Should It Be Marcus Mariota Or Build The Football Team?

EricRowe1A chance still exists for the Eagles to move up and draft Marcus Mariota, but it’s not likely.  I personally don’t think it would be a good idea for the Birds to trade three first round draft picks, and players like Fletcher Cox and Mychal Kendricks in order to move up to draft the Oregon Ducks’ Heisman Trophy winner.

Yes, you do need outstanding quarterback play to win the Super Bowl, but you also need to improve the secondary, fill holes in the offensive line and add speed and talent to the wide receiver group.   It would make no sense for the Eagles to gut their team for the sake of getting Mariota then be without the talent to surround him.  This youngster can’t win a Super Bowl by himself.  In case you missed it, he wasn’t able to lead The Ducks to a NCAA Championship with the talent around him at Oregon.

I think there’s a lot better chance of the Eagles trading back in the first round rather than trading up.  Both Eagles head coach Chip Kelly and the team’s Player Personnel Director Ed Marynowitz have said a lot about their evaluation of this draft. If anything they said they want more picks.

“There are certain, probably eight to 10 players at the top end that are true difference-maker-type, quality individuals”, Marynowitz said. “At that next tier of guys where you’re going to have solid starter level players, I think there is depth at the offensive line. I think there is certainly depth at wide receiver and at the corner-safety position. So it’s a good draft in the mid-round in that solid-starter category for those guys.”

I agree with their assessment which means there are plenty of players with solid starter level talent in the second, third and fourth rounds.  I would have no problem with the Eagles trading back in round one to pick up additional, second, third, or fourth round picks this year.

The Birds need help in the areas where there’s depth at in this draft.  Their offensive line lost starting right guard Todd Herremans and will probably lose starting left guard Pro Bowler Evan Mathis as well.  They need to draft at least one offensive lineman this year that is capable of coming here and starting.

The wide receiver position is very deep again and the Eagles are desperate for more size, talent and speed at their wide receiver position.  I could see them grabbing two wide outs, if they get the chance.

“I’ve watched draft classes for a long time. And, yes, the one last year was very good. I think this has the chance to be the best draft class certainly I’ve ever seen,” NBC’s Cris Collinsworth told USA Today.  “I couldn’t believe how many receivers I watched and thought they were first-round talent. I got down to about 11 players that I thought had first-round ability.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if some team that needed wide receivers took two — took one in the first round and one in the second round. You could set yourself up for a number of years,” said Collinsworth.

Think about all the names on this wide receiver list:  Alabama’s Amari Cooper, West Virginia’s Kevin White, Louisville’s DeVante Parker, Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham, Miami’s Phillip Dorsett, USC’s Nelson Agholor, Central Florida’s Breshad Perrimen, Arizona State’s Jaelen Strong, Ohio State’s Devin Smith, Georgia’s Chris Conley and Auburn’s Sammie Coates.

The other spot they have need in is in the secondary and they’re looking for versatile defensive backs who can play both the safety and cornerback positions.

“A guy that can play corner and safety may be a little bit more valuable than a guy that can only play safety”, Marynowitz. “But that’s with 53 man value, 46 man game-day value, the more you can do, the more valuable you are.”

There are a number of draft prospects who fit the bill such as:  UConn’s Byron Jones, Utah’s Eric Rowe,  Miami of Ohio’s Quinten Rollins and USC’s Josh Shaw.  Jones will go early, Rowe could be a great selection in the second or third round, Rollins could be a late bloomer but Shaw is likely to be around on Saturday and will be a great value pick. His suspension for most of the season in 2014 could stop the Birds from picking him.

Green-Beckham would be an ideal choice for the Birds, but his off the field issues will stop the Birds from selecting him.  Washington’s Marcus Peters could have been the Birds selection, but his character problems will force the Birds to pass.  Shaw will likely be avoided by the Birds because of the incident that caused him to be suspended from the team a year ago.

The Eagles draft board is smaller than most of the teams in the league because of their refusal to deal with players who have off the field problems and their commitment to drafting players who fit their size, speed and intelligence profile.

Hey Cobb our field general said Mariota can give you multiple Super Bowl. In my opinion this is a no-brainer I wrote two to three months ago Kendrix and Cox and three first rounders is going to get it done. If thats what need to be done that’s what needs to be done. Don’t get it twisted Cox and Kendrix are Pro bowl type players. If chip is confident when he says we can win multiple Super Bowl with this guy then I’m all in. We are going to lose a lot on defense if we run a 3/4 when Kendrix in Cox are gone, but suppose we run a 4/3 our defense would still be solid. In the second round we go after a safety with that pic we would be straight.

qb is the most important position in football obviously and multiple winners of super bowls are rare– if he believes that in his heart and he is knowledgeable… i say yup do it…
we all in hindsight would have made tom brady the first pick in the draft, joe montana etc….

So not only do you want to give up the 2 best defensive players on the team, but you also want to change the defense? You move to a 4-3 and now you are weak at DT and OLB when Graham moves back to DE. Or do you think that Ryans is going to be 100% and they move Kiko outside? Maybe. This is not as easy as you make it sound.

I agree with you one hundred percent it’s not easy but that’s all we have we don’t have a great or should I say soon-to-be great player anymore in Cox with this scheme (3/4) if Cox go’s, however we do have very good pass rushers and Allen and Thornton in the middle it only makes sense to go 4/3

Do it. Trade everyone and all the picks. They only need Mariotta right? He doesn’t need someone to throw to. They don’t need anyone on the defensive side of the ball, because they are going to score 50-60 points a game right?

More reports are finally leaking out about what I stated that Sam Bradford is planning on retiring after this Season.. He will have Earned $75 Million over his 5 Year NFL Career (He was the last #1 Pick that were paid these huge Rookie Deals under the old CBA)
There is Zippo Trade Value for Sam Bradford out there in the NFL and some of his close friends/family have verified that he has lost his zeal for Playing Professional Football and that he’s eager to get started in his next phase of life…. I knew this Deal for Bradford was a huge mistake, this damn Kelly just simply does not do his homework enough on GM Duties and Roster Management….

***It’s just been Reported that Marcus Mariota failed to have Vaccines as a kid in Hawaii and that the Chargers & Browns have dropped out of Trade Negotiations with the Titans for that 2nd Pick…
His family has Strong Beliefs about Vaccinations and goes against their Religious Beliefs and Traditions while the NFL & Players Union have strict laws that Govern every Player to be Fully Vaccinated before Playing the in the NFL ….
Apparently Chip Kelly was aware of this when he Recruited Mariota to Oregon for College Ball and shrugged it off as no big deal..

Lighten up OldPhilly,
It’s no more ridiculous than half the other bs rumors or trade scenarios that have been floating out here all week long….
I personally am not that High on Mariota to give up a bunch of Picks or Players up for him…
I hope Mariota is off the Board early so that the Eagles Brass can then concentrate on the Picks and Selections that they have ahead of them over the entire Draft

Lets join the pantheon of the ultra-desperate.

There is little doubt about that

What has me the most puzzled is if this was Kelly’s Plan all along to really get his Guy in Mariota which I have no Problem with as it his Team,
then why trade your highest Value Players or “Best Trading Chips” beforehand …

Would a Deal to Titans of Foles, McCoy, Kendricks or Cox with the 20th Pick not been a better Deal for the Titans and filled some of the many needs that they have with Quality NFL Ready Football Players, but of course those conversations would have had to happen a while back during the Free-agency period so Teams can figure out their Salary Cap,. Free Agency and Draft Strategy… Did Chip ever approach the Titans this Off-Season about what could work and not work Trade wise..

WAY I SEE THEY BETTER GET YOTA

IF THEY DONT AND BRADFORD IS AVERAGE OR ABOVE THEYRE GONNA HAVE TO GIVE HIM 80 MILLION BARE MINIMUM OR SIGN RG3 OR CAM OR DRAFT SOMEONE NEXT YEAR TO START OR GO WITH SANCHEZ. ALL OF WHICH ARE NOT CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER OPTIONS

GET HIM AND LETS BUILD SOMETHING REAL IF CHIP THINKS HE REALLY IS GOING TO WIN MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE LEAGUE. BARNEY RUBBLE SAID HE WOULD SO GO FN GET HIM

How does this work with Bradford right now? Everyone in the universe, including him, knows he was just acquired to “flip”.

If that doesn’t happen (and it’s looking more and more like no one wants the guy – what a surprise) then what is he?

He’s read/heard about/has had his agent in multiple trade negotiations for weeks now and knows he’s sloppy seconds. Kelly never wanted him in the first place other than to flip.

Eagles have to get Mariotta don’t they?

Get it done!

This is how you get the deal done chip
Trade Kendricks and your entire 2015 draft to the titans for #2

You then trade Bradford to the Browns 2,3,5th Rd picks
And you flip Boykin for 5th and 6th Rd picks

Boom

I understand its fun to talk about Mariota and the us getting him until the draft is over, but damn how much more can you guys do it? I know it all ends tomorrow when we lay low and just build through the draft. Bradford is our guy. If we move up, move up to take a Amari Cooper or some shit. Screw Mariota and all this talk. Chip is bold, but not nearly bold enough to trade a whole draft away for one guy especially when he’s already said the draft is how you build a football team, and Bradford isn’t going anywhere. Expect us to lay some what low like Chip has done the previous 2 drafts.

CT,

You are correct. It’s fun to speculate and think-up various trade options, but there is nearly zero possibility that the Eagles are going to move up for Mariota.

The Philadelphia fan base just can’t wrap their head around the fact that Chip likes Sam Bradford. Frankly, I struggle to see where Bradford is a significant improvement over Foles. One thing for sure – Chip thinks Bradford is much better than Foles…. Lets hope he’s right…..

Hey gloomy here’s the deal ..if they draft the big duck you turn that frown upside down ..and new monicker smileysmitty..here s the head scratcher I’m trying to figure out… It’s an exercise in futility ,but I have no life so…why didn’t he start Matt Barkley vs the Giants .? If he shines we show tape to the league and increase our perceived assets value,if he fails we embolden our draft position making a jump up in the draft that much more economical. Why did he trade a cheap alternative in foles before the draft ? His value must be higher when comparing him with unknowns on draft day ..If he’s finding zero trade value in sam on draft day ,why was he willing to pay up to get him? I like everyone else can’t wait to see what unfolds here ..I hope he doesn’t as some suggest trade potential pro bowlers in cox and kendrick..The last thing we need do ,is weaken the cards dealt to bill davis imo..become the Giants ..run and play defense and have specialized special teams ..that’s a formula for being in every game ..

Exactly. Several of us were calling for Barkley, Polk and other scrubs for that last game.

Was the smart play if Kelly thought more than 1 day ahead. Would have helped draft position. Could have featured some players and perhaps raised their stock (Polk, Barkley) Maybe squeeze a conditiional pick for those guys. (better than nothing)

Also….if you know you’re trading McCoy (and obv he did) then why play him in that last meaningless game? Can’t raise his value – he’s already a known commodity. Only thing that could happen is bad vis a vis injury.
