The Pederson Plan: Defense

FletcherCoxvsSeahawks1Jim Schwartz wants the same thing as you and I, a defense that can dominate a football game. His outspoken personality and aggressive coaching style have the fan base excited for things to come.

The transition to a 4-3 scheme with wide nine variations will be an attack style defense. Cox, Curry, Graham, Logan and Barwin (Marcus Smith?) will be “unleashed” on opposing quarterbacks. One begins to salivate at the thought of how much havoc “could” be caused in 2016. Although rich with talent at the defensive line position, the deep pool of talent with the d-line in the upcoming draft will certainly appeal to add more weapons for Schwartz to work with.

I can’t envision Doug Pederson having much impact on the defense, minus the addition and subtraction of players to the roster. Pederson elected to go with Schwartz because of the trust factor. Pederson knows the veteran coach can adequately handle all responsibilities that come with the position.

Minus the defensive line and free safety Malcom Jenkins, there is plenty to speculate on with the linebackers and secondary positions.

The next player you hear mentioned is sophomore linebacker Jordan Hicks. The 2015 third round selection was impressive last season before getting injured. Remember when the Eagles ignored offensive line and drafted Hicks in the 3rd round when everyone believed depth at linebacker was the strength of the defense. Hicks proved he was NFL ready and credits the tutelage from former Eagle DeMeco Ryans for why the transition came natural to him.

Hicks at middle line-backer, Mychal Kendricks at weak side and Alonso at strong side, the group has a lot of “potential.”

Kiko Alonso was a huge disappointment in his first year as an Eagle. Minus the interception week one against the Falcons, his 2015 showing was forgettable. He looked completely undersized and lost on the football field when he was healthy enough to suit up. I don’t think Kiko was ever fully healthy last season. It’s difficult to predict how Alonso will do in a new defensive system, but I’m still holding out hope that his rookie season was not a fluke.

Kendricks, I would love nothing more to see the playmaker that we all witnessed during the 2013 season. It’s all about focusing on the strengths of Kendricks and not expecting him to player bigger than his physical stature. I feel Schwartz has a gift for knowing the areas his players excel at, and putting them in the best position to shine. 2016 could finally be the long awaited Pro Bowl invite for Kendricks.

It’s thin after the starting three, with Najee Goode as the next guy up after the three mentioned starters. I could see Barwin playing some outside linebacker even with Schwartz declaring him a defensive end. Barwin has some experience playing strong side linebacker during his time in Houston.

And then there is the secondary. Once again, the Eagles will need to fill a hole at the safety position.

There have been some rumors that the Eagles will look at some of the bigger free agents to fill their void at safety, but I can’t see them landing Weddle (SD) or Nelson (CINC). George Iloka, the other safety in Cincinnati is likely to get overpaid due to his size and just entering the prime of his career, but I expect him to get overpaid by another team like a Jacksonville or Oakland.

So where does that leave the Eagles? Two safeties who I really like are Tashaun Gipson (CLE) and Rashad Johnson (ARI). Gipson is young, and is coming off an injury plagued season, but the kid is extremely talented. I like him going to the New York Giants in free agency.

Johnson is the guy I would target. I really like the “strong safety” draft class, and I think the veteran leadership of Jenkins and Johnson would allow the rookie to learn under their watch while immediately contributing on special teams. Deone Bucannon was the guy I wanted in 2014; this year it’s Keanu Neal (Florida). I think Philly fans would love how Neal tackles; the guy looks for contact, and rarely misses his attended target.

I’m not sure what to make of the current cornerback situation. Can the Eagles get away with starting Rowe and Maxwell? Is JaCorey Shepherd the answer at the slot? Can former 2014 4th rounder Jaylen Watkins contribute?

I want to see Rowe and Maxwell, the kid that the Eagles traded up to select in the second round and the high priced free agent. I want to see how they look with a defensive coach who knows what he is going.

It’s hard for me to make any judgment on Shepherd and the same with Watkins. The Eagles could certainly benefit from bringing in another veteran for depth. I know the Eagles have spoken to Nolan Carroll, but would he be interested in returning to the Eagles if not guaranteed a starting role?

I don’t expect the Eagles to target any names of notoriety in free agency, but I could see them adding to their cornerback depth in that round 4-6 range.

Expectations for the Eagles are certainly favored on the defensive side. There are more proven pieces in place for Schwartz to use versus the glaring holes on offense.

I’m a defensive minded guy, and I like a lot of what Schwartz has said about his plans for the Eagles

defense. It was the right move to transition back to the 4-3, and I think the sky is the limit for how well the defense can play in 2016.

In Jim Schwartz past , he likes his DE’s to be long & lean & explosive and he will not have this starting out with the Eagles
DE’s Taylor Hart & Cedric Thornton are better suited for the 5 Technique in a 3-4 and are not explosive enough as DE’s in Schwartz Scheme and will be gone
Curry, Graham & Barwin & MS2 will all be used as Pass-Rushing DE’s but again, lack the length, wingspan that Schawrtz likes to have
I can easily see the Eagles talking to DE Mario Williams and or Drafting a true 4-3 Pass Rushing DE early in the Draft (Dodd from Clemson, Ogbah from Oklahoma St)

In Terms LB, I believe most need to be careful in anointing Jordan Hicks as the next All-Pro… Yes he played fantastic in his 5-6 Games last year but do note that ILB is one of those instinctful positions where you read and react and with Billy Davis vanilla basic Schemes, Hicks thrived as he relied on his athleticism and high Footbal instincts to make a lot of Plays and hopefully he will continue to get better in Year 2 but we’ve seen past Eagle ILB’s step in and look great for a small sample and then get exposed the more they play..Will Witherspoon, Joe Mays and Jamal Cheney all come to mind who played great their first few games out and then fizzled as Teams got more Tape on them..

Michael Kendricks has been very disappointing to me over the last couple of Seasons.. He now will be on the outside as some of us have wanted him to be since he was Drafted… He needs to improve his pass-coverage skills, it’s that simple… He’s very good when attacking, very bad when dropping back and I’d M Kendricks wants to be a 3 Down LB and worth his nice Contract, then he needs to improve in his play…

Kiko Alonso should be traded in my opinion, he had 1 year left on his Cheap Rookie Deal and his Value will likely never be higher…
I would call the 49ers who have a real need at LB and see if I can get a 4th Rounder for him, do note that the 49ers have 12 Draft Picks..
I would see if they want Taylor Hart in a trade also..

I expect the Eagles to talk to DE Mario Williams, DE Wallace Gilberry (Bengals) DE Jason Jones (Lions) along with LB’s Tahir Whitehead (Lions) & Nigel Bradham(Bills)

There are lots of Veteran CB’s out there in Free-Agency
Leodis McKelvin was just cut by the Bills who played for Schwartz
and can also return Punts/Kicks
Brandon Carr was cut by Cowboys, Morris Claiborne, Patrick Robinson, Cortland Finnegan, Jaraud Powers can all be signed on short-term Cheapo deals

The Eagles currently have too many Defensive Players under long term deals
Graham, Curry, Kendricks, Barwin, Maxwell, Jenkins , soon to be Cox & Logan..
Heck this is 8 Players, you would think the Eagles had a Top 5 Defense with this amount of Players making good $$$ and having long term deals…
I believe they need to get younger, longer and more explosive at the DE & OLB Positions and add another DT and this Draft has a lot of quality Players at these Positions..

I believe that Kiko Alonso & Brandon Graham & will be shopped around for Mid-Round Draft Picks

He says this about a 5th round pick who started one game.

After his rookie season where he didn’t produce.

Yet slathers all over the knob of a 6 year failed veteran who hasn’t produced since he entered the league.

LOL.

Taylor Hart is a 5th round draft choice backup to their best DL Fletcher Cox. Taylor Hart is fine, the birds get 2 more years of backup league minimum pay out of him. . If Taylor Hart is replaced it will come from a 6th round rookie draft pick or later. Howie will not spend to upgrade Fletcher Cox’s backup. The Eagles are not signing a FA DT or drafting one in the first 5 rounds. The last time the Eagles played the wide nine under Washburn these were their 5 DT ( Fletcher Cox, Cullen Jenkins, Antonio Dixon, Derek Landry, Cedric Thornton) the 3 backups were making the league minimum. Eagles will pay Cox, then Logen and have 3 minimum wage backups.( Beau Allen, Taylor Hart and another not on team yet to rush passer on 3rd down emergency plan)

Bull……expect him to be cut.

He was only drafted because he was a Chip Kelly guy, as was Josh Huff – not because his skill set – he has none, and can easily be upgraded.

and just for the record Vinny Curry was Fletcher Cox backup, and to your dismay, and disapproval – but who cares – the new starter in the 4-3 – not Hart – because it is obvious to those with knowledge, and eyes that Vinny Curry is vastly more talented than Taylor Hart could ever think he is….

Chip may still be the coach if he had opened his eyes as well.

Taylor Hart can easily be replaced, Cliff is right, if not for Chip Kelly, Hart would not have been drafted. Further, Hart should be cut! One of two players that can be drafted in the later rounds to play D Tackle… Chris Jones from Miss St., and Hassan Ridgeway from Texas…instant upgrade over Hart. If Chip is/was so high on hip, let’s see if Chip is willing to push or be open to a trade for him…I doubt it.

Or lets try to get our hands on Austin Johnson from Penn State who can rush the passer, and stuff the run….and is already better than Taylor Hart…

or if they can get a 2nd rounder or 2, Vernon Butler from Louisiana Tech 6-4 325 versatile, and can play DE if necessary.

There are your upgrades from Taylor Hart…..

Vinny Curry and Taylor Hart both played 26% of the snaps in their 2nd NFL season. Vinny Curry played 32% in 3rd year & 35% in 4th year. He only played obvious passing situations in the dime and nickle. He never played in obvious running situations. He is now going to have to play against the run now. You wanted it you are going to witness it. I predict his body cannot handle the work load increase of a 9 million dollar a year contract.

eagles0superbowls
eagles0superbowls

Tayor Hart played to give Fletcher Cox a rest regardless of the situation. Fletcher Cox played 80% of the snaps. That was Hart’s year 2 role, 26 % of the plays. It will be the exact same role next year. He will give Cox a rest 20% of the time and come in on 3rd and short and goal line. The Eagles will draft a situational passing down DT or sign one in FA to give the Eagles 5 DT. They won’t select 2 of them. ( Cox, Logen, Beau Allen, Hart, and another DT) and those 3 backups will make league minimum, not 2nd round money or 3rd round money but league minimum.

This DT Draft Class is Talented and Deep and a good one can be Selected in the 3rd/4th Rounds to Provide Depth behind Cox/Logan and to push Allen/Hart
Do note is Eagles Re-Sign both Cox/Logan to Extensions, then the Eagles will need to have young, DT’s onm their Rookie Deals playing behind them
Both Hart/Allen’s Contracts come up after 2016 and its time to replace at least one of them this Draft

Chris Jones – Miss State – (6-5 310lbs)
Javon Hargrove – South Carolina State – (6-1 310lbs)
Hassan Ridgeway – Texas – (6-3 303lbs)
DJ Reader – Clemson -(6-3 325lbs)
William Henry – Michigan – (6-3 305lbs)
Matt Ioannadis – Temple – (6-3 300lbs)

Eagles have 4 DE on the roster Graham, Curry, Barwin and Smith. They will need to find another. Eagles have 4 DT on the roster Cox, Logen, Allen and Hart. They will need to find another. Bird need to add 2 DL already if they release DE Smith and/or DT Hart then they have to add 3 DL or 4 DT. I just don’t see that many changes happening with Curry, Cox and Logen’s contracts hanging in the air. If the birds draft a 3rd round draft pick DT then Logen is not going to be happy and will bolt.

Eagles Still have DE’s Travis Raciti (6-3 285lbs) & Brandon Bair (6-6 290lbs)
on their Roster as well as pending Free-Agent Cedric Thornton (6-4 309lbs)

Switching to a 4-3 means that Brandon Bair, along with Taylor Hart would likely compete inside as DT as opposed to remain as DE’s as they are not explosive enough… Cedric Thornton, if re-signed, which is unlikely, would likely also move to inside as a DT

It doesn’t matter E0S, Hart was playing. not because he was better, or as good as Vinny Curry, Chip Kelly was looking for a means to justify HIS GUY – and it didn’t work – Taylor Hart sucks

I’d rather see Brandon Bair. I don’t think Taylor Hart makes this team with Chip being gone……and that would be a dose of reality for all those who think highly of Hart……

Pman has :
Cowboys – Bosa,
Giants Spence,
Redskins Kelly,
I really like Kelly that would be an excellent choice and hope it doesn’t happen in DC. Is Joey Bosa a RDE? He reminds me Bengal/ 49er Justin Smith ( get 6 sacks early as a DE then switch to DT half way through career and get 6 sacks inside) I’ve never seen Spence play, PMan do you like Spence? It will be difficult for the birds to move backwards in round one, everybody wants to move backwards, more sellers than buyers.I just don’t see any team drafting OT Spriggs over OT Decker.

paulman

March 6, 2016 11:38 am

Spence is the most explosive Pass-Rusher off the Edge in this Draft and compares with a Khalil Mack of the Raiders in Terms of getting into the backfield… Now he has some off the field baggage and maturity issues that would have to be addressed, but as a Pass-Rusher off the Edge, he’s has all the tools to be a very good one… Giants sorely need a Pass-Rushers as
They gave both Robert Ayers & JPP as Free-Agents this Year and Released DE Damontre Moore last season who never progressed much for them (kind like MS2 for the Eagles)
The Giants DL may be the weakest in the entire NFL in terms of Talent & Production… They still have Cullen Jenkins playing a lot of snaps for them..

Glad I read the article, didn’t know Schwartz said Barwin is playing DE not SAM, if that is the case the birds need a Linebacker in FA. I was going to ask Panther lover PMan if birds should go after recently cut DE Charles Johnson but if Barwin is a DE they need to find OLB. Teams are starting to use a SS as OLB now. Wonder if Eagles will under this new regime? Jeff Fisher used Mark Barron at OLB last season after OLB Alec Ogletree was injured , he is available. Might be worth a try ?

paulman
paulman
March 6, 2016 10:57 am

Charles Johnson is still a good Player but more of a Run Defender than Pass Rusher at this stage of his Career and likely just a Rotational Player and not really a good fit for Schwartz attacking wide-9 alignments which need more quickness & explosion from the DE Position
An under the radar player from Panthers is Free-Agent DE Frank Alexander who has had injuries and then a few off-the field issues.. But he’s still Young and has that length and quick step that Schwartz likes from his DE

As far as OLB – Look at Bills Nigel Bradham & Lions Tahir Whitehead as likely Players the Eagles will target in Free-Agency who both played under Schwartz

Osemele, and Allen solidify our Offensive line, and allow any other Offensive Lineman that are drafted to be gradually brought along with no pressure.

Graham is a below average player, and not a pass rusher, and I told all of you you would be disappointed that Kiko wouldn’t be to the Eagles what he was his rookie year to the Bills – He isn’t a pass rusher, a physical tackler, nor a player with any heart..

Woooooooooo. TELL ME I NAILED IT. 1 TIME!

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Dolphins are expected to acquire LB Kiko Alonso and CB Byron Maxwell from the Eagles.
Appearing on NFL Live, Schefter reported Miami would get Alonso, Maxwell, and “draft pick compensation” in exchange for “draft pick compensation” that would obviously be better for the Eagles. Schefter stated the deal is “expected to get done,” it’s just a matter of finalizing details. Alonso and Maxwell were both big-name players acquired last offseason by Chip Kelly. Both players flopped spectacularly in Philadelphia.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Ryan Mathews “is available for the right price.”
The Eagles are willing to deal both of their early-down backs, shopping DeMarco Murray and Mathews, the latter of whom was by far a superior 2015 runner to Murray. Always long on talent but short on durability, Mathews averaged over five yards per carry last year while Murray managed 3.64 YPC. Mathews missed three games, however, and has missed 13 games over the last two seasons.

Actually the chippah got one thing very, very, right 20 million dollars of right. Two things right really ,if the ole chippah is the type of guy ,who likes to watch some smokin hot california women stroll on by his oceanfront property , Well then, he is in the right locale. And as of this writing he does not yet own a beach front property , well that can be rectified as quick as some of his cuts/ trades .He truly is big balls kelly. And bought with cash on the old barrell head , Fred.

I don’t believe a minute of that, the Dolphins are pretty tight with their Cap Space and I see no way they can afford Maxwell’s Contract and still address their other areas of Need like RB, OL, WR, etc, etc… … .

There are plenty of CB’s in Free-Agency that the Dolphins can Sign
Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Sean Smith come to mind.. Why would the Dolphins want to Trade for Maxwell and take on his Contract plus give up a Draft Pick on top of that…Makes little to no sense to me….

I do expect the Eagles to call around the NFL to see if there is interest in CB B Maxwell and RB D Murray , but with the size of both of their Contracts, I don’t think there is genuine interest let alone Teams giving up Draft Picks on top of taking on their ridiculous Contracts….

I am glad to hear about the Deal … Great Job Howie Roseman … The Key looks like the Dolphins getting Starting LB Kiko Alonso, who has 1 Year Left on his Rookie Deal for $990K, which is chump change for a NFL Starter, so in essence, the Dolphins get 2 NFL Starters for about $12 Million for the 2016 Season which is the only way this makes any sense to me, but who cares at this point.. The Dolphins can walk away from both Players after 2016 without any real significant Financial Obligation to either of them if things don’t work out for them…

This definitely clears the way for the Eagles adding a LB and CB to their Roster … They probably end up Re-Signing Nolan Carroll and another Veteran (Leodis McKelvin of the Bills, or take a shot with Casey Heyward, Jaraud Power, Sean Smith or who knows)

I can see a real push for Chiefs Free-Agent CB Sean Smith

I am being tepid when it comes to the rumored reports of what the Eagles are getting in return for trading these stiffs. Last year I believed the initial reports about the Eagles getting the Rams 2nd round pick for Bradford. I was ticked when we found out that the Eagles gave the Rams the pick.
I will wait until the trade has been consummated and we learn what the actual details of the trades are. I will say this, Howie will not be a fool ass bumbling oaf ala Chip when it comes to trade value and just throwing pieces together based on talent familiarity.
If Howie got a 2nd, 4th, and a swap of 1st round picks, the Dolphins GM who did that should be fired…that trade is to good to be true..call me skeptical! hope I am wrong though…

I’m hearing a 3rd Round & a 6th Rounder from the Dolphins for Maxwell/Alonso
And a 3rd or 4th Rounder for RB Murray from the Titans which sounds more realistic and Market value for these Deals
Where people are talking about swapping 1st Round Picks with 4 Picks Total with the Dolphins is ridiculous and Cliffs Pie in the Sky of receiving 3 Picks for a
RB is more “Fantasy Island” from him… “Da Plane, Da Plane Boss” is what I think when Cliff says a #3, #5 & and a 2017 2nd Rounder for Murray…

Stop with them in hearing. That’s being kept under a lid just like Bradford details last year..

If anyone were hearing it would be schefter or rappaport. Hopefully it gets reported today

Honestly I can’t see any 1st round pick swaps because let’s be honest nobody was overpaying for Maxwell and Kiko. I could see one of our 3rds and the players for their 2nd. But I think that may be optimistic too. And I’d be shocked if we got anything higher than a 4th rounder for Murray. Either way I’m good if we got a bag of wooden nickels for them

Not for his Original Contract he wasn’t Cliff.. The Eagles had to eat some $$$ and then Murray and his Agent had to rework his Deal and take less $$$ from the Titans to make it work…

Any Player can be traded when all sides give in, which is what happened here ….

But no Team was taking on Murray’s Original Contract, that is obvious

This opens the opportunity for them to draft Ronnie Stanley, or move down for even more picks.

We need a much better Pass Rush. I like the idea of Noah Spence, and Vinny Curry off the edge. Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks, and Myckal Kendricks manning the LB Core, with Tahir Whitehead, and a healthy Jaylon Smith in 2017 reinforcing the depth.

As far as compensation for Murray is concerned, who knows what is accurate, or not. I’m thinking they get at least a 3rd, because the Eagles still took a pretty good hit to their salary cap, even though Murray reworked his contract, so I’m sure Howie wanted something of value in return.

I do feel they received at least a 3 however.

Kool, all GM’s have some bad draft choices. I am not ready to write MSII off yet as he has not had a chance to play or develop because Chip did not want him on the field. We will see what happens with Smith playing the role as a DE pursuing the QB..which is what he was successful doing at Louisville. If you want to give credit to Bradford for playing well in the last game of the season against the Giants, then you have to give credit to Smith II too because he had a good game. Credit has to be given to Howie to do what he is doing as far as making the trades. Chip made bad move after bad move, showing that he had no idea as to how to construct a team. Chip was a bumbling oaf, I know you backed his moves so it behooves you to defend him. Chip got rid of good talent DJax, Shady..to bring in average players…Murray, Alonso, Mathews. Pays Murray big money and lets Maclin walk. Let’s face it Chip was a dope just like these shills that are taking on Murray and Maxwell. Chip gets credit for dismantling the talent for culture….but Chip was the biggest problem with the culture.
