Back-Up To The Back-Up Competition

In regards to Mr. Tim Tebow and what to make of the signing, at least Philly has a non-Mariota topic of conversation until the NFL draft.

I would prefer a third string quarterback who has won regular season games and a playoff game over Matt Barkley. Any argument that Tebow will compete for the starting quarterback role because we couldn’t land Mariota is absurd. If we are relying on Tebow to start at some point in the season, it means that Bradford and Sanchez are injured, or it’s week four of the preseason.

Is it really as big of a deal as it has already and will continue to become?

If any roster addition or subtraction, big or small made by Chip surprises people at this point, it really shouldn’t. Chip has made it clear he likes competition at every single starter and back-up position on this football team.

It’s obviously different with signing a former first rounder, who had a “cult-like” following due to his lifestyle and religious devotion on and off of the football field. The guy was unable to contribute as a Jet once traded from Denver and couldn’t hold down a roster spot with the Patriots. He then vacates the NFL for some behind the camera work, declares he is dedicated to land with a NFL team, and winds up an Eagle.
Am I a Tebow fan? The answer falls into two categories with this guy, the “person” and the “player.”

I feel some of the attention he creates, but listening to a guy that I respect in Brian Dawkins, this is who the guy is, it’s not a “front” he is a “different” type of person. Tebow is a kid that is very emotional, spiritual and a high-intensity competitor.

Tebow is not a starting NFL quarterback, he has less than a 50% completion percentage and his arm strength, accuracy and timing is below average. He can do some different things with his athleticism, but it requires coaches to design plays to “fit” what he can do.

I’m fine with the signing; this is for a back-up to the back-up quarterback position.

So what are the positives to take away from the newest signed Philadelphia Eagle?

-Hopefully this means Chip has enough quarterbacks to compete. That the possible draft pick he may have used on a prospect can now go to another position of need.

-We have a reason to watch in the pre-season when all of the starters are out of the game.

Bradford is the starter, Sanchez is the back-up and Tebow is battling for 3rd quarterback position.

That’s it, and it’s how it needs to be interpreted because that is the truth of the situation. Maybe if Tebow makes the final roster and is active on game day, we see him a run a play or two near the goal-line or in a short yardage situation.

He won’t be drafted in fantasy football leagues, but “too” many of his jerseys will end up being sold, that is if they are even manufactured.

It’s laughable the whole Tebow craze, but entertaining to say the least.
