Does Questionable Third Round Pick Overshadow Two Good Selections?

ChipKelly1I was feeling pretty good about the Eagles draft until their third selection. Once the Mariota pipe dream was over and offensive line went off the draft board early to some of our NFC East rivals, I felt it was cornerback or wide receiver with our first pick of the 2015 draft.

Agholor in round one, at the time, it was between him and Perriman for the wide receiver position or Jones to help in the secondary. I preferred the skill-set of Agholor over Perriman, and would have been just fine with taking Jones. Agholor I don’t see as Maclin 2.0, I feel their measurable are very similar, but I think Agholor can be a better pro in the NFL, and I’m excited for the young trio we have at the wide receiver position for years to come.

Day 1 of the draft, I went to bed happy, a feeling nobody had last year after day one of the draft.

Preparing for rounds two and three of the draft, upgrade the secondary and offensive line. When was Eric Rowe going to go in round two? Would Fisher drop to pick #52, and how would Chip decide between a Ute and a former Duck?

I looked at all of the teams in front of the Eagles, and there were certainly a few that I felt could take Rowe, which Chip may have also believed to have been true. I felt this draft had better depth at offensive line in the mid rounds and that the talent level in potential safeties really dropped off after the second round.

Chip may have also felt this way as he traded up to ensure he selected “his” guy in Eric Rowe. Mixed reviews from the gcobb.com fan base throughout the pre-draft process on Mr. Rowe. I like the upside of the guy, and yes he did play for “Utah.” Eric Rowe I feel can turn into a similar player of another Eric who played at Utah, current San Diego Charger Eric Weddle.

With sending “both” fifth round selection to the Dolphins as part of the trade, a round where I really liked depth at cornerback, I felt it was necessary for offensive line and cornerback to be the next two player positions selected.

Then the selection of Hicks went down. Chip elected to add “depth” at the inside linebacker position when there was already a question mark with how “proven starter” Kendricks would fit into the line-backer mix.

Offensive line was the top need left for the team to address, however; prior to the start of the draft I mentioned how Chip and the coaching staff felt very excited about players currently on the Eagles roster. Gardner, Barbre and Tobin, Chip truly believes that all three guys can be starters for the Eagles for the upcoming season.

Will the Eagles go offensive line in round 4? Plenty of talent to begin day three of the NFL draft. Jamil Douglas is a name I would really like to be called on Saturday. The former Arizona State offensive lineman has experience at both guard and tackle.

With taking an inside linebacker in round three to shake up how people felt about the Eagles draft, would Chip stick to his “best player” strategy and perhaps select a quarterback like a “Hundley or a Petty” if they fell to pick #113.

Could Boykin be traded on Saturday to get another pick?

Four picks left to make as it currently stands. I’m looking forward to the end result, and would appreciate more “head turners” rather than “head scratcher” moves by Chip.

And cough up 4th & 5th Rounds again…

Bottom line to me this Draft was that Eagles were going in with 8 Picks and a few Players on the Trade Wire and to only
Have 3 Selections so far Picks out of the Top #190 Selections is not good enough for me, especially when the Eagles have so many Roster Spots still to fill .. No additions to the OL & DL will be the downfall of the 2015 Season, they sustain an Injury to LT, Center or Fletcher Cox, this Team and Season is doomed..

Its too nice a day here to be sitting inside watching that mess.

Here’s my only comment (well, right now anyway)

The 2nd most important area on a team (after QB) is OL.

Chip Kelly has had 3 drafts. 20 picks. 1 offensive lineman.

That’s a joke.

No way was I sitting inside whatching that.

And what was to watch anyway….did the Eagles even have a pick. Did they pick anyone??

2 good picks…then a guy they didn;t need way to early (had to as no 4th or 5h rounders) and then a couple of flyers in the 6th and 7th.

Wow, exciting……

The’ll b a bunch of UDFAs coming here, Mathis will be back n it looks like barbere on the other side, we’ll b fine this year, next year? Since DBs look set, LBs look set, WRs look set, D line, RBs, only needs will be is O line n maybe QB if Bradford doesn’t work out, we’re gonna be fine, as your doing all this complaining Vin progress is being made, remember, this year we’re gonna have 3 all pro O linemen starting with a young stud in Johnson n an upgrade over Herremans who was a weak link on that line, worry about 2016 when it gets here

Disagree, there is no way I consider Kelce & Mathis as Pro-Bowlers after each missed significant time.. Peters is declining faster than Fans think
This OL is no longer a strength or best in the Division
I expect a big step back this Season where the Defense improves but the OL & QB Play just don’t get it done against the better Teams

Him in decline is still better than three quarters of the LTs out there, as I stated, our O line will b fine this year.

I’m giving the Eagles a solid ‘B’ for the draft…the needed a few o-lineman in this draft instead of just stocking up on Cornerbacks…but its a good solid draft. filled the holes that we were most deficient in last year. Shored up the defense which cost us at least 3 games last year. A lot of competition at the corner and inside linebackers.
When we look at the oft-season on the whole…you have to give us a solid B+! We filled our most glaring holes….the defense..and we nabbed a receiver that will replace the lost of Maclin! Good job!

Obviously, not addressing the Oline is a head scratcher. But the LLCB I think is showing his plan and I think there may be some guys in the roster that he thinks higher of than we do. Didinger said they are very comfortable with Barbre. I think we would all agree that secondary was the biggest problem…by my count 2 or 3 FA and 3 picks…reminds me a bit of the year they drafted taylor and sheppherd ….biggest weakness then address it.
It will also be very interesting to see how some of the late round guys and even UDFA turn out. You have got to hit on a few late round guys.

Chip responding to Evan Mathis trade rumors from a reporter said that for two years Mathis has been given permission to seek a trade but no team has offered him anything…it was said in a way that could be interpreted as a dig at him….that is definitely the way Evan took it with the way he responded.

I give Eagles a solid C….chip had a great first two picks….sucked terriblly in middle rounds….then finished strong with two excellent CB prospects The corner at pick 191 is a star and the other guy at 196 is solid at 6 foot 196…but he really messed up in the middle rounds

Rowe has to be a starter —
the eagles can’t keep only getting one starter per draft ( Jordan Matthews ) before they implode into a 4 & 12 season.
Agholor and Rowe have to be above average starters to rescue that horrible 2014 draft.

EOS then how did Andy Reid survive getting no to fringe starters in multiple drafts?

The revisionist history we are having with the draft is mind boggling.

I will give the draft a C. I like Agholor, not that high on Rowe from watching him at Utah, however, it was his first year playing CB instead of safety(hopefully he will be a baller in the Eagles system and prove me wrong). Do not know enough about Hicks, hopefully he stays healthy. I like Randall Evans, do not know about the other cb from Kansas. The kid from BC is a project.

Agholor is a guarantee starter, if he can’t beat out Cooper,Austin and Huff than Kelly should be fired as GM and Marynowitz replaced too.
Rowe has an even easier path to be a starter than Agholor. Extremely easy to beat out Wolfe, Watkins, Carroll, Boykin, and Thurmond.

It appears to me that Rowe will be tried at Safety since the Eagles selected 2 developmental CB’s in the 6th
The 7th Round Pick from BC will be a Camp Body but is a hustler had perhaps tried as a DT to battle Beau Allen for a back-up spot…

As I mentioned going into this Draft which had Depth, but not a whole lot of NFL Talent so the best moves to make in my opinion was to ditch the 5,6 & 7th Rounders and a couple of misplaced Players to get more picks in the Top #125

The way the Eagles/Kelly maneuvered their Trades and Board
They went from #20,#41, #84 to #191 & #193 to finishing at #237
Which is disappointing since they went in with 8 Selections and 6 Pickes of the Top #156 Selections…
Once after the 4th Round came and went the Best Prospects were few and far between

I see 2 Solid Players & Contributors in WR Agholor & DB Rowe
2 Contributors on Special Teams and added quality depth/competition in LB Hicks and CB Shepard
Last 2 Picks probably are Practice SquadCamp Bodies Material

I looked around other Teams Drafts and it seems like many of the Good Teams moved up inRounds 2,3 or 4 forfeiting later Round Picks due to the lack of overall NFL Talent in the later rounds…
Top Team like the Pats,Seahawks appeared to use early/mid round picks on the strength of this Draft , which was OL …

Tampa Bay,Ravens,Steelers, NY Jets, Redskins, Pats, Arizona, Panthers, Lions
Seahawks, Saints, Chiefs, Jags, Dolphins, Browns, Bengals & Giants appeared to have had strong Drafts

Eagles, Cowboys, Packers, Bears, Falcons, Broncos, Rams not so much

Listened to Dave Spadaro after the draft. He said the Eagles was going to initially play Rowe at cornerback and take it from there.

they will move him to safety and he should be the starter opposite jenkins….the starters will be jenkins….maxwell……rowe……and thurmond…..leaving boykin and caroll at back up corner spots…..and marogos , watkins…..and couplin at safety…….goodbye woolfe…..not the best starting secondary but good depth and solid….. and let me say this right now the jacorey sheppard pick will be major steal and he will be starting soon in this league. He only allowed a 38.6 qb rating the guy didn’t get beat deep ever in coverage

After reading the profiles of all,the picks and UDFA it is very clear what this guys plan is. He wants to be the smartest guy in a room fully of smart guys.

There’s no doubt that Kelly wants to surround and build a Roster of Smart, Intelligent Players (similar to what Belicheck has done for Years)

This is a make or break year for Billy Davis….he has no excuses….you got some DB’s to work with and you already had a good front seven now even better with Kiko….and he has depth everywhere now…..No excuses for Billy he better put us in top ten in D this year

I don’t seemingly feel that as we are now constituted ,we are better than last year ..we have a huge hole at qb..at best an unknown health status…we have O lineman that last year did very little to distinguish themselves, and did nothing to increase the competition at that position(s). Our backend has been elevated if for no other reason ,subtraction,by,addittion…the running back position will be reliant on the, aforementioned O line..I sense that wide outs will have to all contribute to constitute an upgrade over last seasons. We need coach up the back end to compete in the even tougher NFC east wide out class. The draft yielded something we never had before …clarity…these are chips picks ,let’s assume he’s done his due diligences ,and it yields results exceeding all our expectations.I just feel he still needs learn to navigate through the boards, more deftly.

Guys need to stop bitching….I would rather have a questionable 3rd rounder who might pan out than a 1st rd bust like Marcus Smith and Danny Watkins any day.

This may turn out to be a very good draft with Chip guys, moving the team to the next level.

I’m glad we didn’t build on a losing core….Reid got fired because he went 4-12 with the same players guys hear are bitching about being cut, so that tels me the Eagles could be even more successful if Chip uses his players instead of leftovers who didn’t win a damn thing under Reid.

I like our new receiver better than Maclin…He’s more durable, run crisp routes and make YAC….even break tackles.

Our defensive secondary will be vastly improved, and we’l coach up our undrafted offensive linemen to NFL level talent (Jason Peters was an undrafted prospect) Would you rather have an undrafted Jason Peters or a 1st round Danny Watkins?

Late round Offensive linemen can be coached up to starters in the NFL.

THis draft was perfect and I give Chip an A.
