Notes From The Phillies’ 5-1 Win Over St. Louis

The Philadelphia Phillies snapped their five-game losing streak on Thursday afternoon, taking down the Cardinals 5-1. Their record improves to 23-48.

On The Mound

  • Aaron Nola anchored the victory, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing just one run on four hits.
  • Nola struck out eight, and gave up his only run on a solo homer in the eighth inning.
  • Pat Neshek came on and got the final two outs of the eighth.
  • Luis Garcia mopped up with a scoreless ninth.

At The Plate

  • The offense put up five runs on seven hits.
  • Tommy Joseph supplied three of the team’s runs, going 2-4 with a solo homer.
  • Freddy Galvis hit second and went 2-4 with a solo homer in the first inning.
  • Cameron Perkins hit in the leadoff spot again, and went 0-4.
  • Odubel Herrera hit third, and went 1-3 with a double.
  • Maikel Franco returned to cleanup spot after spending most of the month hitting towards the bottom of the order, and responded with an 0-3 effort.
  • Daniel Nava played left, and went 1-3 with a single.
  • Andres Blanco got a start at second, going 1-3 with a single.
  • Cameron Rupp caught the game, and went 0-3.

Final Thoughts

Another losing streak is mercifully at an end.

Expect a new one to start over the weekend.

Aaron Nola has quietly put together a pretty solid month of June. Nola has an ERA of 3.42 for the month, and has only had one bad start where he’s given up more than three runs. He had an eight-inning effort at the start of the month, and turned in a strong showing today.

In what’s been a lost season for the team, a real victory for the future would be if Nola establishes some consistency to give the team confidence in him at the top of the rotation for next year.
