The Philadelphia Phillies lost their third straight game on Tuesday night, falling to the Mets 6-5. Their record drops to 3-5.
On The Mound
- David Buchanan had another mediocre outing. Buchanan lasted just 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits.
- Buchanan was spotted an early one-run lead, but immediately gave it back in the bottom of the first. He then allowed three runs to score in the bottom of the second, and one more in the fifth.
- Jake Diekman relieved Buchanan in the sixth, and was able to pick up the final out without allowing more runners to score.
- Dustin McGowan gave up a solo homer in the eighth inning that would prove to be difference in the game.
- Justin De Fratus struck out two in a scoreless ninth.
At The Plate
- The Phillies managed to score five runs on seven hits.
- Chase Utley snapped out of his funk early in the game, giving the Phillies an early lead with his solo homer in the first inning.
- Utley would knock in another run with an RBI-single in the third.
- Chase would cap his evening with another solo homer later in the game.
- Cody Asche hit his first home run of the season.
- Jeff Francoeur delivered his second homer of the season as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning.
- Odubel Herrera got to bat leadoff, but went 0-5.
- Freddy Galvis went 0-4.
- Ryan Howard went 0-3 with two strikeouts.
- Grady Sizemore went 0-3, dropping his average to .111.
- Ben Revere hit out of the eighth spot, and went 1-4 with a single.
Final Thoughts
It took eight games, but the Phils finally managed a night in which they scored five runs. And they did it against Matt Harvey, of all people.
However, the five-run outburst came on a night where the pitching staff just wasn’t up to snuff.
David Buchanan was disappointing again, and Dustin McGowan allowed a critical run to be tacked on in the eighth.
Fire Ruben, buyout Howard, trade Hamels. In that order.
don’t let utley get 500 ABS is also in there
trading hamels while it is the conventional wisdom and something that should be done– prospects in these big trades rarely work out league wide… for example tommy joseph was a solid prospect, gets concussions— drabek who we traded for halliday was an A1 prospect and fizzled– there are dozens of other examples– that said…trade him..
Ohhhhhhhh, now your on board with trade them?!?! Where was this, for the last 3 years, when you relentlessly, irrationally ripped me, when I was telling the truth about this dreck, & you were bending over backwards, make excuses for your failure hero, enabling his idiocy, & were ok with all his retarded transactions??? 2-3 years too late, havenoclue!!!!
How the hell could you have traded Howard in 12? Explain that wizard! Also dickwad you had them winning the east in 12 and endorsed the paplebon signing… So shut up!
By the way I liked many of the moves they made and so did you …they were trying to win. Things didn’t work out but they tried to win.
Where the fuck did I say they could have traded Howard in 12′? Jackass, they should have NEVER signed him, while still under contract for 2 more years, when he was a fat POS, already showing signs of decline. And I said this at the time! Papelbon is, & was a good signing, but AS I SAID AT THE TIME!, it was too much $$$$, & your hero bid against himself, for NO REASON! YOU are a clueless blind-ass, thoughtless, clueless assmuppet, front office lemming. 2-3 years TOO LATE, & an in over his head, clueless inept POS GM as your hero!!!! You STFU!!!!
He is not my hero…that is in your angry mind. Actually no you just said good signing. They brought in players to try to win…it ends up costing you.
how do you rebuild when you have 3 25$ players? you can’t..you have to try to win– they were the vegas favorites to win in 12 but you still had 3 $25 players two of who broke down completely-
as for howard and his contract i’ve explained it to you several times but you are too stupid or pig headed — It is common in baseball to sign your franchise brand player early-Cabrerra did it twice– It is how it works, consider that if howards 12,13, 14 were .260 35 and 110, below the prior three years and allowing for decline he would be a lock HOF — but he got injured and declined rapidly– franchise brand players who appear in national commercials and tv shows add value to the franchise…the phils have no right whining about howard– we as fans can be pissed but the contract was how its done– and look around those contracts very rarely workout in the back end of it… only this one happens to have really gotten bad…
Be happy with another decade of shit teams, penny pinching, hubris, & nepotism!!!!
Can someone please explain why Howard is still being trotted out on a daily basis. In what scenario is starting Howard and batting him 4th a smart move or help “rebuild” the team. He not only strikes out 80% of the time, he does it on three pitches. I actually feel bad for him at this point. He had four great seasons, but if you watched, his power numbers consistently began falling as the league figured out he cant hit lefties and has no plate discipline (strikes himself out). He’s not going to “get hot” and bring a return of young players via trade and his contract (which he was given a year and half before it was necessary) is untradeable. Even if Ruf gave you equally poor offensive numbers to that of Howard, at least he can field the position. So frustrating. This team is wasting time with Siezmore, Howard, Ruiz & even Utley. They’re gonna stink anyway, why not play young guys and see what they have. This team waits to call up players until they’re 26, free agent eligible by 30 and signed to long term deals from 30-35 when they can’t play anymore. I love the Phillies, but this is brutal to watch.
It is the most tragic fall from grace for an athlete i’ve ever seen….
the injury, age and they have found the huge hole in his swing (or his hole has gotten bigger)–
i can only assume they trot him out with the hopes that he gets some kind of streak going and they can get a mid level prospect??? dunno.and i don’t think they think he’s not blocking anyone
as for the contract– watch around baseball– franchise guys usually are locked up before they need to be– its the way they do business– Votto, Cabrerra (best player in baseball) got extended twice before they had to and he will eventually be a $30 million hit when he’s 38,39 and 40, david wright i believe– Howard was so huge nationally for the phillies brand it was normal business—now this practice is slowly changing but it has much more to do with the brand than it does projecting on field performance- that said at this point its an albatross of a contract- eat it and move on.
i dont think howard is tragic that writing was on the wall the whole time for imo. i know i was not happy with that contract and pleaded we signed pujols, fielder or someone else when his contract was up… oh well
everz your right though he should not be playing… but reuben im guessing is begging that he gets hot so someone will give up something for him… its a crime he is starting over ruff and the bigger crime is franco is in the minors …
regarding ruiz i disagree he has to play there is nobody else
regarding utley i disagree he has to play because he is good. the thing about utley that pisses me off is we couldve got a haul for him the past two years but they wont move him which is a disgrace. I hope utley plays well the first half of this year so we move him for some young talent at the deadline
well puljos is on a terrible contract, fielder will be–
it is tragic in that for about a 5-6 year period he was simply the best run producer (top 3)– had the achilles and the game passed him by at a pretty young age– anytime you sign a big producer like that you end up with the declining years and injuries are sure to happen.
also utley hasn’t agreed to be moved– he has that right…
ur right about pujols and fielder… just saying at the time thats what i wanted both were better than howard and not a liability to strike out as much… i think the 3rd guy i preferred over howard was adrian gonzales
Gozales has the best contract of that group
henski the one thing that has to be pointed out is that at the time howad was all over tv (subway and entourage come to mind)- those things add to a franchises exposure etc– those players get paid–
phillies can’t cry ‘poor us’ now– howard and others filled that stadium and helped get them the tv deal…and i’m sure you like every fan didn’t leave your seat or your tv when howard was due up that inning..
Other Terrible Contracts
Alex Rodriquez, Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton in Terms of Production versus Costs
Pitchers – There is a lot of them due to Injuries .. .(C Lee, M Cain, CC Sabathia, J Verlander an Others..)
As i’ve pointed out paul– its the market… it sucks, we as fans see a guy sign for $150 million or whatever and then get hurt… its the business– baseball can’t cry about it.
you failed to mention lincicum, braun, votto, wright and on and on…
There are a lot more …
Pitchers Tanaka, CJ Wilson, Lincecum, Strasburg, Darvish,
Position Players like Texiera, BJ Upton, and Recent Signings of Sandoval, M Kemp & J Lester
I’d Rather see the Phils go Young like they did for a while last mid-season and actually played well with a bunch of young, hungry Players ..
As far as Positional Players I like Cody Ashe, Galvis has played well, Herrera is learning on the fly..Ruf needs to relax and get set playing time..
Buy Sizemore, Francouer, Ruiz, Utley & Howard are all taking Playing Time from the young kids ..
it is why I never complain about a contract– its the business and means nothing…. FUNNY MONEY– damn i wish i was 25 and could have a few years of hitting .260 with about 24 hr’s and 90 rbis
strasburg contract isnt bad. pretty sure its his rookie deal
strasburg isn’t bad i think they bought a couple of his arbitration years
My bad, not Strasburg who is still young under those Arbitration Deals like Harper, I meant the the big name Pitcher Matt Scherzer that Signed this Off-Season will turn out to be a bad long-term deal for the Club…
Back to the Hamels for prospects trade…remember a couple of years ago everyone wanted the phils to get 3B Mike Olt from Texas? he was a slam dunk prospect… he will be 27 this season– 100 games in the ML hittin .158.
if you also remember correctly EVERYONE in baseball wanted Dom Brown… Phils held on…he’s a bust… trading for prospects is hit or miss
Yes it is hit or miss, but this team is NOT going to compete for 2-3 years, so why hold on to Hamels if you can get some decent prospects? Do it now before you are stuck with him pitching on a bad team for years? Even if it doesn’t work out, it frees up money to spend elsewhere.
You really think that they should keep him?
NO WAY– i said that in my first post on this thread— you have to no doubt– an ACE on this team is worthless—-
and its more miss than hit… but they have to…looks like they have solid pitching prospects now– a corner OF and/or catcher would be nice.
Sorry, I didn’t review the whole thread. Too many.
Too bad about Tommy Joseph and all of his concussions.. That should have filled that hole.
I can see why the Phils were trying to get Betts now, but the Sox have so nice secondary prospects though.
Boston Minor Leagues are one of the Best Year in and Year out..
Phils need to study and learn what Franchises like Boston, St Louis,Miami and even Pittsburgh are doing with their Young PLayers in terms of Teaching and learning how to play the game the right way…
They all have sound fundamentals, make contact, High Baseball IQ’s, etc,etc
The Game has changed to a throwback era of Pitching, Defense and Small Ball which relies on Fundamentals, Good Situational Hitting, Base Running and overall Team Speed instead of Steroid Juiced up Batters swinging for the Fences…
yup– lots of 3-2 games!
lets hope that the Red Sox stay hot as they seem to be the best trade partner as far as pieces we can receive in return. mookie betts is playing well but you cant expect for him to keep it up all season.
A trade with the red sox has to involve Betts or Swihart. If we can get one of them, as well as a AA pitching prospect and a Jackie Bradley type player, I would take that deal. Hamels is a beast but for some reason I see us wearing him down and risking injury before a trade happens. Then you can forget about getting any quality prospects for him..
Betts is playing too well for Red Sox to Move …
I can see them giving up OF Bradley,Phillie Favorite Victorino and a Minor League Pitcher or Two for Hamels and that’s about it…
The more success the Sox have, the less likely they are to trade one Betts or Swihart. You may only be able to get a package centering around Owens.
I get it, teams give out bad contracts on occasion. But, in the cases of Votto, Fielder, and Cabrera there are factors that Howard never had. Howard had prolific power for 4 years and that was it. He can’t run, a butcher in the field and has a poor mental approach at the plate (ie walking when a pitcher will not throw strikes). The above named guys can field, have prolific OBP, can run a little bit and most importantly most were all at least 4 years younger when locked-up. Cabrera was older but he is an all-time, HOF player. Howard was already 30-31 when he was locked -up. That ‘s why the Cardinals let Pujols walk. Bad business to lock-up an aging player long term, regardless of past performance. I’m not trying to disagree for the sake of doing so, just frustrated by where this team finds themselves due to poor planning, drafting and some luck, I guess.
again– the point is he was a top run producer and a top identifiable player for the franchise– signing that contract actually brought even more nationwide attention to the Phillies… money means nothing, the value of that franchise grew more than any other in baseball during this time– that’s the business of it…. cut him, pay him let him try to get his head right as DH for the whoevers.
I think the Biggest Problem with the Phillies was that most of their Core Players were all locked up with Big, Long-Term Contracts around the same time which I believe brough a sense of being too comfortable and where the Team lost their Edge, their Fight, their Never say Die Attitude and Energy that was prevalent in the lat 2007,2008,2009.2010 Seasons..
Players like Rollins,Utley, Howard, Halladay,Lee and Hamels were all key figures and we locked up long-term… Then Injuries occurred, a couple of other Players were traded or let go (Werth, Pence, to make room for Younger Players like D Brown, who simply never Developed) The Rest of the Division and the NL have all improved over the last 5 Seasons while the Phils basically remained the same, got older, incurred injuries, and haven’t had the Leadership in the Front Office to make some difficult decisions to turn things around …
When amaro said you can’t have 15 million dollar players at all positions he was wrong…you have them as long as you don’t have $25 million dollar players.
Ultimately the demise is due to lack of 24,25 year old replacements. Brown, ruff, the guy in the lee trade and Joseph none developed… They were four nice prospects …
Ultimately, I agree HAC. They have to cut bait with Howard. In essence, pay him to go away. That’s were I’m confused. No rational baseball mind can see any reason to continue running him out there at this point. Stop hoping he brings a prospect or finds a time machine. Him playing every day does no one any good.
The Mike Trout contract could be the most interesting in baseball history…obviously his talent is through the roof. The rangers and his people totally negotiated without the CBA in mind. The bought out all of his arbitration years and are paying him $34 million a year when he is 26, 27, 28…. so imagine what his next contract will be like assuming he has the type of years a 26,27,28 year old stud should have! he will have made $145 Million at 28. So the next one will be the biggest ever, pay him obscene money through his 30’s and when he declines…its just part of the business! man will make close to $500M total i bet–
Sixers season ends and….. I am confused again. I watched (not a lot) of games and was impressed with Noel, Covington and a select few along with coach Brown. Then I look at their final record of 18 wins and say WTF? You would of thought they won 35 games by all the positive improvement talk. lol They were the best 18 win team in NBA history. The Sixers have somehow someway secretly hypnotized the fans to make us think we had a pretty good year. lol. Its strange. One thing I did learn during Brett Browns post game interview is that he didn’t seem to be on board with this plan. He stated that this is the last year he will be involved with coaching Gypsies and a revolving door of players. Next year we must play to win. Very interesting. Plus if Im correct the Sixers got screwed this year and not one extra 1st round pick will be theirs because not one scenario worked out for them from the other teams this year. SMH.
Dag, it depends on the order of the lottery, but yes if everything plays out like it should they will only receive their pick because tanking is not a plan it’s a hope. They can package some of those future 1’s to get another first this year but you know damn well if that happens it’ll blow up in their faces as well. Yes Brett Brown seemed to be making a stand last night because now he can, he would be hired by another franchise quicker then Andy Reid found that KC job.
If you’re confused on the Sixers you haven’t been watching and are clueless. They pick top 3 and roll in Embiid next year. The Heat and Thunder pick roll into next year. They’ve got stash in McRae and PJack can bring back McDaniels if they choose and can go into free agency and make some noise on younger players. On top of that they shut down Wroten (who I’m not a fan of) but if he played midway through year makes this team 25-30 win team and that would have been a disaster. They finish in or near top 10 in defense.
And let’s not forget how the picked up a DLeague player in Covington 99% of the posters on here laughed at and he turned out to be a quality find.
I fully understand the plan. All im saying is I am actually excited and ai cant wait for the future. But i cant understand how I feel like they had a good year with 18 wins. Its amazing.
What Draft Picks will the 76ers End up with or the 2015 Draft ?
Wont know until the lottery. Right now only looks like their own top pick unless a team jumps from 11-14 into no.1. That would push Miami to 11.
However if they dont get either Miami or OKC picks they simply roll into next year.
Miami top 10 protected and I believe OKC lowers as well. Also Lakers pick is only top 3 protected I think.
Right now I would go
1. Mudiay
2. Russell
3. Winslow
4. Johnson/or Euro Stash
Mudiay is the better player but I think Russell would be the better fit.
With the development of a raw player like Noel into something usable on the offensive and stellar defensively and the development of Covington I am fine with how they are handling things.
But in all realism if Embiid is as talented as many think…that is all that matters. He will literally vault them into playoff contention with how this team plays defensively.
Oh and Brown is going nowhere its why he was given the contract he was given. Because Hinkie does not speak to media for the most part Brown is the mouthpiece of the organization to the fans.
I think he also knows how special Embiid is and knows that they are now ahead of the game in terms of rebuilding.
If Embiid was not presenting himself well (despite those bogus weight and attitude rumors) he would be singing a different tune (we have to wait and see…development is slow).
With Noels development and now Embiid and the possiblity of filling a backcourt position. If we can get our hands on a wing (Leonard) that would be awesome to see.
