Eagles Agree To 3-Year Contract With RB Ryan Mathews

RyanMathews1The Eagles have signed San Diego Chargers free agent running back Ryan Mathews to a three-year deal.  For a while there it seemed that maybe Mathews might get upstaged by DeMarco Murray and wind up leaving town with no contract.  Instead, the Eagles got the deal done with the veteran back.

Mathews, who has been a Pro Bowl back will likely be sharing the Birds backfield with Pro Bowl running backs DeMarco Murray and Darren Sproles.

Signing Matthews means the Birds are spending a lot of money on their backfield, so that’s probably going to mean the Birds will be saying good-bye to last year’s goalline specialist Chris Polk.

Clearly Chip wants to have depth at the running back position and he wants one-cut backs like Matthews and Murray.  Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy has a different running style and it’s not to the liking of Kelly.  Don’t get me wrong, McCoy is able to make tacklers miss better than Mathews or Murray, but he isn’t the down-hill runner that they are.

Mathews, who is 6 foot even and weighs about 220 pounds is a physical north/south running back.  He has the same pedigree that the Eagles have gone after with DeMarco Murray and Sam Bradford.  Mathews was the 12th pick in the draft in 2010.

In five years with the Chargers, he has rushed for 4,061 yards and 23 touchdowns, while averaging 4.4 yards per carry. In addition, he’s an effective pass receiver who has pulled in 146 receptions for 1,110 yards and one touchdown.

Now things are turning around. Very nice. I was terrified of Murray and his caries by himself, but this makes perfect sense.

What was McCoy?11 million

Instead they have Murray, Matthews and Alonzo for about 14?

Now that’s a good trade. Much better than the other one……..

QB Bradford is the QB moving forward..
I’m thinking if Maclin Signed to remain with Eagles then maybe the Bradford/Foles Deal doesn’t occur which means no DeMarco Murray either…
Kelly had Plan A, B,C going into Free-Agency
Kelly probably figures if I lose Maclin, then Foles is out and I’ll roll the dice with Bradford and stock up on RB’s

Excellent job…by Kelly…he did what he needed to do

Bradford is the QB moving forward

Sanchez the back up

Draft the best rookie QB available in the second or third round

Kelly wanted to get rid of Foles all along, and he is rolling the dice with Bradford. He is gambling that Bradford can stay healthy and if he does stay healthy he has grabbed the best available QB talent wise and in keeping Sanchez the level of QB play from last year has remained the same.
Kelly looked at the film from last year and decided that Sanchez’s play was just as good if not better than Foles…so getting rid of Foles was no great loss
Now heading into the draft with an improved defense we can focus on other areas of need O-Line, WR, Safety, and future QB!

@Kool. I agree with Vinnie and Essope. I think you’re viewing the Sanchez part backwards. They didn’t just get rid of Foles. They used Foles as a tradable commodity to get Bradford. The Eagles could not pick Bradford up by using Sanchez as a trade piece because he is not as valuable. If the Eagles tried it with Sanchez they would to trade away more picks. Sanchez was resigned as an insurance policy in case Bradford gets injured again, that’s all.

I’m thinking now that maybe the Eagles go WR with their 1st pick. We clearly do not have a true #1 WR, and I’m not sure the Eagles will find it in free agency. Crabtree would be my pick, but he’s not a burner. We need someone who can spread the field and take it to the house. If Mike Wallace becomes available, then maybe the Eagles make a move

Ok guys, after week one of a roller coaster week of FA here’s how it looks into Chips first week as GM
Lost. Gained
Foles. Bradford
Shady. Murrary
Maclin. Matthews
Herremans Alonso
N. Allen. Brad jones
Cole. Maxwell
Cary Williams Thurman
We all know what we still need, let’s forget that for now, how do you grade what he’s done so far, I give him high marks, I think he did really well so far, I see an upgrade in two positions (RB, secodary)

Following your list Andrew

QB Postion Bradford > Foles
RB Position Murray & Matthews > McCoy
CB Position Maxwell & Thurmond > Cary Williams & Fletcher
ILB Position Alonso & Jones > Ryans & Casey Matthews
OLB Graham < Trent Cole (though I do envision Kiko Alonso Playing some OLB)

Losing Jeremy Maclin leaves a Big Hole at WR
Losing Nate Allen leaves Need at Safety
Losing Herremans leaves a Need at RG

Eagles need to Sign a Veteran WR and then Draft 1-2 WR's
Eagles could use a Veteran Safety
Eagles need to Draft 2 OL this Draft ( 1 Early and 1 Mid Rounds)
Eagles need to Draft 1 DB to Groom at CB/Safety Spots (Q Rollins, E Rowe)
Eagles need to Draft 1 DL for Depth

Every QB has had Success in Kelly’s Scheme (Vick,FOles and Sanchez) take Bradford’s Quick Release & Decision Making he should be more Productive and Cut Down on the Turnovers which has hurt the 3 Previous QB’ I listed

paul- the question i have is forget his health, forget foles bradford has NEVER won, he has never been in a BIG game in the nf, his completion percentage has not topped at 60–he was the number 1 pick- i don’t want to hear about his weapons– Luck game in and took a horrible team to the playoffs because he is a stud number 1 pick QB– I don’t want to hear about coaching turnover because the number 1 pick QB is supposed to save coaches jobs…. I like guys that win and so far he has not demonstrated having that ability…

Graham is better than Cole. Cole was always over rated and now he is old and has not been a PB player since 2010. Graham makes plays when on the field. Never got an opportunity to play more. I bet you Graham has 10+ sacks. We have a top five front seven if healthy. The deep middle is my biggest concern. There are no safeties in this draft. We better hope pass rush eliminates the long ball because that is still our biggest vulnerability with no real speed at the corners.

The defense is better but the offense has huge question marks. I don’t understand trading Mathis when we already have two holes on offense. Don’t sell Mathews short though. He is going to become a top #2 this year. The kid has talent and he works hard. And most important he finds the end zone. We need to stop acting like he is nothing. Ertz should make the leap this year too.

I can’t understand why everyone is stressing about this offense. Maclin, Desean and even Cooper’s bum ass had career years in this offense with shit at QB. What’s to stop Matthews, Huff and Ertz from beasting out? And with the 3-headed monster at RB, clearly they’re planning on running the ball 75% of the game. Herremans has fallen off the past couple years and guard is the easiest position to replace. I don’t agree with trading Mathis but if they can flip him for a decent player on defense, I’m all for it.

All this team needs is a good safety and this defense is straight nasty. Their front 7 last year was great and they got even better this off-season. And even if Byron and whoever fills in the CB2 slot have bad seasons it’s still better than the jokes they had last year.

If Chip’s plan is to wear out the defense with a power running game and build a defense that is young, energetic, talented and actually worth a damn, then I’m loving it. This team can be a legit super bowl contender even if Bradford doesn’t stay healthy. It seems to me as if Chip is building a team that doesn’t put so much pressure on the QB to win games.

We haven’t even had the draft yet and this team already looks 100x better than it did the last two years. Bradford is a big question mark, but if Foles can look decent in this offense, then I don’t see why Bradford can’t be a top 5 QB if he plays the whole season.

Now that we can actually throw out the Marriota nonesense, they can draft a stud WR, OL and Hundley as our future QB. I dunno about you guys but that sounds like a great plan to me.

They don’t. Probably a poor choice of wording on my part. But whether Kelly loves him or not, even he can’t deny there is a big risk involved in going with Bradford for the future. He has immense talent yes, but he is very prone to injury. Drafting a talented QB for insurance would help everybody sleep better at night.

Chip realized he wasn’t going to win any championships with Foles so he is taking a flyer on Bradford with no real long term commitments.

Jaelen strong ,works out here in the Scottsdale club ,I attend..he has been in contact with a few teams ..he’s a guy ,that seemingly replaces maclin ,probably runs a 4.4 at 6ft 4 and has huge wingspan ..he’s not dez ,nobody is ,but IMO he’s a guy that could fit very capably .At SS I believe they intend to move Carroll inside and trade Mathis,to the dolphins to get dion Jordan .Kelly must still restructure his O line and must restructure Demeco Ryan’s deal ..as well as sam I am …he’s waiting I’d assume to see what the draft day returns are .I also think he’s eyeing the running back position (believe it or not ) to get younger ,and the Boise state jay ayaji..he had 50 receptions for 536 yds..and rushed for 1823 yds and 28 tds..2nd rounder ..Pman and others your opinions?

I like Jaelen Strong Big Time and would love the Eagles to Select him in the 1st Round at #20, then go OL in the 2nd Round with Jake Fisher from Oregon or Guard Laken Tomlinson of Duke.
then go with WR Tre McBride of WiIlliam & Mary at 6-0 210lbs who is tough, can run, can contribute in the Return Game and a real sleeper in this Draft..

Moving Forward a Receiving Corps of Matthews, Strong, Huff & McBride could be awesome in 2 Years time… McBride is a bigger, stronger Maclin with great hands, route running ability but more aggressive and physical..

I’m very happy after initially feeling a tug at my heart strings ,losing guys I invested in as my guys..it’s a whole new NFL ,and I must admit the dervish speed of chips offense was only exceeded by this GM north south approach he took in reassembling this roster..nobody wins a damn thing on paper ,but today’s Super Bowl odds were just posted and for whatever it means we went from 20-1 to 16-1 ..I believe “if healthy” preceded most if not all of our picks when reviewing them all..every one has an asterisk. If his silence drinks ,are along with training the secret formula ,than pinnochipio ,may ,just get the Gatorade shower ..or ..he can find out that ACL on the same knee twice has no strikes left on it…a huge gamble ,a huge reach ..he knowingly has to protect this gamble and Mathis will be replaced ably in his estimation..another cause and effect for getting sam I am …the ball needs come out of his hand ,and he needs ample time to make his progressions..but I see a 65 /35 run to pass mixture ..with a defense not being pressed into action with a quick pace offense like the last two years ..this pinnochipio may just be on to something here

rotoworld eagles free agency grade

Incomplete — Eagles

If you can hear a piano fall, you can hear Chip Kelly coming down the hall. But for all the sound and the fury of the Eagles’ offseason, has there been any gain? Are DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews at $23 million guaranteed better than LeSean McCoy at his original 2015 salary of $9.75 million? Separated from the Legion of Boom, is Byron Maxwell really that much different than Cary Williams? Is Sam Bradford in any way, shape or form an improvement on Nick Foles? The Eagles are vastly different than they were a month ago. Aside from maybe Kelly, nobody knows if they’re actually any better.

The saga of whether accused stalker John Hart would represent himself at his trial or have an attorney represent him continued today in Common Pleas Court.

At what was supposed to be the start of his trial, Hart instead walked into court dressed in a black suit, holding a brown accordion file filled with documents, and told Judge Gwendolyn Bright: “As I sit here this morning, I feel I’m over my head and I feel I would like representation in this matter.”

Hart, 38, told the judge he wanted high-profile defense attorney Jack McMahon to represent him. McMahon, who was in court, said he was not ready to represent Hart today on the case.

Hart is accused of stalking, harassing and stealing the identity of CBS3 anchor Erika von Tiehl in the wake of a brief, ill-fated relationship in 2011.

After Hart was given a few opportunities to speak privately with McMahon, Hart told the judge he wanted to postpone his trial and was seeking to retain McMahon.

Bright, who was clearly frustrated by Hart, who has changed his mind various times over whether he wanted an attorney or wanted to represent himself, said she was “reluctantly” granting his motion to no longer represent himself at trial. She set a tentative trial date of Oct. 26.

Bright told Hart she will no longer consider any further motions from him to represent himself in his trial.

“Quite frankly, I think this is a manipulation on your part,” she said. “You are being very manipulative and very controlling.”

To that, Hart replied: “I find that very unfair.”

Bright responded: “I’m not playing this game.”

Hart answered: “I’m not playing any games.”

Throughout the hearing, Hart, acting as his own attorney, frequently objected to what the judge said.

At one point, Bright began to say that Hart had his case before other judges, but was interrupted when Hart butted in with: “I object to that.”

“You object to what?” Bright asked him, noting that he had a number of court appearances during which he appeared before judges trying to resolve who would represent him.

Hart also argued with Bright over rulings she made on a couple of motions, contending the decisions came late and affected his trial strategy.

“I am not going to quibble with you any further,” the judge told Hart.

The judge noted that the commonwealth was ready to proceed in the trial and that a jury panel with alternates was all ready to hear the case.

Assistant District Attorney Lauren Katona told the court that she objected to further delay of the trial. She contended Hart’s request for an attorney was “nothing more than an attempt to delay and to manipulate the system.”

She noted that witnesses were brought from out of state for the trial, which was initially expected to begin last week.

Bright said she will hold a separate hearing on whether Hart should be required to pay for the expenses incurred by the commonwealth in bringing in the out-of-state witnesses.

She asked Katona to have ready at a Feb. 4 status hearing the expenses incurred to bring those witnesses to Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, another attorney, Judge Hall, who was appointed to represent Hart as backup counsel, assuming that Hart was going to represent himself, asked Bright today to withdraw from the case as backup counsel. Bright accepted his withdrawal.

Bright said the court will appoint a new trial attorney for Hart in case McMahon is not available or able to represent Hart at an October trial.

“There will be no more defense continuances,” Bright told Hart.

How much more pathetic can you get henski?

You looked up the name John Hart and posted an article of a stalker to say it’s me?

You gotta get a life bruh

I’m on your mind waaay too much

And what really makes you look retarded, this John Hart guy remains in custody

You did all of this just to cover over the fact that I nailed the Foles trade days prior and nailed the signing of DeMarco Murray days prior

So funny, wanted to make a bet about the Murray trade saying if Murray signs you’ll leave the site, if he doesn’t I leave, when it’s widely known on here that you have multiple user names on here like the maniac you are

It’s so much easier to just bow the F down

Just bow down

And try to be less obvious next time okay?! You make a fool outta yourself every time

Here goes an article I just read, this proves Chip wasn’t lying about being offered a first, same team that approached the Rams probably approached Chip, also proves Bradford was sought out by more than us.

folesfisher
AP
Rams coach Jeff Fisher says the Eagles weren’t the only team that approached him about acquiring Sam Bradford in a trade. The Eagles were just the only team that offered a quarterback the Rams thought could be their starter.

Fisher said today on PFT Live that the Rams had previously been offered a late first-round draft pick for Bradford and turned that down, because until recently the Rams were planning on keeping Bradford in St. Louis.

“There were some discussions, yes, but from our standpoint, the first-round pick — obviously it’s attractive, but you still don’t have a quarterback. It’s a late pick and then would we move up and get into position to draft one? It didn’t make sense to us,” Fisher said.

The Rams only changed course on their willingness to trade Bradford when the Eagles called and offered Nick Foles.

It’s a safe bet that it was the Browns that offered the Eagles a first round pick for Bradford.

If Matt Cassell beats out EJ Manuel this Summer for the Starting QB Job, than EJ Manuel needs to move on or hang them up.. He needs to Step up this Year.. OC is Greg roman who waorked well with Kapernick early on so he should be able to refine Mauel and put him in positions to be successful..

Rex doesn’t beleive in passing the ball. All Manuel has to do is not fuck up his 20-25 passes a game.

That’s it.

Didn’t I say the AFC East is going to be a Tough 4 Games this Year
Dolphins , Bills and Jets all have improved and the Dolphins and Bills were decent Teams to begin with.. The Jets will have a Top 5 Defense and have the 6th Overall Pick… They Grab WR Kevin White or Amari Cooper or Could Trade Back with Browns for #12 & #19 (Which would be the smart move) and can still Grab RB Gordon or Gurley and WR D Parker or J Strong.. Thats a Kick Ass Start for Todd Bowles and Co..

Another reason I can believe that they were offered a 1st Rd pick and turned it down cause Jeff fisher needs to win this yr or at least have a winning record and having two 1st Rd picks does him no good him drafting a rookie qb does him no good also….. that’s why you turn down that deal you get a young qb on the cheap who has had good seasons smart move Jeff fisher

In honor of the creepy stalker (that is one sick dude)

I’m hearing from my sources that Nate Allen got $23M with $11.5 guaranteed—
damn the money is flowing! did the raiders watch film? Do they like chasing receivers 75 yards down the field as they run to the end zone?

I read that same one too….Chip is getting it done…he is making the right moves…I love Shady…but today’s NFL with the salary structure and the bum deal that the players signed with the Owners in collective bargaining…you have to make moves

Chip has upgraded the talent level, improved the QB situation and defense…and still has the draft to make more moves on offense

Sound moves, intelligent gambles, got rid of dead weight in Foles

Good Job by Chip! Bottom Line!
