You Must Finish Strong In The NFL

brandongrahamvscowboys1The Eagles outplayed the Cowboys for three and a half quarters, but it wasn’t enough.  You have to finish strong in the National Football League or you’re going to lose to good football teams.  When the game is on the line, somebody has to make a play.  Last night with the game on the line in the fourth quarter and overtime, they didn’t make the plays and Dallas did.   This will be a lesson for Doug Pederson and Carson Wentz.

Wentz played very well for most of the game, but he needs more help from his teammates, especially his receivers.  They’ve got to improve the wide receivers on this roster because they don’t get open often or consistently enough.

The defense did a good job for most of the game, but it wasn’t enough.  Jim Schwartz did a good job of containing Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott for the first three quarters, but they didn’t finish strong.   Schwartz had Prescott confused for much of the game. He wasn’t playing with confidence like he had for most of the season.  He looked like a rookie, but he got it together when he had to do it.

Brandon Graham continues to be the Eagles best defensive player.  He was making plays all over the field last night. Graham was pounding Ezekiel Elliott all night long.  In addition, he put pressure on Prescott and almost forced him into throwing a number of interceptions.  Graham plays with passion and intensity.

I thought head coach Doug Pederson made a mistake in not kicking the field goal in the fourth quarter at the end of the game when they decided to punt the football.  Caleb Sturgis had kicked a couple of 50 plus yard field goals at the end of the first half. Pederson will remember this one going forward.  He knows that you have to keep your foot on the gas peddle in the NFL.

I thought Peterson also made a mistake by not using his timeouts at the end of the game to try to get the ball back to try and win the game before the clock ran out.  If he used his timeouts, it would have forced the Cowboys into punting to the Eagles Darren Sproles.  I like our chances with the Cowboys punting the ball to Sproles.

I don’t agree with criticism of Eagles head coach about Pederson putting rookie running back Wendell Smallwood in the game in the fourth quarter.  It was first and ten, the Birds had a 10-point lead with 13 minutes to go in the game.  Smallwood fumbled because Big V. got pushed back into him a split second after he took the handoff.

Yes, Smallwood fumbled because Big V was getting his butt kicked on that play.  You can’t expect a veteran running back like Darren Sproles to play every snap of the game.  You have to get him a break.

I don’t have confidence in the Eagles cornerbacks because they don’t have elite speed.  If the Eagles defensive line isn’t getting to the quarterback, the Birds cornerbacks will be getting beat.  I like the competitive fire they play with, but I don’t see the speed.  I’m talking about Leodis Mckelvin, Nolan Carroll and Jalen Mills. I think Carroll is the fastest of the group, but he doesn’t play the ball well, when it’s in the air.

I don’t think Wentz did a good job at the end of the game when he chose to throw the ball to Trey Burton in a match up with  It wasn’t a good matchup to go after.  The Cowboys defensive back was climbing all over Burton.  He wasn’t open.  Wentz should have gone somewhere else with the football.

The A.R.ghosts and goblins ,have impacted the road wars,dallas..a winnable division game the fourth qtr.was littered with some injurious decision making..13 minutes mark wendell smallwood put the first touch of the game on the ground..judgement of who to trust in game closing drives falls squarely on the coach..with the birds leading 23-16. 7:16 to go,and the ball on cowboys 32 2nd and 10 he dialed up two lateral plays, and elected to punt,vs a great opportunity to kick a 53 yarder..with the fourth qtr.expiring pederson kept a time out in hiis pocket and didnt opt gor dallas to punt ,to sproles with dallas watching double 00 at their 15 yard line. It’s incompetent,to add in the most obvious gaffee throwing a backwards toss when again not understanding down and distance to run vertically and put the game into two scores..territory…agholor in post game interviews snaps..hes soft and has chips fingerprints allover him..hes done here

This loss is on doug Pedersen
1. The first series of the game after you make Dallas go 3 and out you come out and the run the ball with sproles 3 straight plays to go 3 and out..

2. Putting Jalen mills on Beasley when he can’t cover small shifty wrs with speed he’s a better match up with big wrs

3. Why do you play agholor in the red zone he has to many mental errors drops wrong routes ect..

4. Why do you run Smallwood late in the game when you haven’t run him all game and you get a fumble

5. On a 3rd and 4 play after a Dallas timeout why do you call a play for trey burton

6. On 3rd and 7 why do you call a swing pass to sproles when you could’ve ran the ball got 3yds and kick the fg go up 10pts

7. At the end of the 4th qt after a Barwin sack why wouldn’t you call a timeout to try and get the ball back

This loss is,all on coaching doug Pedersen with your 3 wr routes that you run wr screen, swing pass and slants if I know what’s coming in sure defense does also and why wasn’t Kendricks the spy on Dak and why was mills who is better suited for the cover 2 why was he man to man with Beasley piss poor coaching

Agree DE, I truly hate the cowboys from the owner to water boy. And this wasn’t an if we did this, or if that hadn’t happened type of loss, where we hope, wish and dream the birds are better than they are. By the end of the 3rd quarter Dallas was cooked. Prescott was confused and Elliott was getting stuffed (not even doing the stupid “feed me”) antic. The stadium was silent. Even with the Smallwood fumble, the D stiffened and held them to 3. The game came down to the lateral pass to sproles on the Dallas 32 that lost yards and subsequent stupid decision to punt, where your kicker had already made a longer kick, 2x (ice TO) in essentially a dome. You maintain that 2 score lead with 6 minutes left, its ballgame. By giving them the ball back, now down only 1 score, let them believe. Despite the horrible skill players we have, and they are brutal, this loss is on the coach.

Defensively, Where was Fletcher Cox (whose play has been Average this Season after Benny Logan’s Injury) Vinny Curry and Michael Kendricks..
These are 3 Veterans who should be making larger contributions to the Team than they are providing …
I would love to see the Eagles Trade Ryan Matthews, Nelson Agholor & Michael Kendricks

Wonder how much Benny Logan’s Stock and $$$ Value has gone up, even though he’s been injured.. Will the Eagles Resign him this Off-Season or extend him during the Season ? I would think when Healthy, he will draw a lot of interest around the NFL with Teams that Run a Base 4-3..

Howie Roseman will lock up Logan just as they did Cox the FO is hell bent on showing players that you will not get shown the door if you play well here in Philly. As opposed to what Chip Kelly did the last 3 season’s. It would be interesting to see what he would get on the open market.

I believe Benny Logan is the most underrated Player on the Eagles Team
and really is the glue that holds the interior of the Defense together…I like Hicks but he’s a little on the small side and struggles shedding blockers once they engage him and he needs a stud like Logan to take on those moving Guards or at least slow them up so Hicks can hit the Hole and make Plays on the Ball Carrier.. Logan also takes pressure off of Cox.. They Need to Extend him and I hope it happens soon and not wait until after the Season for too much can happen between Agents, Teams, Potential New Pursuer’s ..

This loss took a lot out pf me too. I did not even want to listen to sports radio or sports shows today.
I’m moving on..looking towards the Giants game..and it is a giant game..the Eagles must win a division game and it starts this week.
I want to see if nelson Agholor will have the same anger in him on the field Sunday as he did in the locker room last night when asked about the drops. This Giants game will be the game that will defing Agholors career with the Eagles. If he comes out without aggression and fight, he will just be another soft PAC 12 player on the NFL level. Put up or shut up time for Agholor. I’m sure ODB will put on a show…can Agholor manage to give us a preview?

Whats so frustrating to see,is that with better strategically coached football we very well may have been able to knock Dalllas off there b.s.mantel..im seeing a team that stood toe to toe and didn’t at all seemed like the hostile environment ,overwhelmed them..We all have a want it now mentality, myself included, however we understand without a doubt we have a guy in wentz that has proven that hes the real deal..had he been fortunate to have won the o.t.coin flip, who doubts he wouldn’t have put us on his back..we need look back and understand the coach hasnt coached even half a season and he will grow .setbacks learned will only be benefiting ,lets get this awful taste rinsed ,and get after sheli..

Well, at least watching Bradford slouch his way through another big game on the road provides some relief…..knowing the birds made the right call there.

Couple of online picks early, maybe a new TE and wr in rounds 3 and 4…..more depth after that and we’re in for a good run from 2018-2024.

The blue print for beating the Vikings was laid by the Eagles. Pressure Bradford and take him out of the game (figuratively). The Vikings defense did not look as stout last night, perhaps because they were on the field a lot.
The more the Vikes lose, the more the Eagles win.
Sleeves took another beating last night. By the 3rd quarter he was rattled and seeing ghost. If that line continues to play the way they have been sleeves will miss some games due to injury.

No Surprise… Vikings have Back-Up OT’s on both side of their OL
They have Back-up Quality RB’s and a Immobile QB…
If they can’t get a semblance of a Running Game, they will struggle to Score
17 Points a Game which doesn’t Win too many Games in the NFL

They will end up with 9-10 Wins or so in a pretty Week NFC North which may be good enough to Win the Division meaning the Eagles will get the 20th to 32nd Pick based on how Deep into the Playoffs they Go

The Bottom Line is the NFC is Wide Open with Seattle, Vikings, Cardinals & Packers all Struggling and having Issues with their Offensive Lines and Protecting their QB’s …

oops here they are:
1. Every game comes down to a coaches decision that either works or doesn’t work. In this case ours didn’t, the fake punt for them did.
2. Most importantly it looks like we have 3 contributing players (minimum) from the 16 draft– Big V’s name wasn’t called much, if any– a great sign for an OL, Mills is going to be in the secondary for some time and of course Wentz is the future-so with the ‘mortgaging’ the future it looks like we still got 3 (at least) players out of this draft
3. It is time for Minny to take a real slide, lets get that pick up into the top half of the first round.

I think Minnesota loses this week to the Lions. Ziggy Ansah is back and he will be going up against the tackles I saw last night, he should feast on them. Sammy will be pressured, hurried, sacked and hit plenty again this upcoming week.
The eagles first round pick will be in the twenties. If the Vikes make it to the play offs they will not win their first game. Looking at what is happening to them now and their schedule, I’m not sure they get to the play offs though. I foresee a collapse.

With the cards panthers seahawks pack all stumbling this trade deadline is intriguing..do the birds or dont they make, what is often a difficult move? Atlanta and dallas seem like the head of the division at this juncture.peeking ahead Atlanta plays tampa on a short week thurs.at eagles ,cards.chiefs at rams 49ers at panthers and saints..dallas at browns at steelers (bens practicing) ,ravens..redskins at miny,at gints, bucs ,lions at eagles..new yrs day

When looking around teh NFC,
What Team is Winning more than 10 Games ?
Maybe the Cowboys since they are 6-1 already ..

The Packers & Seahawks are a bit off and just not quite the same Teams and have OL Problems, not much of a Running Game and Injuries on Defense
The Falcons have struggles closing games out and have played poorly late in the Season the last couple of Years but their Win last Week versus the Packers was huge…(they could very easily be 6-2 or 7-1) The Cardinals/Panthers are struggling, though I wouldn’t count either one out just yet and then the Rest are all up and down (Lions,Saints,Giants,Eagles,Redskins, Rams, TB Bucs are all still very inconsistent)

I see lot of Teams in that 7-8-9 Win Bunch but not many with 11-12-13 Wins
These Division Games are crucial for a Team to make the Postseason
Going less than 4-2 within in your Own 6 Divisional Games will make it very difficult to get into the Post-Season

The game is hard to watch again knowing how everything unfolded in the last 8 minutes. I too am encouraged by how Big V played. That gives me hope that the Eagles will not have to draft two OT’s. Smallwood can still be a good player, he just has to hold onto the ball, however, I don’t think he’s an every down feature back.
I believe Isaac Seumalo will be Jason Kelce’s replacement at Center so the 16 draft may prove to be very good…at the end of the day it all depends on Wentz’s continuous development and play.

Some Guards that the Eagles can Check out

Dorian Johnson from Pitt (6-5 305lbs) – 2nd/3rd Round Prospect
Braden Smith from Auburn (6-5 300lbs- 4th Round Prospect)
Sean Harlow from Oregon St (6-4 310lbs – 5th Round Prospect)
Danny Isidora from Miami (6-4 310lbs – 6th/7th Round Prospect)

I’ll pass on Dorian Johnson, he’s not physically aggressive or nasty enough for me, further, I’m not impressed with his athleticism in the pass game.
I’m not familiar enough with the other Guards you’ve listed to comment.

I like Notre Dame Guard Quenton Nelson 6’5″ 325,
LSU C/G Ethan Pocic 6’6″ 310
Indiana Guard Dan Feeney 6’4″ 315

A Tackle I’d like the Eagles to draft who could start off at Guard and step in in a pinch at LT is Wisconsin OT Ryan Ramyczek 6’5″ 325.

Eagles offense ranked 29th, passing offense ranked 30th the Eagles are only averaging 208 yards a game passing. There damn near at the bottom of every offensive stat accept for rushing and that doesn’t look all that great either. I suspect that Pederson is going to mold Carson Wentz into another Alex Smith and handcuff him with that miserable pile of shit parked car offense that him and the walrus ran in Kansas City.

Josh Huff arrested. Good. That solves that problem.

Eagles have a must win this weekend. That will get them to 2-2 over the stretch of 4 difficult games (@wsh, Minny, @dall, @NYG). I predicted 2-2 there and Eagles MUST make that number.

Then they have to go 2-2 over the next 4 extremely difficult gauntlet (Atl, @sea, GB, @Cinci)

That could see them at 7-5 heading into the last quarter.

That quarter is manageable and I think (if the Birds win this week at NY and then split the next 4) they could control their own destiny for the playoffs.

Going 3-1 over that stretch (Wsh, @Balt, NYG, Dall) should get the Eagles to the playoffs.

However, if they lose this weekend, the road becomes, IMO, too difficult.

That’s not the way it works.

Alex Smith throws short because he is Alex Smith, not because of Andy Reid.

Alex Smith threw short in SF and he throws short in KC. In fact, his y/a has actually increased under Reid over his ddays in SF.

More evidence that it isn’t Reid who “molds” his QB is to look at what happens(ed) when Smith leaves the game. This past Sunday, when Smith left Foles came in and his y/a was 3 yrds higher than Smith’s was, and his ay/a was 4 higher. Andy Reid was coaching and calling plays for both of them.

Doug Pederson is not going to “mold” Wentz into Alex Smith.

Ok just re watched with a critical eye. Actual it’s not too critical. I focused on three areas; OL particularly Big V, defensive line, secondary.
Big V was earning a solid B up until the end where he got put on skates twice, most importantly in small woods fumble. The fumble wasn’t small woods fault btw. DL, graham is a good player , all over the field, pressure on a mobile QB. Logan is really missed. MS2 act sully contributed. Secondary outstanding. Gave up a play or two but really happy with the D.
DGB 3 huge drops.

I thought Center Kelce was average at best, he’s getting beat off the snap too often and the Cowboy DT’s rely more on quickness than size and strength which is supposed to be Kelces strength but he got beat to the spot or hole quite a few times from what I recall..
I also sense TE Ertz is not showing a sense of urgency and passion out there.. he seems to be playing at 85% speed.. maybe he’s hurt or favoring something but he hadn’t looked right in this Offense in the 3 Games I’ve seen..

Anyway, I hope Treggs can make a play or two to open up the offense.
