Jordan Hicks Made Biggest Play Of 2015

JordanHicksvsCowboys2You can complain about some of the moves Chip Kelly made this off season, but there is one move that we must give him and his player evaluation team all kinds of credit for making.  I’m talking about the drafting of inside linebacker Jordan Hicks in the third round.  Hicks made a play earlier this season, that is the number one reason, the Eagles are still in position to go to the playoffs.

Like everybody else, I thought the Birds should have addressed their needs on the offensive line, when they grabbed Hicks in the third round.  Little did I know that they were drafting the player, who would make their biggest play of the year.

I had no idea he would blossom like he has because I addressed a group of linebackers at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and Hicks was amongst that group.  I talked to them about staying relaxed and being confident as they went through the Combine.  I was with Ed Reynolds Sr. a former NFL linebacker, who is the father of Ed Reynolds Jr., who is a safety on the Eagles practice squad.   We talked about being diligent about the football career now that they were probably going to be drafted in the NFL.  We talked about preparation and focusing on football.  I didn’t know Hicks was so sharp that he was the one who should have been giving the talk.

Anyway, I remember him and Mychal Kendricks’ brother Eric, who I was joking with about him living up to his brother’s standards.  The Panthers’ Shaq Thompson, who asked me a bunch of questions about whether he should play linebacker or safety. It was a talented group, but I had no idea that Hicks was going to shine like he has.

Hicks, who is lost for the season because of a torn pectoral muscle made the biggest play of the season for the Birds.  He sacked Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, slammed him to the ground and fell on him.  On that play, Romo broke his left collarbone and it’s probably the only reason the Birds, who are 4-4, still have a great chance of making the playoffs.

With a healthy Romo, the Cowboys would probably have a least a two-game lead in the NFC East. Their defense has played well, and their running game has been decent, but their quarterback play has been awful and that’s the reason they’re probably no longer in the hunt for a playoff spot.  They’ve lost six games in a row and it’s all because of the injury to Romo.

On top of making the biggest play in the season, Hicks has already recovered three fumbles because the kid is always around the football.

He has picked off two passes and that interception that he took to the house last Sunday night was a huge play in that game.  Think about that play.  The Cowboys had control of the game and were driving the ball before he made that play.  It was one of the biggest, if not the biggest plays of the game.

Despite that huge play, it pales in comparison to that play he made earlier in the season against the Cowboys.  If the Birds make the playoffs, remember it was the sacking of Romo that gave them the chance to make the playoffs. Also give Chip Kelly credit for drafting Jordan Hicks.

G Cobb .it really does illuminate ,that you do your due diligence and don’t draft for need (as AR) seemed to do..They trusted there board ,and we as fans have a keeper ..lest we not forget the “in chip we trust.”we (myself) included want to get instant gratification.. Football is a methodical game ..slow and steady for 16 weeks..and try to play your best ball ,when the trees are barren of leaves

Its the NFL and you never know about how any Draft Picks are going to Pan Out.. 99.9% of Eagles Fans thought WR Ahgolor would have a very Productive Season followed by CB Eric Rowe from this Draft Class, and both struggled to get onto and stay on the field and make contributions..
When you think about it, it’s only the Early Season Injuries to the the ILB’s with D Ryans, M Kendricks and K Alonso that Jordan Hicks was even activated on Game Days early to get the chance to Play.. Kudos to him for learning the Playbook , being Prepared and giving the Coach’s and other Teammates the Confidence in Him to go out and Play.. Now that he’s out for the remainder of the Season, the Veteran’s will have to pick-up the slack

Time to start giving Chip and his staff credit where credit is due. Our new GM and coach has had 3 very good drafts the last 3 years. It’s still to early to judge I know, but from the looks of it we have had very good starting caliber players from every draft since Chip arrived.

Remember those 2010,2011 drafts? Sweet LORD. Has a team in the history of the NFL ever had 2 drafts that bad back to back?

I will give him Ryan Mathews too. and probably Thurmond.

Juries out on Bradford. He needs to do it in more than one game to prove anything.

Agholor looks like a project which is not what you want in a 1st round pick.
Offensive line was weakened.
Maxwell contract is god awful
Murray jury is out, but I think that would have been just as good if not better with Mathews full time and another secondary back.

As a prism of his moves ;they can’t be judged until given the time necessary to integrate all the moving pieces. As we enter game 9 we now see what has been accomplished.his record @4_4..is the bottom line.what is up for discussion; is as to wether he had a cohesive plan..it won’t be fair to judge him until after the giant game ..sitting where he’s at , he’s in position to run the table in the next 3 games..that positions him in enabling him to go 3-2 to finish again at 10-6..running the table is critical to accomplish that..and we should be favored to do just that..If we do it; and how we do it..that’s what we all have ..had we lost to dallas.any hope would be gone..so I’ll take 3 in a row..and roll into the back 5..

True Bugs…

Matthews seems to be a solid fit in the offense. Of course Chip has the input of his position coaches and the coordinators, but the Matthews and Murray moves may have been even more him, than anyone else but yet -questionable. But can’t argue with having the RB depth. Although we loss a pro bowl RB, we gained 2…Murray appears to be coming around, but mainly because of the O Line has progressed since the start.

But to the degree the O Line has been weakened has been a miss on his part. A Big Miss, that has impacted all of his offensive moves. The RB, WR and the QB position. Bring in a QB that hasn’t played in 2 season and that has suffered major injuries and put him behind a weak O Line…not a recipe for success…

Thurmond was a good pick up and the defense has been solid this season. You know I’m one of Davis biggest critics, but Davis and Kelly did a solid job on setting up this defense. Davis has been doing a pretty good job..

But there’s something I just haven’t quite figured out yet…Is this Eagles team average or just under achieving? what do you think?

I have been wondering the same thing. Is the offense with a lot of new parts getting to know each other. Bradford shaking off the rust?

The defense has played well overall, but I am concerned about the run defense as they were really gashed the last couple of weeks. Even in the Giants game Jennings was getting really good yards until the Giants kind of gave up on the run when they got behind. I think that the run defense has been overrated a little overall the last year and a half because it has been really easy to throw against this defense. I am also worried about the pass rush. They are still lettting too many teams convert 3rd down conversions.

My problem with Murray is this. They are paying him what 8 or 9 million. I look at adding a couple million to that amount and then you have Maclin back. I know that 11 million is way too much for Maclin, but even if Mathews build off of this last game, they still have no secondary threat. Agholor looks like a non factor this year.

The offense line thing is a bit of a question mark, because it is supposed to be so essential to his offenses to have athletic OL. I honestly think that he needs to be drafting OL every year or signing young FA replacements. I also think that it still doesn’t seem like Kelly is utilizing all of his weapons effectively. Ertz and Celek are far too underutilized and so is Sproles. I would like to see him on the field more.

I think that my only answer is that they are underachieving, but probably also a little more average then they were last year after losing the HR hitters in Maclin and McCoy.

I agree with you bugs ..I’m also aware we are wanting instant gratification ;it’s all a process.feeling out new personell was chips plate that he constructed..he knew there was a time table element involved.now we’ve seen what is still in week 9 a work in progress. The red zone efficiencies have been better.the kicker..better..the dual threat at wide receiver is an obvious issue..we don’t have that ; on a consistent basis.we are smart as fans..agholor..huff..cooper and austin.aint making anybody shake in there boots..unless they’re cowboy boots. .we need start games with consecutive first downs to gain momentum and avoid playing and exerting energies to play just to catch up..both sides of the ball..we go 3 and out and then create a deficit
.that has to be cleaned up..that’s coaching..he’s calling still wide east west plays ..he still is running a system for last year’s personell ..

Bugs and Desert…you are both on point with your comments. I didn’t want to talk about the defense against the run, was just trying to be positive and give Davis some credit…The pass rush or lack there of, is concerning..but I enjoyed seeing Kendricks and Barwin get in on some sacks this past weekend. I think a lot more can be had with the LB’s if the DC uses them correctly…

I’m also leaning more toward this team under achieving thus far, the team still has very capable players at skill positions. A defense that has been competing. A secondary that isn’t getting smoked down field.

I’d like to see Sproles get in the slot a little more often, put some pressure on the opposing defenses…Shit, go with a split back set with Sproles in the slot. Since our WR’s aren’t scaring anyone, utilize the weapons we do have.

A Couple of Interesting Stats pertaining on the Eagles Offense and particularly the play of the Offensive Line..

1) Sacks Allowed – Eagles have given up 14 Total Sacks which is 10th Best out of 32 Teams and again, with a QB in Sam Bradford who is not going to run away and scramble from Pressure so I think this is pretty darn good

2) Rushing Yards per Game — Eagles Average 122 Yards per Game Rushing which is Ranked 11th out of 32 Teams after 8 Games and remember how poorly they did in their first 2 Games when the Season Started..

Regardless of what many Fans believe, when Grading Offensive Lines
the Rushing Yards Per Game Average, Sacks Allowed and Penalties are all important Stats to help Determine the very Good to Average to Bad O/Lines..
To say the Eagles OL is Bad halfway into the Season is simply not an accurate statement based on the Stats this Offense has produced..

The sacks allowed stat is overrated with this offense. Chip isn’t calling deep routes on a consistent basis…how many games have we complained about Bradford taking the check down or throwing to the flat…or Chip calling a WR screen. Mainly calling those type of plays because he knows the line won’t hold up on the pass rush…

I agree RT777 about the heavy Volume of shorter Pass-Routes for Bradford and especially the first 5-6 Games but the last 2 Games have seen some more intermediate Routes as Bradford as gained Confidence and Rhythm..
But if you would have asked me 2 months ago would the Eagles OL hold up with immobile QB Sam Bradford coming off 2 Missed Seasons due to Knee Surgery and would have only given up an average of 1.75 Sacks per Game,
I would have taken that to the Bank, bottom line, this Eagles OL has played better than expected in my opinion.. Its the QB Play and WR Play that’s been lacking when looking at the Season in totality up to this point..
Bradford has played much better the last 2 Weeks, but the WR Corp needs to step up and come alive for besides Jordan Matthews, there is no one else on the outside making any Plays or making the Defenses scramble to cover
Hopefully with the next 3 Opponents in the Dolphins,TB Bucs and Lions all struggling Defensively, the Eagles should be able to remain in a good Rhythm for their 5 Game Stretch Drive.. With their average Start of 4-4, they are in not in position to drop any NFC Conference Games here on out..

Speaking in the terms in which you speak of Paul, can’t disagree with you. O Line has played better since the 1st two games, but that is also a reflection of the play calling and even Bradford making some smart decisions…not every under neath throw has been smart, not saying that…But the low number of sacks also has to do with the QB getting the ball out quick…

I am worried about the D. I think they’re stats are a little inflated right now.

Got 2 picks off Ryan who threw for 300 and 2….but then its been Weeden, Eli, Fitzpatrick before London, Cousins, Newton, Cassel.

Not exactly a murderers row of QB talent. Played well enough against Brees led Saints….but remember that was another donut with Saints coming off an OT win in primetime and heading into a divisional game vs Atlanta.

But of larger concern is how the Birds have failed to capitalize on a schedule that has bent over backwards to provide them opportunities.

This Eagles sched could not have broken any better. Its impossible to get more “freebies” than they’ve had.

Atlanta in game one with an entirely knew coaching staff
Pre-London vs Jets
Big Donut for the Saints
Game an a half sans Romo.

Even the Carolina game saw them coming off a emotional win against their Nemisis Seattle. They came out flat vs Birds with Newton throwing 3 picks.

These have been gifts….backup QBs, 3rd string QBs, donut games, pre-London games, 3 ints games……

You dream of getting a schedule that sets up the way the Eagles’ has.

And they haven’t taken advantage.

Now there are 3 more creampuffs in a row here…They will be heavy favourites in all 3 and better come away with 3 wins.

We’ll we will have to agree to disagree on this one Z…The O line may have improved but the start of the season, the O Line was very suspect…Even on some intermediate calls, Bradford is feeling the pressure and waiting to last possible second to release the ball…Proof of that was evident in the past game..They haven’t turned the corner just yet…still have a lot of things to clean up…Bradford confidence in the protection and Kelly play calling shows the O Line concerns on game day….

Wait until they get Dwan Edwards back DE Charles Johnson both due back in2 Weeks.. The Panthers with now have Depth across their DL
With DT’s Short, Lotuleile & Edwards all Rotating
The DE’s Charles Johnson, Kony Ealy, Jared Allen & Mario Addison all Rotating which may give them one of the Deepest DL’s in all the NFL which is crucial to any Deep Playoff Run as we’ve seen in recent years…

Good points G…As much as Kelly as been bashed for his moves as a General Manager the reality is that he has improved the defense. The corners and safeties are much better than last year, he drafted Hicks who was playing at an All-Pro level.
Kelly deserves credit for that!
As to the offensive, The offensive line is jelling…you can see their improvement from the first Dallas game where they only got 7 rushing yards for the game to this one where they dominated without their best offensive lineman! The Quarterback over the last two weeks has shown that he has shook off the rust, we see the intestinal fortitude of the QB in coming through in a tough situation, with the whole city bashing him….he stepped up!
This tells me a whole lot about Sam Bradford and I am extremely confident in my early predictions about the QB!
The QB move was the right move!
Which leads me to note that we should ignore Vinniedaloser’s contentions that would have us put asterisks on our wins..the psycho-babble about pre-London Jets win or other teams injuries…all of that is irrelevant. Every team in the league can have a bunch of excuses, Vegas trends, and bunch of other bull to explain away their wins and losses…who cares
Anyone looking at the Eagles now in comparison to the beginning of the year sees a team that is getting better as the season progresses

I had them has pretenders early in the year bc they had played nobody with more than 1 win in there first 5 games. They did bully our dline during certain phases of the game allowing Jonathan’s Stewart to have a nicer game more than any rb this defense had faced in a long time. Of course Koolidiot likes the guy. He’s never met a “poser” he didn’t like. And that’s all Newton is. A poser.

And he better keep on posing, because he’s not winning a SB as long as he keeps playing the way he does.

Put Cam Newton on Detroit and they are 0-8. Put him on 2/3rds of NFL teams and you’d have never heard of him.

52% completion %?????

3.7% int %????

Abysmal.

As usual, Koolidiot concentrating more on the superman poses after gaining a yard on 4th and 1.

Guy has absolutely terrible mechanics. Every throw is “all arm”. He has made no improvement in this area, and will come back to haunt him – shortening his career when his ability to run starts fading. Once he stops running, he’ll fall off a cliff

And do not discount the fact that the guy takes 10 hellacious hits every game. These add up. I don’t care how big he is. Guy gets beat to shit every single game (on purpose) and this will come home to roost by the end of the year. On pace for 150 carries???? That’s trading any hope of a long career for short term notoriety. Bad move.

The receivers are below average and the line is shoddy in pass protection. Cam carries that team. Was he just twiddling his thumbs when the Panthers were up by 3 scores against the Packers?

“the truth?”

The truth is Cam Newton is a 52% passer in a league that gives every advantage to the QB.

The truth is he has terrible mechanics, is all “arm throws” which will hurt his career. He is very inaccurate because he never, ever sets his feet.

You only hear about him because he can run, and in doing so, he opens himself up to ridiculous punishment. Have you actually watched him this year. Guy is being pounded weekly. That will ad up by the end of the season.

Like McNabb, his career will be cut short because the human body cannot take what he’s been taking and continue. It’ll break down, and hen it does he will fall off the cliff and quickly.

Put Cam Newton on 2/3 of the teams on the league and the only word you’d hear associated with his name is “bust”

skayne

November 13, 2015 4:50 pm

Put him on two-thirds of the teams in this league? You think they’ve built some juggernaut squad around him? The Carolina o-line has a bunch of formerly undrafted free agents starting on the o-line. Kelvin Benjamin is hurt, leaving him with only Greg Colsen as the only quality receiver at TE. Give him some talent and he would put up the nice pretty numbers that you like. The Panthers scored 37 in that game, and without STs or defensive scores, toe to toe against Aaron Rodgers. As I said, was Cam twiddling his thumbs while some other qb lead them to 37 points?

Two-thirds of the qbs in this league wouldn’t have the Panthers undefeated if they had the level of talent around them that Cam Newton does on offense.

When he likes the Quarterback-wins and losses are all that counts

When its a guy he doesn’t like wins and losses are irrelevant and he begins nitpicking around irrelevant ‘stats’ and constructing ridiculous criticisms

Ridiculous!

Cam Newton has his team at 7-0

He is a nightmare for opposing defenses with his running and passing abilities

He has made clutch throws and clutch plays to lead his team to wins

As noted, the Panthers are not filled with offensive talent around Cam

Yet is has them at 7-0!

He is starting to play more like Russell Wilson and intelligently assess when he should run or pass

He is big and physical yet he is not taking unnecessary hits

Cam Newton is taking the next step up this year where he belongs with the other big time QB’s in the league-Brady, Wilson, Rodgers, Newton fits right in with these guys this year

Like I said you cannot just look at his stats alone. He virtually has nothing at the WR position with Kelvin B going down. Watch the man play, he is making the right throw when it counts and is managing the game to perfection. He has gotten so much smarter on his pre snap reads and is also scrambling alot smarter by sliding, getting down or going out of bounds. Cam newton will scramble maybe 7-10 times a game, and they will all be times when he catches the defense slippin.

Paulman was right when he was saying we shouldnt take the Panthers lightly (Like I did) because Cam Newton was playing the smartest football of his career and that they are a well coached discipline football team that plays hard.

Granted we did force Cam to throw 3 ints that game. I really hope Philly meets Carolina in the postseason. It would be a different story with a confident hot Philly team. I feel that Philly is more talented at any major position then Carolina is(besides maybe one corner, and qb) and if it were not for all the dropped touchdowns, we are the only team to give them a loss this season

NFL News
Oakland Raiders Activate Safety Nate Allen to their Active Roster as he was injured in Week #1 but has been practicing for the last 2 weeks…
Wouldn’t it be crazy if the Raiders & Panthers both made the Super Bowl and the Starting Safeties were Nate Allen on the Raiders & Kurt Coleman for the Panthers..

Well he is late the Nate…after all…with those two safeties go with the “over” Pman ..best scenarios this weekend. ..starts with Gmen losing ..with a birds win ..cards or Hawks will lose ..id prefer see the Hawks out.”.have Oakland beating Minny ..pack should roll..vs toothless lions..we could very well crack the top 5 ..of pmans power ratings ..best scenarios in your estimation? If Eagles run the table in next 3 at 7-4 would be ?

Eagles are knocking on the Door for cracking Top 5 in NFC with another W
Falcons have come down to earth.. The Giants,Rams,Eagles, Seahawks are all .500 or so.. Who can get on a Roll put a Winning Streak together ..
The Eagles are positioned very well these next 3 Games and really should get
To 7-4 which probably puts them in the lead in the NFC East as the Giants have a tough finish, the Cardinals have a tough Schedule also…
When looking at Eagles Final 5 Games (At Pats, Home vs Cardinals, Bills & Redskins and then finish at the NY Giants) the Eagles are basically home the last month of the season with short Trips to Boston & Meadowlands and this could be a nice advantage over other Teams who have lots of traveling to do.. Especially as you get closer to Holidays, bad weather, etc, etc..
The key is beating the NFC Teams so if they Finish 10-6, the Eagles likely Win the NFC East, if they Finishat 9-7, then there is a good chance that it may get to tie-breakers
The Team I am concerned about are the damn Redskins who have the Saints,Panthers, Bears,Bills, Giants, Eagles & Cowboys twice so they will have opportunities to improve their Conference and NFC East Records..
Who knows if Tony Romo even returns in December, if Cowboys continue to lose, they very well could be eliminated by the time he returns after Thanksgiving then if your the Cowboys, does it even make send bringing him back if they are 2-8 or 2-9 ?
The Redskins are Physical, get D-Jax back which should openuptheir Offense up more… Their Secondary stillsucks, but offensively they will score Points
If Eagles Win remaining 5 NFC Games and win just 1 of 3 AFC Contest’s then they are in…

The eagles have no shot, absolutely none while bradford is the qb, put Sanchez in the odds increase dramatically

That’s where your wrong Jake. Because an improving Sam Bradford in This division does have a shot. And when you get into the postseason, it is any ones game this year. Ask the NY giants who have 2 superbowl rings, and the Arizona Cardinals who came away just short, because of that James Harrison pick 6 which is probably the greatest play in SB history
