Eagles Strike Out On McAdoo As Uninspiring Search Continues

JeffreyLurie1Well, the Philadelphia Eagles are still without a head coach.

Despite a flurry of reports on Wednesday that the team could be close to naming Ben McAdoo their head coach, word broke that the Giants would be retaining their offensive coordinator and promoting him to their head coaching spot.

According to reports, the Eagles were in on McAdoo until the end, and were prepared to hire him.

The Eagles have now failed to obtain two of their top coaching choices, missing out on both McAdoo and Adam Gase.

With no new interviews planned, the team’s remaining options are Tom Coughlin, Pat Shurmur, and Doug Pederson.

The coaching search that the Eagles have run over the last few weeks has been an absolute embarrassment.

Despite the notion that firing Chip Kelly before the season would give the teama “head start” on finding their next coach, the Eagles seem to be lagging behind the rest of the league more than ever. The slow pace of the search may have cost them an opportunity to land Gase. They handled Hue Jackson in a very bizarre manner, only putting in a call to the coveted coordinator at the last possible minute when it was already too late. Bright defensive minds like Sean McDermott and Paul Guenther have been ignored. Guys like Doug Pederson and Pat Shurmur are somehow serious candidates.

Here’s to hoping Jeffrey Lurie decides to reconsider the idea of no new interviews.

This reeks from a dysfunctionality from with in the organization .until they fix the inherent issuesand get serious in pursuit of finding a football GM ,who will have the autonomy and responsibility to pick the coach ,it’s all sadly the same old tune..

I wouldn’t say that yet.

Cleveland wanted Jackson because of his knowledge of Cinci and Pitt in their Division.

Mia wanted Gase presumably so he can save Tannehill (and they can have him)

NYG want McAdoo for continuity.

Eagles want Pederson to return to Reid tree of stability.

Makes sense all around.

Browns wanted Hue Jackson, just like the 49ers, did because of his work and reputation on the Offensive Side of the Ball and his Work with Young QB’s which Both the Browns and 49ers will likely be Drafting Young QB’s this Year in the 1st Round as they rebuild their Teams
Jackson is Energetic, Smart and Positive with High “Emotional Intelligence” which is perfect with a Young QB and Team, the fact that Jackson knows the
AFC North very well is just icing on the cake for the Browns

If it’s Shurmur I have a strong feeling he would bring back his boy Dick Jauron to run the defense which would certainly be a 4-3 defense.

If Shurmur is the guy they could have and would have hired him already. They’re nothing stopping them. Pederson however cannot be hired until at least Sunday. They have to wait…..but if they liked Shurmur then they would have announced it….if only to keep him away from other teams.

Because the demand for the guy is crazy right now.

“Struck out” Denny? C’mon, until someone in Twitter universe said the eagles were interested, no one was clamoring for this guy. Adam gase likely wanted full control and the Eagles didn’t want to go there after the Kelly fiasco. Who is Adam gase anyway? I agree, I’d Iike to see them talk to McDermott or another defense oriented guy, but by and large picking a head is a bit of a crap-shoot. Twitter rumors are just that, often whispers down the hall with perhaps a shred of truth, but mostly speculation, like “gase was a sure bet” or “Gruden is interested”. Be glad chip is gone and let this thing play out.

Denny,
Why did Kelly have to go? Didn’t the Tom Gamble situation force Kelly to take over the GM job? Didn’t Coughlin have a revolt going on concerning his personality prior to changing and winning a Super Bowl? If Coughlin could change why not Kelly. I know that everyone on this site thinks 7 wins is terrible but I think this team is heading for a 3 win season next year. Based on what I know looking from the outside this situation is Lurie fault by allow others to gang up on Kelly.

3 coaches that make the most amount of sense..Doug Pederson for his knowledge on the offensive side of the ball, learning from Reid, and his relationship with the Eagles organization, McDermott for having a great defense in Carolina for the past few seasons now, and his relationship with the Eagles organization, and Coughlin because players around the league respect the old timer. Regardless of what his record was this year or last year, Coughlin is still a great coach. Pat Shurmur wouldn’t be bad either, but i’m going with the 3 i just listed..

***Tom Coughlin will be named Eagles HC tomorrow and even possibly late this afternoon as they are currently going thru the Details of the Contract
Coughlin was very interested in the 49ers Job but honestly dos not want to rebuiild or move 3000 miles away from his Family…
He stated he has 3 Years left and wants to Win now which of course is
what Lurie wants to hear.. A win-win for everyone I guess and the Eagles will roll the short-term dice on a well-known and respected Coach with Tom Coughlin…
Expect Pat Shurmur and Sam Bradford to be retained while Coughlin brings in his own Defensive Coach’s as DC (Perry Jewell or Steve Spags or Harry Carson)
The Eagles will lock him up today so Tom Coughlin does not get a chance to make a deal with the 49ers..

I would have guessed that Doug Pederson would have been the Hire.. But now it appears that Lurie doesn’t want to look weak and reactionary and Hire a Coach that no one else was really interested or excited about and has decided to with a Big Name, Proven Winner in Tom Coughlin for the Short-Term…
Coughlin will get a very good Coaching Staff together for Defense,
Coughlin knows the NFC East and NFC as well as anyone..
Coughlin knows the PHilly/Northeast Region
Coughlin wants to Win and Win now and only expects to Coach another
3-4 Years so there is no real pressure about worrying about the Long-Term
Coughlin can get an Apartment/Condo in Philly while his Family remains only 2 hours away in North Jersey
COughlin lines to build his Offense with the Running Game & OL
Eagles have 3 Good RB’s and could develop a smash mouth Rushing Attack with better Blocking Schemes and a better OL
Coughlin likes the 4-3 Defense as a Base which is better suited for the Eagles Front 7

Players who will be happy if Tom Coughlin is Hired
Bradford, Murray, Matthews, Peters, Celek
Cox, Curry,M Kendricks (who will be moved to OLB)
Graham who will go back to DE
Maxwell who will get to play in more Zone Match-Ups
(CB’s & Safeties will learn to play more “Zone Match-Ups” than Man-Press Coverage but that should not be that big of an adjustment as Coughlin likes to mix and match his Coverages a lot)

Yep HAC, Hiring Pederson for Lurie is like going back to an old girlfriend where the familiarity is comforting but the long-range prospects are flawed .. If Lurie’s publicly stated Goal is to Win Championships, then Doug Pederson would not even be in the conversation for he has no track record of Winning or Developing any Team to Win anything…
Lurie is no dummy and has gotten wind that most Eagle Fans were not very excited about the prospects of Doug Pederson being named the Next HC and that’s the reality of the situation..
It is what it is …
Going back to find the next AR in 2016 is not a strategy to build a Winner in Today’s NFL…

His selection of his Coordinators, and coaches is going to be key to his success here. He needs someone who is innovative, yet can still coach smash mouth football, and we have to get back to being a dominating Defense.

This year s draft has to focus on the Offensive Line, and Pass Rushing Defenders

– 1st Priority being Offensive Line, and you know I want Hunter Henry on this team Paul, along with Yannick Ngorue, and Noah Spence, as well as Safety help with William Houston-Carson, and Tony Connor, and Cornerback depth with Maurice Canady, and James Bradberry.

But, I’m fine with Coughlin. I’d rather have him than Sean McDermott, Doug Pederson, or Pat Shermur…

They will try to keep shurmer and/or duce on the staff to take over in 3-4 years.

At this point…….whatever.

Coughlin was AWFUL this year. He lost several games for the Giants in the last few minutes with some highly suspect play calls. At one point, he told the running back NOT to score when a TD would have won the game.

My biggest issue with Coughlin is that his career with the Giants has been feast or famine. They only won playoff games the 2 seasons they won the Superbowl. The other 8 years they either missed the playoffs, or were one and done.

I’d go with Shurmer at this point.

New Eagles Mock Draft with Tom Coughlin as Coach and back to a meat and potato’s type of Draft.. Coughlin loves his DL and the Eagles will need to add a couple as they switch back to a 4-3,but Coughlin likes his DE’s to be long and lean..

1st Rd – #13 – DE Emmanuel Ogbah – Okla St 6-3 275lbs
3rd Rd – #77 – OT John Theus – Georgia 6-6 305lbs
3rd Rd – #80 – DT Chris Jones – Miss State 6-5 310lbs

Adding Ogbah and Jones to Cox,Logan,Curry,Graham along with Allen & Hart would give the Eagles a very Deep and Versatile DL

Starting Base 4-3 Line-Up
Curry,Cox, Logan, Graham

Back-Ups
Ogbah, Jones, Allen & Hart

The Key to Improving your Pass Defense is improving that Pass-Rush

Going with a 4-3 then allows to utilize their LB’s better

Base 4-3 LB Corps
SAM – C Barwin
MIKE – J Hicks
WILL – M Kendricks

Back-ups – Alonso & Ryans ..

I have read this (or something like this) 3x on this blog today:

“They are going to sign TC which means they will 100% be retaining bradford”

Why? Anyone who says something along those lines is operating in pure speculation.

Coughlin’s history is the EXACT OPPOSITE. Tom Coughlin, if anything, builds Long Term success. He’s not going to suddenly change his stripes. He’s a principled guy who will do what is best for the franchise….not him. You have to understand that about his character.

He will follow the exact same plan he followed 2x before.

His history says he will acquire a young QB AND an old “hold the fort” vet to start till mid-season when the young QB is ready to take over.

When he arrived in Jacksonville, the first thing he did was trade for a young (23) yr old mark Brunell to be the franchise QB. He also selected Steve buerlein who started the first year before handing the reins over to the young Qb that jax had invested in.

When he arrived in Ney York, the first thing he did was use the draft/trade for young Eli Manning to be the franchise QB. He also signed Kurt Warner who started the first year before handing the reins over to the young QB that NY had invested in.

When he arrives in Philly….he will do the exact same thing. He will follow the plan that has worked for him 2x before and may land him in the HoF. He will draft a young Qb and acquire an older vet to hold the fort while the young guy gets ready. Now this might be Bradford, but only as a placeholder. My feeling is he already has a placeholder on the roster named Marc Sanchez. Who better to go out, lose a couple games and take all the pressure off the new kid.

If its Coughlin…he will do what he believe s in. He will do what has been successful in the past. He will follow that formula. And, he will do what is in the best interests of the franchise long term, because he’s clearly a character guy.

if this were 3-5 Years Vinnie, I would agree with you, but not in 2016 and at age 69 when Coughlin wants to try to Win now and not worry about 5-7 Years down the Road.. He realized his Window is small, but he also realizes and probably better than anyone that the NFC East is totally up for Grabs right now and probably feels with a few tweaks with the Eagles Roster that he can return back to the Playoffs..I don’t believe Coughlin is interested in taking 3-5 Years of rebuilding the Eagles and grooming them for a good Future for down the road, He’s in it now to Win…
I am not saying he won’t Draft a QB, but if he retains Pat Shurmur which from all indications is part of a Lurie Requirement, then Bradford is back..
If Coughlin comes in with a new OC (Kevin Gilbride as example) then maybe Bradford is out of the picture

Jackson was also very excited to have the opportunity to help mold and build a Roster that he was going to have a very active part of selecting and putting together which he would not have with other Coaching Opportunities (Example – the 49ers,Giants,etc)

14 of the 16 Games are already decided for every Team regardless of where a Team Finishes in the Standings.. 2 Games verse Conference foes are determined by where you finish and by the 49ers finishing in last place means they will play the last Place Cowboys & Bears while the Cardinals who finished in 1st Place in the NF West will get the Redskins and Vikings..
So where you do finish, does have an impact with your next Season Schedule even if its 2 Games which in many cases can be the difference of making the Playoffs and Winning your Division or staying home for the Playoffs…
