a chance …with Bradford you are taking a chance with a QB with much more talent and smarts….its a good bet that Foles wont make it through a season

Just as importantly the offensive line is suspect without taking into consideration potential major injuries as Nick Foles dislocated shoulder should have adequately proven. Additionally it seems like the Eagles may pick up DeMarco Murray, a guy that if I remember correctly has been injury the last two years.

there is a reason a guy is a #1 pick – he is on a shitty team – Steve Young didn;t light the world on fire in Tampa Bay – give him an Oline and a running game – and see what Bradford can do – but why argue about it now – it looks like a few more moves are coming up

Your worst article ever Denny…stop it with Nick Foles!

No one was giving up anything of value for Foles…he didn’t carry much value in the league after leading the NFL in turnovers.

Once Chip Kelly decided that Foles was not the long term answer for the Eagles at QB..he decided to get the most he could for an oft-injured, mediocre QB…

The most Foles was going to get you was a 5th round pick!

With this in mind, Chip took a chance…he secured Sanchez as a backup, made the move a grabbed Bradford…and now he probably will grab a young QB in the Draft and it doesn’t have to be Mariota.

Now Bradford with a much better Oline, a running game, an offensive mastermind in Kelly may be able to do a lot more with the offense than the slow-minded, overwhelmed, Nick Foles!

Good move!

Go Eagles!!

Losing Foles and Maclin just bums me out. If we don’t somehow get Mariota through this..I just don’t know what to say. Saying we’ve gone backwards is just too obvious regardless of whatever culture he is trying to build. Losing Shady makes a little sense, but not these other 2. I like Walter Thurmond … Played on Seattle a couple years back,
Maxwell replaced Thurmond at Seattle for the most part..
Thurmond never really caught on with the Giants and then was injured and only played 2 Games in 2014 and saw mostly Nickel Duty
He’s a Good Player, Plays Special Teams also and can play Outside CB or in the Slot … Has had Injury Issues throughout his 6 Years in the NFL and Played 12 Games in 2013 which was his best season , Only 2 Games in 2012, 6 Games in 2011 and 14 Games in 2010
Thurmond also Played at University of Oregon..

I try to always look at this stuff with a calm rational–however last night I wanted to go all caps and put in a bunch of @$%$&–
Came to this: chip doesn’t want to have andy’s guys even though he was 20-12 with them–for whatever reason in his mind they are flawed- Andy loved maclin, McCoy and foles- tolerated and I think actually got a chuckle out of desean- all gone, AR liked Vick, gone– in fairness andy was 4-12 with those guys so it seems justified-
But– all this talk about chip getting his guy at qb and all along it was Bradford? For the record, signed sanchez twice, drafted barkley and traded for a guy with no knees– so much for ‘implementing his entire offense’
But know this… the chip guys who wanted foles gone etc but criticized djax move have to understand this is what you wanted– the moves are all part of the same plan– oh and without playoff wins this year it is a failure–

I wanted Foles gone if it meant Mariota b/c that made sense.

But hell we had a cheap mediocre, injury prone QB – we didn’t have to go trade for another. Particularly when there are no skills positions player to make his mediocre play seem less mediocre.

But……

Does anyone other than the 3 amigos actually believe that Sam Bradford is $13 million, a 2nd and a 4th better than Nick Foles?

Only a complete idiot believe that.

And Chip Kelly is quickly spiraling into Koolidiot territory.

Every dexision he’s made vis-a-vis Qbs has been wrong.

Starting Vick – wrong
drafting Barkley – wrong
signing Sanchez – wrong
re-signing Sanchez after watching him last year – ridiculously wrong
thinking Bradford is $12 mil, a 2nd and a 4th better than Foles – inexcusably wrong.

I mean his decisions are getting worse as he goes along!

Kool, honestly, I get you dont like Foles, some of which is because you just don’t like his skill set, but mostly because many Foles lovers on this blog hated Vick and that fact still scars you. But being an Eagles fan, as I assume we all are despite differences of opinion, you can’t possibly look at the Foles trade and be happy. Listen, I wanted them to keep Foles and build a dominant defense and to a degree, he is building a dominant defense. I had prepared myself that Foles was going to be traded, because Chip had to have his guy in MM and he (Foles) was an asset to be used to get him. When I heard initially Foles/20 for Bradford/10, I thought OK, makes sense, one step closer to MM. Than to see how Chip got his pants pulled down in giving up a player asset (Foles), draft pick assets (2nd next year), and no 10th this year! A true Eagles fan cannot see this as anything but a disaster. Whether you like pocket passers – Foles is as good or better than Bradford (and cheaper) or running QB- Bradford can’t run and his legs are shot, we all lost. TS summed it up perfectly above. This is a 5-6 win team that we’ll have to watch Sanchez throwing 5-15 yd grenades by week 2. Please stop trying to justify this horrible move because you hate Foles, or more importantly, those who liked him.

Everz11, lets be totally honest..stop with the psuedo-psycho analysis…the Foles lovers have attacked me because of my defense of Mike Vick when he beat Foles for the job they were hurt…when Foles became the QB I never called for Vick to return to the job, when Vick was let go…I never argued that he should stay on the team…
The bottom line that you and the Foles fans just cant bring yourselves to admit…is simple…I was right. I was right about Foles, I told you that he was a flash in the pan, another Kevin Kolb. I told you that he was not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning…

I was right…

Chip has made an excellent move..he’s taking a low risk gamble that brings in a substantial talent in Bradford. Its clear according to Kelly’s evaluation that Bradford is a superior QB to Foles…Bradford will be able to run at the QB position just as good as Maclin runs at the wide receiver…they both have had 2 ACL injuries…
Foles cant run and his legs are good…he is mentally slow, inaccurate, indecisive, and Chip Kelly sees what the rest ot the NFL sees…a subpar QB who we couldnt’ get more than a 5th rounder for as a QB.
Stop pretending that we lost something when we haven’t…we dont give up a 2nd next year if Bradford is healthy…if he is healthy he will play much better than Nick Foles..
Stop hating on the move because you hate that I was right about Nick Foles…just accept the facts…I was right about Nick Foles and you and the Foles lovers were wrong
Its that simple

There are too many Foles Slurpers hypocritically upset about what we gave up in the trade for Bradford. Last year you didn’t give a shit that he just cut outright a Pro Bowl receiver, getting no compensation, nothing for a player in his prime and under contract, with very little guaranteed money left on his deal. All I heard was glee, and that you had full confidence in this bullshit ‘culture’ Kelly was building. All he had to was trade a mediocre qb you people elevated to hero status, who would be thought of as nothing without Kelly’s scheme providing easy completions that goose the qbs raw counting stats. One year in the scheme, opponents took the easy shit away, and Foles’s numbers completely fell in the toilet when he’s required to make throws downfield on a consistent basis.

Losing Foles Gold was the least important part of this deal. It was giving up draft picks and paying 13 mil for an oft-injured qb, even if they felt he was better than Foles. Kelly continues to prove that he has no concept of getting value for his players or asset management, which is why he couldn’t stand Roseman, cuz he was the guy in his ear trying to keep him from selling the store. Which is why those who wanted Roseman gone shouldn’t complain either.

Don’t know why Kelly wouldn’t protect himself in any way from the injury risk other than to recoup the 2nd rd pick he needlessly put in this deal, but if by some small chance his sports science keeps Bradford on the field, he will be better than Foles Gold in this offense, and Foles will be revealed to be the fool’s gold that any qb that’s let go by Kelly should be regarded as. He doesn’t know shit about being a GM, but he does know offense and the qb position.

Wrong as usual twit.

Eagles giving up the 4 (2015) and the 2 (2016) are guaranteed. Done. Finished.

STL has those 2 picks.

If Bradford doesn’t play in 50% of the games the Eagles get a 5th back (2016) If he gets hurt the Eagles get a 3 back. If he plays more than 8 the Eagles get nothing.

You keep saying the Eagles are not on the hook for the 2, when its gone. Done. Finito. Traded.

You keep saying this because you either:

A – enjoy lying
B – cannot read.

Since you didn’t get the $2 raise from Walmart I’m assuming B

Hey…for all you Nick Foles lovers…Vinniedaloser, haveablunt…your man Foles is happy to be out of town…

He’s happy to be out of Philly: on csnphilly Foles family says

“Family member: Nick Foles ‘overjoyed’ to be out of Philly”

Here’s something you probably didn’t expect to hear come from the camp of a player as diplomatic as Nick Foles.

“I just talked to a member of Nick Foles’ family. He is absolutely pumped, overjoyed he’s out of Philly,” ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio said Wednesday on 97.5 The Fanatic, via ProFootballTalk.

If true, what might be the source of Foles’ excitement to leave the Eagles? Could be the constant looking over the shoulder. Could be all the speculation that the Eagles need a QB with different skills. Could be the fact that Foles, a guy who really just seems interested in playing football and not pursuing all the glamour of being an NFL quarterback, has become such a polarizing figure around these parts.

In any event, Foles is a St. Louis Ram, and it’s hard to imagine him having less success than any of the Rams’ recent QBs. That alone should endear him more in the midwest than he ever truly was in Philadelphia.”

Or could it be that Nick Foles just wasn’t mentally tough enough to handle being in Philadelphia…the pressure was too much for the kid…so just like in that infamous Cowboy game where he choked up…or that brutal SF game where he folded…the pressure was much too much for Nick..

Finished…its over…The Nick Foles Era has ended..

Again, Learn to read twit.

“I just talked to a member of Nick Foles’ family. He is absolutely pumped, overjoyed he’s out of Philly,”

The member of Foles family (first “he”) is pumped Foles (second he) is out of Philly.

Its how the whole pronoun/antecedent thing works dimtwit.

I know. English is hard. Obviously, math too. 9 million = 16 million and all that.

English is obviously difficult for Koolbreeze, Math too.

LOL…Lame ass loser

I know, I know…It hurts you bad bro!!!

That ass is stinging…LMAO

He gone Vinniedaloser…they got rid of Nick Foles!

Remember when you said:

“One thing I do know is this….Chip Kelly knows exactly who came in and saved his ass in 2013.”

So that led you to conclude:

“1 – Barring a trade (and that isn’t going to happen) Foles is on the Eagles’ roster next year no matter what. He’ probably the starter”

Remember your words Vinnie…LOL…”Foles is on the Eagles roster next year NO MATTER WHAT…LMAO…

Nick Foles cant fully run Chip’s offense

He’s too slow mentally and physically

he’s a turnover machine

Then remember what I told you here Vinnie

Remember back in November, Vinnie when I said:

What do you honestly expect Kelly to say…”Yeah we were considering benching him he was stinking up the games. He sucks”
Foles is done! He’s out! The reports about Foles long-term future are accurate and make a lot of sense. His play does not warranted a long-term contract

Well Vinnie…check the archives its all there…I was right…and you were dead wrong…

Foles is done..its over…and your worst nightmare has become a reality…

I am an Eagles fan, and as an Eagles fan one does not have to be a Chip Kelly fan or agree with every move the team, organization, or Chip makes. The Eagles existed before Jeff, Howie and most certainly Chip Kelly, and when all three of them are long gone, the Eagles will still exist and I will still be rooting for them.

In my estimation, Kelly’s attempt to rebuild this team in a microwave fashion with FA mercenaries is not a formula for winning (see 2011 Dream Team and many other teams attempts to do the same thing). It is a flawed formula for coaches that are in a desperate to win now mode. If Kelly was here for the long haul, he would demonstrate patience and build through the draft. In my opinion thistearing down the team and attempt to rebuild through FA is a disaster in the making, I do not know or recognize this team anymore. Great job Jeff Lurie..perhaps it’s time for you to consider selling the team. Chip is overmatched as a GM, and Jeff, you have lost your way as an owner that understands how to build a championship team. Sell the team!
Will I watch and root for the Philadelphia Eagles this year..of course because at the end of the day it’s about the uniform, not the bodies inside of it, but it will not be as natural to me. This is not about a certain player or players, this is about the decisions that has been made personnel wise as well as how the organization has conducted itself with a smug with a bunker like mentality..something Jeff Lurie said he would change while Andy Reid was here…but it is back…on steroids. Normally I get excited about the FA period, draft, and upcoming season, not so much now.

Frustrated Eagles Fan,

Too Funny! the dream team is a decent comparison but you do know EHL that most on Gcobb want to win the off season– I have said all along, particularly last year that signing the sexiest names means nothing and usually hurts the team in the long run-
however what I do like about chips ego is that he seems to be saying that yes some of the jettisoned big name players were good, they were 4-12 when I got here– even with those big shots…my ego says ‘look I took 4-12 players, coached them up and won some with them…but wait till you see what I can do with my type of player’–

as for building thru the draft– according to the ego yesterday he was not too happy with the draft and wrestled it away from the bean counter– he also said he wasn’t going to mortgage the future because draft picks were so important–
oh and what was it you said about him getting mariotta EHL?

HAC, mortgaging the future is BS, you can still build through the draft in rounds 3-5, that is where depth and a good majority of players on NFL rosters come from, superstars…bluechip players are seen as 1st round players. If a team knows how to draft it’s not to difficult to accomplish. FA is used to fill in for depth and perhaps a key position on defense or offense at a specific position.
To me, pursuing MM would have been an indication that Kelly was looking for a long term relationship as the Eagles coach, not a quick fix that I believe is destined to not meet the expectations of this city or the eagle loyal fans.
Oh, and wasn’t it you who adamantly stated Nick Foles was Chip’s Tom Brady, and that Chip liked Nick, and that Chip was not saying anything positive about Nick because he did not want to up his price during contract talks…LMAO at you. Wasn’t it also you who said at this time you can’t believe what coaches say…coach speak you called it….I guess that’s the case unless what the coach says fits your agenda..LOL. What made you think Chip Kelly liked Nick Foles at all, not his actions, after all, you said judge him by his actions, not his words, well his action of shipping Nick off spoke volumes…didn’t it? You can’t even read your own tea leaves…Nick is Chip’s Tom brady..stop smoking those tea leaves!!!
Oh, I have a lot of your Chip wants and Likes Nick post, so we can go all day. As far as Mariota, we still do not know for sure yet, we will let the action speak.
Your turn!!! 🙂
If Mariota is around at 20 and Chip does not take him, you will be proven right and I will have lost the bet, but, Mariota will not be around at twenty…I am an intelligent gambler..

yes I stated that about foles- I was wrong it is Bradford-
my biggest point in the foles argument is that chip doesn’t need mr. mobility as a qb- that it is a myth that keeps getting perpetuated on this blog– on that I am 100% correct–
no I do believe a lot of it is coaches speak–
what I do believe in is action and the eagles as an organization would not put Bradford jerseys on the website 12 hours after the trade and then trade him again… I could be wrong but that is an ACTION–
so if you think you are playing gottcha– you are wrong–
as for the draft, we agree there are a lot of good 3-5 round players and you are also correct that is great for depth and ST– however I think they need a blue chipper or two-

Not interested in playing gotcha, I have posted my opinions, which can not be right or wrong, they are just my opinions. Whether my opinions come to fruition or materialize remains to be seen, except for my opinion about Foles, that one has manifested, wasn’t to hard to see that one as long as no emotion was used in the thought process.

again- i’ve stated before i am not in love with foles- i said based on the way chip runs the offense that my opinion is foles is fine- and that started with the types that say a qb needs legs- again my contention, no it doesn’t and by extension and results kelly was fine with foles. i was wrong about that but not wrong that you don’t need legs…
i am very unemotional about players and player money and contracts.
i contended all along that they weren’t in for mariotta, i still contend that–the ACTIONS of the last couple of day seem to indicate that they are not in for him- also by going to bradford it shows a qb doesn’t need mobility- bradford apparently is very accurate and smart
the main things he looks for in qb.

If the price is to steep, perhaps they will not be, my point is that if available or if he could get Mariota he would take him..you said Kelly would not even if he was available. We may never get the chance to find out either way. What I do know is that Kelly did not like Foles, I told you that, and you denied it. Do not try to cover it up with you not liking Foles, you have adamantly defended Foles on here..stating that you felt he was Kelly’s Tom Brady…sounds like romanticizing and love to me.
When Bradford gets an extension that will seal the deal, as far as his jersey, his number has not been issued so all sales of jerseys are open to refunds and exchanges because they can not even print up the jerseys yet. I am fine with Bradford, it’s Kelly’s hide on the line not mine. I was thinking Kelly wanted to start to build something here fresh, I was wrong, he wants a bunch of FA’s who has had major season ending injuries. That is not a man looking to start fresh building his own team through the draft or stay long term, that tells me Kelly believes he is not long here, probably by his own accord…but none the less, not long term.
I know Kelly’s mission is to win now, I just disagree that the way he is doing it is not conducive to doing that….you can not treat FA like college recruiting…does not work!

I have been critical of Chip Kelly as anyone on here from the Day he was Hired
and most of these moves he’s made this Season I do not like… But I will give him the benefit of the doubt until the Free-Agency/Draft Time and even thru the Summer Time to see what happens as far as his Roster Management/GM Skills which at this time, he appears over-matched without a doubt..
But it is his Team and I expected a lot of “Out with the Old and In with the New” for that’s what most New Coach’s do… I truly believe making the Playoffs his 1st Season was not expected or anticipated and actually put his “Rebuilding Program” behind a Year.. Now that he’s in Year #3, he is really going all in to re-mold this Team in his Likeness for better or worse which we all will see unfold here in the next 1-2 Years…

if murray signs it kind of changes my view of eagles and what they did in free agency. think vinnie pointed this out last night. essentially if there is no mathews deal we traded mccoy for alonso, murray and assuming we dont give murray any more than 7.5/per we get 6.5 left in our pocket. ill take that shit

BUT get the fuck outta my face with this bradford and sanchez shit. That best not be who we rollign with this season.

Chip says he aint doing yota, but we have filled all holes besides guard and safety. arguably chip could be comfortable with tobin or Vandervelde at guard… which if thats true only leaves us with the need for a safety…
