Chip Kelly Reportedly Told Eagles He’s Staying

ChipKelly3On Monday, Chip Kelly was asked at his press conference whether or not he felt the need to assure the players that the rumors of him going back to college were untrue.

Kelly responded with his typical, smug answer that he essentially felt it unnecessary to address the team to shoot down rumors.

And sure enough, the embattled head coach flip-flopped on that position, opting to address the team on Tuesday and tell them that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Per Jeff McLane, Kelly told the players that he would remain in Philadelphia, “as long as the Eagles would have him.”

The end of that statement is very interesting.

While Kelly basically confirmed that he would not leave the Eagles of his own accord, he left the door open for the possibility of something else to happen towards the end of the season. Chip and Jeffrey Lurie obviously communicate regularly to some degree, and its possible that Kelly’s wording at the end of that statement is an indication that his status with the team beyond this season is still cloudy.

Meanwhile, Crossing Broad’s Kyle Scott has stated that he’s received word from several sources that Kelly and Jeffrey Lurie have a “mutual agreement” in place to part ways at the end of the season.

The Eagles are such a mess right now, and this isn’t the last we’ll hear about speculation regarding Kelly’s future. At this point, nothing would surprise me.

Hopefully that “mutual agreement” will get our 2nd round pick back via Tennessee. I’m not so sure anyone in the Eagles organization is capable of pulling off that kind of snow job………..

Titans are trending to have the 1st or 2nd Pick of the Draft in 2016 so their 2nd Rounder is the #33 or #34 Player Selected in 2016 which is almost like a late 1st Rounder
Owner Lurie want out of Kellys Contract too so it’s a Win-Win For Both Clubs
Take any close deal for Chip and move forward
Hire Sean McDermott as HC and keep Shurmur as OC/Asst Head Coach and let Shurmur handle the Offense while McDermott focus’s on rebuilding the Eagles Defense back to a 4-3
(b Graham and C Barwin become hand on the ground Pass-Rushers while Kiko Alonso & Kendricks become the Sam & WILL LB’s with Hicks the MIKE LB
Add another DT,CB – Move Rowe to Safety, Re-Sign Thurmond and move him to Slot CB , have Shepard compete with New CB for Carroll’s Replacement
And start from there

no way is the Chipper getting an out and leaving town while the Eagles are stuck with another year of Sanchez plus multiple years of Murray and Maxwell. I want to see him scratching that neck every press conference squirming. If the birds are losing I want to see the architect answers those snarky loaded media questions every Sunday and Monday.

entertaining game –
Lakers are a really slow team. Kobe was awful in the 2nd half. As long as Kobe is on the court the Lakers have no chance to win. Sixers are not getting the Lakers 1st round pick. They are worse than the Sixers.

That would be the absolute worst, as of now, the Sixers would have the most ping pong balls in the tank. The Sixers will probably still have the worse record between them and the Lakers, I think Sam is hell bent on that. If the Lakers get the overall first pick and the Sixers have the worse record, the fix will be in.

well here is what i think kobe will obviously get hurt or even worse stay healthy and suck and all the teams will want to beat kobe on his last hurrah… the sixers will gel, brown will somehow get them on a ‘streak’, the nba doesn’t want to reward the sixers for the joke they are playing on the league and the fans… sixers will not get simmons. will draft another good but not franchise changing player, red shirt him, keep saric in Siberia and tank again. book it!

It is patently absurd to state that the Laker’s problem is kobe. It is equally absurd to suggest that the rest of the Lakers are worst than the Sixers, who are weekend pick up team outside of Nerlens and Jahlil without providing context. as much as I hate tanking, at the least the sixers excuse is a true lack of nba talent. What’s the lakers excuse? There isn’t a credible person who would suggest there starting 5 is worst than ours. Maybe Scott isn’t as good as advertised. maybe the West is truly twice as good as the east. maybe Brown would have produced more victories with a legit team like the lakers.

disagree. lakers/sixers will have top 2 most ping pong balls who knows what happens there although its extremely likely both get top 3 picks and we dont get lakers in that scenario but it will pay off eventually… suppose lakers get #1 pick and sixers #2 pick, i think lakers would have to think long and hard about a sixers offer of noel, our #2 pick, and their 1st round draft pick they us back to them… will see

regarding the other protected picks they are miamis (top 10 protect) and okc (lottery protected) and at its likely we get both of them but really who cares because they both gonna be shit picks

Lakers will trade Lou Williams before trade deadline for something. Kobe will eventually either get hurt or pretend to be hurt and stop suiting up.
Sixers will add Kendall Marshall and Tony Wroten and cut Phil Pressy and get instantly better. The Sixers will try to trade for a shooting guard who plays better defense than Cannan and Stauskas. they were rebuffed when attempting to sign Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler but it is obvious that is their number one priority.

His agent made that clear before the draft and nothing has changed. He never wanted to be apart of this Josh Harris and Sam Hinkie team and still doesn’t. Many gcobb posters believe that Okafor should be released from the team due to his using a racial epithet while drunk at a social event. HAC on the other hand realizes that the offensive term is part of everyday vernacular for young men on athletic teams. He should be suspended and get some sensitivity training… When that is over he should be welcomed back to the team as a young man that said something stupid. On the other hand his actual physical violence should be punished.
Those posters have been eerily quiet yet it was the same exact word used in eerily similar situations… I don’t understand that

Too many people like you don’t understand the Sixers plan. The Sixers don’t have their whole future resting on whether they get the first pick in this year’s draft. That’s specifically why Hinkie has positioned himself to pick multiple times in the first round over the next several years. You dramatically increase the odds of landing a top flight player by having multiple chances to pick in the draft, especially in the first round.

Even people on Hinkie’s side fail to realize that there is no plan to be bad on purpose. The plan is to build slowly and painstakingly because the NBA salary rules, more than any other league, preclude a team from achieving a quick turnaround by acquiring veterans through free agency or trade, because the only ones available through either avenue are marginal talents who will be too expensive for the marginal improvement they’ll provide.

The NBA, through the creation of the rookie wage scale and the “maximum salary”, have made it so that building through the draft is far more cost efficient. They’ve taken the salary risk of drafting players from college and placed it on the dozens of mid-tier free agents that can be had because a team wants to trade and get rid of them, or signed outright in free agency after the season.

The Nba is the only league with a “maximum salary”. LeBron James is a bargain at 23 mil a season. If he were a free agent with no maximum salary rule, the bidding would start at 40 mil a season. Bidding Sam Hinkie would have been able to join in if he were in the NFL. MLB, or NHL. In the NBA, the amount James can get from his own team and what he can get from others is set. So their is no real money decision for him to make. It’s all about who gives him the best chance to win.

The problem is that there is only one James, and about 15-20 other players who truly have a huge impact on their teams fortunes. But while there are only a limited amount of those players, there is a huge pool of players not as good, but who make similar money to the top stars of the sport. Committing money to these types of players is how your ruin your chances of winning. You can sign mid-tier free agents for a quick boost if you’re a bad team, but then you will quickly find yourself in ruins with the vast amounts of money committed to players who aren’t good enough. See the Nets, Lakers, and Knicks. And in the Nba, there is no get out of jail free by cutting players with no guaranteed money left like the NFL. If you broke it, you bought it.

The draft gives you a cheaper alternative to acquire star players, with their salaries at a fixed cost. And if you land one, you can control him for 7-9 years before he ever gets a crack at unrestricted free agency. Steph Curry is currently getting paid only 11mil annually because the current contract he’s on is the one for restricted free agents who’s rookie deal is expiring, making them restricted free agents, whose team has the right to match any offer. So once Okafor, Noel, or other players prove themselves worthy of further commitment, the Sixers will easily be able to sign them.

When Hinkie got here in 2013 his only marketable player was a mid-tier player at the deepest position in the NBA. If he had an elite player to build around, he would have done so. What he had was a losing team, who traded that year’s 1st round pick, a future first, and Nikola Vucevic , in a trade that included their best player in Andre Igoudala. All that was left was a bunch of players in the 3rd or 4th year of their soon to be expiring rookie deals that weren’t worth committing any more money to.

So he traded an average player for a king’s ransom of two first round picks to start the rebuilding process and acquire the assets in order to rebuild the franchise. Only Okafor and Embid are players acquired at the top of the draft due to the Sixers being bad. What we have is a team of good young players, all with two years or less of Nba experience, who can compete on a night-to-night basis but don’t have the seasoning on order to win on a consistent basis. Okafor and Noel give the team and offensive and defensive cornerstone. McConnell has shown to be a shrewd acquisition after the draft was over. Covington is another player with a future on the team. Richaun Holmes is one to watch out for, he just needs to come back from injury, and Christian Wood has a lot of skill in a 6-11 size body. It’s just going to take time. The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden in consecutive seasons and stunk all three years. They also traded away older vets to begin the rebuilding process. except Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis have had careers in the Nba that Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes, Thadeus Young, and Jrue Holliday could only dream of. People bitching about the “Process” seem to not understand that it has been barely over two years since Hinkie has been here. What four years are you referring to haveacigar? Hinkie got here in May 2013.

I understand it perfectly…The Noel draft he was 6 and that was a tank when they rightfully dumped mid tier players, the embid draft and the Okafor draft are three years of tanking, this year is number 4… A year or two of tanking is fine.., also it’s even better when the people in charge understand basketball and people…clearly Harris and Stinkie …
How the GM doesn’t come out and address the Okafor problem is behind me.. And you know why he doesn’t? Cause Okafor is an asset…not a person. This is going to be a disaster

skayne
skayne
December 5, 2015 4:43 pm

It wasn’t a tank to get rid of players who weren’t good. Hawes and Turner aren’t any good. They aren’t close to mid-tier. Thad Young was a rotation player, but somebody was willing to give you a first round pick and the chance to draft a difference maker, rather than somebody who’s the 9th or 10th best player on a playoff team. Because the Sixers almost completely depleted the team of good players/assests in the acquisition of Bynum, Hinkie sold high on Holliday in order to rebuild. Tanking is taking a team that was winning and deliberately playing lesser players on the team in order to lose. Getting rid of the players on a losing team who aren’t any good isn’t tanking. What he did that was great was actually get a return for many of those players.

Once again, learn how to count. Hinkie was hired in May 2013. There is no year 4, it’s barely into year 3.

Why doesn’t he talk to the media about Okafor? Because there’s nothing to discuss publicly. He’s a young man who’s made some mistakes, not some societal issue that’s affecting many people who need answers. He’s going to handle it internally, like any good GM would do. What the hell would he call a press conference for?

So the 76ers Tank for 4-5 Seasons and become among the worst Professional Sport Teams ever assembled for these 4-5 Seasons, then they stock up on Draft Picks & Assets and hope to start gelling as a Real Team with all these Young Players in Years # 5 thru #8/9/10 and hope that they do not lose any of their own Young Talent to Free -Agency or who simply tired of losing or due to injury or simply don’t end up Drafting or Developing these Players to be as good as everyone thought they would be..
Basically as a Fan, the 76ers are irrelevant for a decade and at my age (52) do you really think I’m excited about how the Team may look in 2021?
Shit, I don’t… It goes back to these Young Fans who don’t know the History of Team Work, Knowing your Roles, Stressing Fundamentals , etc, etc instead of thinking a couple of Top Draft Picks are going to land the next Lebron, S Curry, K Durant, K Bryant, etc

As I said, there is no tanking going on. He’s trying to build the team from the ground up so it can be sustainably good, like the Spurs. As I said in the long post, a player with the Sixers who was drafted by them can’t simply leave when they’re rookie deal is up. They become restricted free agents who sign with any team but the Sixers can match the contract. What usually happens is the player sighs a 4 or 5 year deal, playing with the team for 8 or 9 years before becoming unrestricted free agents.

The Sixers aren’t relying on any one prosepect to be the guy, that’s why they stockpile draft picks and turnover the last 4 or 5 spots on the roster in order to cheaply find the guys they will build around. Sam Hinkie doesn’t keep all his eggs in one basket.

As for knowing the history of the Sixers I’m 35. I was alive the last time they won a championship, and old enough to have seen many highlights and tributes to that team. Last time I checked, Doctor J and Moses Malone were all-time great players. Maurice Cheeks was an outstanding player who was overshadowed by the other two, but whose numbers stacks up against any of the great point guards of his era. In order to win a championship, you need elite players, there is no other way. It won’t take a decade, but it will take a few years to be a contending team.

Joel Embiid grew 2 inches – he is 7 foot 2 inches. If this guy gets on the court the Sixers hit the mother load – massive undeniable furious ferrous rebounder.

And Embiid’s Feet cannot withstand his 425 LB’s .. Embiid is a Fraud like Bynum was and doesn’t want to work hard to get into shape and Play..
i still say Embiid’s never Plays a Game for the 76ers just as I stated about Bynum early on ..
