Notes From The Phillies’ 5-2 Loss To Washington

hamelsmarlinsThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their fifth straight game on Thursday night, falling to the Nationals 5-2. Their record drops to 3-7.

On The Mound

  • Cole Hamels turned in another disappointing start, lasting just six innings and allowing five runs.
  • Hamels have up five hits, two homers, and four walks.
  • Cole gave up a run in the first inning, and after his offense gave him a 2-1 lead he quickly spit it back up and proceeded to allow four runs to score over his final three innings of work.
  • Luis Garcia pitched a scoreless seventh.
  • Jonathan Papelbon came out to get some work in, tossing a clean eighth.

At The Plate

  • The Phillies managed just two runs only five hits.
  • Odubel Herrera hit at the top of the order again, but went 0-3 with a walk.
  • Freddy Galvis went 1-3 and knocked in one of the team’s runs.
  • Chase Utley turned in another hitless performance, going 0-4.
  • Jeff Francoeur hit out of the cleanup spot again, going 1-3 with a walk.
  • Cody Asche hit fifth, but went 0-4.
  • Ryan Howard hit seventh, and went 1-3.
  • Darin Ruf batted eighth and played left field, going 1-3 with a double and an RBI.

Final Thoughts

This was a thoroughly depressing game on a number of levels.

First, we have ace Cole Hamels who gave up more than four runs for the second time in his first three starts. Run support is a rare thing for Hamels, but today he was given a lead and failed to protect it. It was a lackluster effort from Hamels.

The team is now on a five-game losing streak, and with a miserable lineup that has still yet to score more than five runs, things won’t be improving anytime soon.
