The Philadelphia Phillies won their second straight game on Friday night, taking down the Brewers 5-2. Their record improves to 8-9.

On The Mound

  • Aaron Nola bounced back from a bad start with a solid outing, anchoring the Phillies with seven solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
  • Nola allowed a run in the first inning, but settled into a good groove after that.
  • Hector Neris pitched a scoreless eighth, striking out two. He has still yet to allow a run this year.
  • Jeanmar Gomez allowed a run to score in the ninth.

At The Plate

  • The offense put up five runs on 10 hits.
  • Maikel Franco was the driving force in tonight’s win, hitting two home runs and driving in three altogether. Franco was 3-4 on the night.
  • Darin Ruf, starting in left field, singled home the team’s first run in the fourth inning.
  • Freddy Galvis went 1-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in a run.
  • Odubel Herrera went 1-5 at the top of the order. Odubel did not walk tonight, breaking a streak of seven straight games in which he has worked at least one base on balls.
  • Ryan Howard went 1-4 with a single.
  • Cameron Rupp went 1-4 with a double.
  • David Lough got another start in right, and went 1-4 with a single. Lough has hit in every game he’s appeared in.
  • Cesar Hernandez hit out of the nine-hole, going 1-4.

Final Thoughts

Maybe Pete Mackanin is on to something batting the pitcher eighth.

In the last two games his offense has gone off for five runs and 10 hits, two of their most effective showings of the season.

Great to see Maikel Franco break out of his slump with a couple of big home runs. Hopefully this is able to carry over through the next few games.
