Notes From The Phillies’ 4-1 Win Over Washington

jeromeThe Philadelphia Phillies won the first game of their series with the Washington Nationals on Friday night 4-1. Their record improves to 2-2.

On The Mound

  • Jerome Williams made a solid debut, allowing just one run on five hits and a walk through six innings.
  • Luis Garcia worked a scoreless seventh, and earned the win.
  • Ken Giles bounced back from a rocky debut two nights ago to pitch a scoreless eighth.
  • Giles did allow a two-out double during the inning.
  • Jonathan Papelbon earned his second save of the season with a one-two-three ninth inning.

At The Plate

  • The Phillies scored four runs on seven hits.
  • A four-run rally in the seventh inning saved the team from suffering another shutout.
  • The team took advantage of an erratic inning from Gio Gonzalez, who pitched six strong innings before that. Grady Sizemore and Cameron Rupp worked walks to begin the inning, and Andres Blanco was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cesar Hernandez stepped in as a pinch-hitter, and delivered a two-run single. Ben Revere was then hit by a pitch, and Freddy Galvis delivered a single to make it 3-1. Chase Utley added a sacrifice fly to cap the team’s lead.
  • With the exception of the seventh, it was another rough night at the plate for this team.
  • Ben Revere went 1-3 with a single.
  • Freddy Galvis was moved up to the two-hole, and responded by going a perfect 3-3 (all singles) and also worked a walk.
  • Utley finished 0-3, and also grounded into a double-play in the sixth.
  • Darin Ruf played first to give Ryan Howard the night off, but went 0-3 with a walk. Ruf is now hitless in three starts.
  • Jeff Francoeur went 1-4 with a single.
  • Grady Sizemore went 0-2.
  • Cameron Rupp started for Carlos Ruiz and went 0-3.
  • Andres Blanco played third for Cody Asche, and went 0-2.

Final Thoughts

The Phillies got away with a pretty poor offensive effort tonight.

Before the seventh inning, this group was downright brutal. Gio Gonzalez was cruising through this batting order, and hadn’t even thrown 75 pitches by the time the seventh inning began. That’s right, the Phils were barely making him throw 10 pitches an inning through the first six frames.

Ryne Sandberg’s group caught a big break in the seventh when Gonzalez and the Washington pitching staff went wild and handed them a victory.

Nice to see Ken Giles bounce back from his tough debut and throw a scoreless eighth. On rare nights where the Phillies are able to get a lead to the eighth inning, they’ve really got a potent combo with Giles and Papelbon anchoring the eighth and ninth innings.
