Thoughts From Eagles-Ravens

samGood Showing For Bradford

Bradford looked pretty poised in the pocket for a guy who hadn’t played in almost two years. He’s got a great arm, and was able to air the ball out pretty effortlessly. It will be exciting to see what he’ll be able to do once his timing improves.

Bradford showed a little rust early in the game. He had Riley Cooper breaking open and threw the ball over Cooper’s head, and also threw a little too hard on a shorter pass attempt to Darren Sproles. He did make several nice throws, including a strike to Jordan Matthews on a third and five that would set up a Ryan Mathews touchdown run.

Bradford took several shots from the Baltimore, including what many consider to be a cheap shot from Terrell Suggs on a running play. However, he was able to get up after both shots.

Bradford would play just one series, but I thought it was a pretty good showing for the team’s new starting quarterback.

Offense

  • DeMarco Murray made his Eagles’ debut, taking five carries for 17 yards and a touchdown. He began the game with a good, hard seven-yard run.
  • Drops may be the one chink in Nelson Agholor’s armor right now. Agholor dropped another catchable pass from Bradford on the team’s opening drive. The first-round pick had a good showing on the team’s first drive in the second quarter. Agholor made two tough catches to provide the team with first downs and set up another red-zone chance.
  • Ryan Mathews went untouched for a 14-yard touchdown run on the team’s opening drive. Mathews got a great block from Jason Peters on the play.
  • Lane Johnson was called for a holding penalty on Baltimore’s top pass rusher Elvis Dumervill.
  • Andrew Gardner missed a block on the team’s opening drive that allowed C.J. Mosley to break up a DeMarco Murray run for a loss.
  • Seyi Ajirotutu got a look with the first team on the opening drive, and was targeted by Bradford on a play.
  • Mark Sanchez gave a better effort in his second appearance, going 14/20 for 118 yards. He did however miss a couple of throws, including one to Jeff Maehl in the redzone that would have been a touchdown.
  • Matt Barkley had another pretty good showing, going 6/14 for 86 yards. Barkley once again showed a good command of the offense, and was able to lead the team on two scoring drives that resulted in field goals during the third quarter.
  • Matt Tobin, playing left tackle in the second quarter, was beat by Terrell Suggs for a sack.
  • Trey Burton made a tough catch on a third and five to extend a drive in the second quarter.
  • Julian Vandervelde was flagged for a hold that negated a Jordan Matthews touchdown.
  • John Moffitt missed a block on Arthur Brown that led to a sack on Matt Barkley.
  • I think Raheem Mostert may actually be a better pure runner than Kenjon Barner. However, Barner’s special teams abilities will give him the edge if the team keeps a fourth running back.
  • Tim Tebow went just 2/5 for 13 yards, but looked good running the ball on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Defense

  • The Eagles’ defense struggled to stop the run early in the game. Justin Forsett opened the game with a 14-yard run, and three plays later the team was unable to stop the Ravens on a fourth and one.
  • The pass defense however got a strong start thanks to a great play by Nolan Carroll and Walter Thurmond. Carroll had excellent coverage on a deep ball thrown by Flacco, and was able to bat the ball into the arms of Thurmond, who went for a 36-yard return.
  • On Baltimore’s second series, Byron Maxwell received an easy interception on an overthrown ball by Flacco which set up the Eagles with another short field.
  • Remind me again why couldn’t Billy Davis and Chip Kelly give Carroll or Brandon Boykin an opportunity to start over Bradley Fletcher?
  • Brad Jones got some work at outside linebacker, and picked up a sack on a play where Matt Schaub fell over after the snap.
  • Newly acquired linebacker Deonte Skinner got some early reps with the first team defense.
  • Brandon Bair got his hands up and batted down a Matt Schaub pass in the second quarter.
  • Vinny Curry struggled a bit to recognize some play action fakes when he was given reps at outside linebacker.
  • Najee Goode dropped what should have been an interception from Schaub at the two-minute warning at the end of the first half.

Special Teams

  • Bryan Braman had an impressive open field tackle on the opening kickoff. Braman stopped Asa Jackson inside the 20-yard line.
  • Kenjon Barner has got to make this team. Barner looked great on a 68-yard punt return that he was able to take to the house for a touchdown, his second punt return in as many games.
  • Cody Parkey missed a 55-yard kick at the half.

Remember on Nagee’s Goode Dropped Int on that 4th down play is that he actually saved the Eagles 5-8 yards but not making that diving Int.. As a Defender on a 4th Down Pass, I was always taught to knock the ball down since your Offense is taking over at the line of scrimmage anyways?

If your losing the Game then go for a Pick 6…but chances are the other Team is passing on a 4th Down since they are the Team that’s losing.. Just bat the ball down so it can’t be caught and let your offense take over from the previous line of scrimmage ..I see a few Int’s every Season on 4th Dows on Hail Mary or Deep Routes which is stupid and where you just cost your Team 30-40-50 Yards of Field Position..

Hail Mary and deep balls maybe, remember an nfl player player is a private company, he gets paid on stats.

The most impressive aspects of the game from my vantage ,were the contrast in discipline (penalties) ,that the Ravens were committing.I attribute that to the pace of the Eagles offense and the Ravens inability to react to the formations that were being seen .All of this after a week of practice ,which showed me the ability of this team to throw different looks and Chips offensive schemes.Sam taking hits is the one albatross, which is again why having made a priority of the O line makes this team vulnerable. In retrospect Agholor may be a luxury at the expense of an O lineman picked high in the draft .The gamble may play out,i certainally hope so.Tebow is not seeing the field and seems hellbent on pulling the ball down .I wonder if that’s by design? If he makes the team will he be a red zone weapon, requiring a spy ,and will that ultimately open up a receiver ?If murray is a downhill runner do we need that at all at goal line? Its obvious the defense has to do a better job at run gap responsibilities,Id expect having the starting linebackers in ,will be a remedy ,immediately felt.We are seeing a trend in these games at home,we are the better conditioned ,disciplined team and we are seeing the depth of this roster. All in all ,Green bay on the road will be a better barometer ,but so far health and dominance at home are so very encouraging.

I am very impressed by the Eagles discipline…yet they showed a little too much discipline in not going after Suggs…they need to establish a little nastiness on that offensive line….and letting your QB get hit with a cheap shot and then complaining after the game about it is bull…there should have been a confrontation.
If you remember the Andy Reid’s teams especially in the later year they were always making dumb penalties and poor clock management. Under Chip Kelly the team is not always jumping oftsides, holding and a bunch of other stupid plays consistently.
After these two preseason games, while its still earlier-we have to admit…the team looks good and Kelly seems to have made the right moves!!

Game 3 firstHalf should be a nice test for the Eagles
Facing Rodgers, Lacy, Nelson,Cobb & Adams for a Full Half should be a very good indicator of how the Eagles new look Secondary and Pass Rush are playing..
Do note that the 1st Game the Colts had their Top 2 WR’s, Top TE & RB all on the sidelines while Luck took only 8-10 Snaps..
The Ravens have a very young & inexperienced WR Corp outside of Steve Smith and played short-handed on their OL as 3 Starters were injured and not even Playing and then had 2-3 other OL go down during the game as they scrambled with OL playing out of position etc,etc..
Bottom line is the Eaglesare Well Coaches, Well Conditioned and Deep across most Position Groups with lots of hungry young Players who playing hard, fast & smart so far which bodes well for the Regular Season..

Denny, your absolutely right…the QB looked very good for a guy who hasn’t played. No major mistakes, no throwing the ball up for grabs, leads the team right down the field …and got him out of the game.
I have a strong feeling that we now finally have a QB!

I’m laughing my ass off looking at the Rams….

Foles is garbage!

His first pass was a pick six thrown off the back foot.

Chip knew exactly what h was doing trading that bum!

They may be thinking about giving Keenum the starting job…same Nick we saw in Philly…nervous, jittery, throwing off of his back foot!

Foles was three-of-seven for 18 yards with a pick and no touchdowns for a rating of 10.7…..against a bum ass Titans defense.

Songs,

You have to let go of Nick Foles – he is a thing of the past in Philadelphia.

Maybe you were right all along about Foles. Maybe he sucks worse than any QB in the NFL, but you have to turn your attention to current Eagles players that you hate. No one wants to argue with you about former players.

Nick Foles put up 2 stinkers so far in the preseason. He is in trouble with that OL. Jeff Fisher can’t survive this 2015. How long does his rebuild go?
Joe Flacco looked worse though.

Joe Flacco’s resume allows him to throw up a bad performance in the preseason, he has a super bowl ring and a history of performing at a high level in high pressure situations. Foles and Flacco should not be mentioned in the same breath.
The Rams should take a look at Keenum, even when Foles has had time he has made some poor passes. That pick last night was not on the o line, that was 100% on Nick.

Excellent point, Eagleshaslanded…the time is coming…either the haters of Coach Kelly -Paulman, mhenski, vinniethevictor, and others will be proven right and all of the oft-season moves by Kelly were terrible and wrong…or the haters will be proven wrong and have to eat their crow.
Its safe to say now…to the delight of true Eagles fans…they better warm that crow up!!

Do note that Flacco and Ravens had 3 OL Starters not even suited for the Game and then 2 had OL who were injured early on… No Excuses, but Ravens OL was back-up material right from the get go.. Also, look at the Ravens WR/TE’s.. besides WR Steve Smith, who else on that WR Corp has 3 Years Experience in the NFL ? The Ravens Offense is going to struggle this Season early on..

Fitzpatrick, Hoyer, McCown, Kapernick, RG3 — the worst of the worst
Winston, Bortles, Carr, Mariotta, Taylor – young but probably bottom third.
Foles, Cutler and Eli Manning – bad teams will sink these 3

As bad as they have been for many reasons, Kapernick has multiple playoff appearances and wins as well as a SB appearance, RG knee has a playoff win. Nick has not come close to Kaps achievements nor has he won a playoff game which RG3 has, so I think Nick needs to be in that worst of the worst category if Kap and RG3 does. I do not believe Kap should be in there though. RG3 is his own worst enemy, he has the talent, his head is not in the game.

Bears QB Jay Cutler will bounce back and have his Best Season in a while
HC John Fox won’t allow Cutler to drop back 40-45 Times a sling it around..
The Bears will pound the Rock with RB’s Forte and Rookie RB Langford who has looked great this Preseason and have Cutler throw a lot of short/safe Passes and the occasional bomb to big WR Alshon Jeffrey
Bears RB Matt Forte is coming into his Contract Year and will put up a monster season if he remains healthy
Cutler is one of the those QB’s when Expectations are placed on him, he shrinks and plays poorly and now that everyone has about written him off, he’ll likely bounce back with a decent to good Season..

Typical Reading Comprehension Issues from Hinski..
Where did I say Cutler is coming off his Best Season ?
I simply stated that Cutler will have a nice bounce back Season as HC John
Fox will pull the reigns in on him so he can’t screw up as often as the Bears will become a more run dominated Offense which is probably a good thing for the Bears Team and for Cutler Personally …
Go swimming somewhere else Bird-Brain Hinski…

So Hinski, Are you saying Cutler in 2014 was his best NFL Season and better than his 2008 Season ? Are you saying this ?
QBR Rating in 2008 was 67 while in 2014 it was a 53
He passed for 4500 Yards with 25 TD’s & 18 Int’s in 2008 with a 7.3 Avg Yard per Pass
In 2014 he passed for 3800 Yards with 28 TD’s & 18 TDs for 6.8 Avg Yard per pass and was Benched by his Coach as they lost Confidence in him for Jimmy Clausen …How is 2014 better than 2008 ?

Brandon Schereff didn’t look good, Greg Robinson and Jake Matthews didn’t look good last year. Fischer and Joeckell have yet to look good. A lot of whiffs with High draft picks on OL recently.

Lane Johnson has definitely panned out better than Fisher and Joeckel and at this time, Johnson has been the better lineman out of the three.

Lane Johnson by far has outplayed the other OT in his Draft Class
Eric Fisher has been brutal as they have moved him around from RT to LT back to RT… Joeckel wis playing better and did miss most of his Rookie Season due to Injury so he’s just getting his confidence/techniques down..
Jake Matthews of the Falcons came on and improved as last Season went along, he started out at RT and then was forced to LT as Falcons had injuries and he’s mentally tough enough to keep working and improving
Greg Robinson looks lost.. I am not sure who the Rams OL Coach is but they have a lot of High Draft Picks on that Roster over the last few Drafts for them to look so bad as a Unit..
Scherff has a ways to go.. Playing in the mediocre Big 10 while at Iowa has not prepared him against the Athletes he will face in the NFL Game in and Game out but he’s a tough and smart Player and will get better and figure it out
