Chip Kelly is Shaping The Mindset of His Football Team

ChipKellyOTA7You want to know what it is about Chip Kelly that has the entire NFL and a country of football fans excited about the Philadelphia Eagles.  It’s because Chip Kelly thinks differently than all the other coaches in the NFL.  Birds 24/7, which is an Eagles blog, appears in PhillyMag.com has an interesting article by Sheil Kapadia about how Kelly has adopted the thinking of Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck.  Kelly and the football team have immersed themselves in the “Growth Mindset”.  The following is part of that article.

When informed recently that copies of her book were circulating around the NovaCare Complex this offseason, Carol Dweck was thrilled.

The Stanford psychology professor has heard the name Chip Kelly before, but she knows very little about him. Kelly and his coaching staff, however, are very familiar with Dweck. They’ve been using her 2007 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, as a teaching tool all offseason. The book focuses on the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.

“A growth mindset is the belief that people can develop their talents and abilities,” Dweck said during a phone interview with Birds 24/7.

I concur with Dweck’s thinking and Kelly’s effort to shape the mindset of the entire Eagles football team.  You’ve got to believe that your workouts, eating habits, studying and focus will help you be a better football player.  That’s why players buy in and commit to the arduous tasks.  I know in my time around football throughout college and in the NFL, the culture and mindset of a team had a major affect on the success or failure of the organization.

There’s no doubt that thinking the proper way is part of making a football team better.

None of that shit matters unless he wins football games.

This is the pros. Not college. And if you think you’re going to win with subpar talent because the “believe” really, REALLY hard…well I got some land in Florida to sell you.

Let’s just hope it all works out.

The problem with this psychology analysis ,is that knees don’t bend backwards ..or when 300 pounds are piled on an ACL s positive thinking don’t mean JACK..guys who allegedly aren’t on the same page philosophically ,are jettisoned ,but where is the plan B?. It’s fine and good to purge the anti-players..Djax..shady..Mathis..but you’d better have equally talented players ..positive thinking doesn’t win football games ..talent trumps all..
