Notes From The Phillies’ 3-1 Win Over Miami

The Philadelphia Phillies won the finale of their series with the Marlins on Sunday afternoon 3-1. Their record improves to 52-84.

On The Mound

  • Jake Thompson got called up for a start, and responded with six solid innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven.
  • Thompson’s only run was scored on a wild pitch.
  • Juan Nicasio pitched a scoreless seventh.
  • Luis Garcia got the team through the eighth with the game tied.
  • Adam Morgan threw three scoreless, hitless innings out of the bullpen to get the win.
  • Hector Neris recorded the save in the ninth.

At The Plate

  • The offense put up three runs on 11 hits.
  • Cesar Hernandez drove in the team’s only run in regulation, going 2-5 with a couple of singles and a walk.
  • Nick Williams struggled going 0-4 and leaving five on base in his first few at-bats, but delivered a two-run single in the 12th inning.
  • Freddy Galvis went 2-6 with a couple singles.
  • Tommy Joseph turned in an 0-5, leaving six on base.
  • Maikel Franco went 1-5 with a double.
  • Hyunn Soo Kim went 1-5 with a single.
  • Jorge Alfaro went 1-4 with a single.
  • Cameron Perkins went 0-4.
  • Daniel Nava had a pinch-hit single.
  • Rhys Hoskins sat after being hit with a pitch in yesterday’s game.

Final Thoughts

Jake Thompson has had a rough year in both the minors and majors, but today’s start was a pretty strong one.

One of the centerpieces of the Cole Hamels’ trade, Thompson’s struggles have been concerning so far, so its good to see him finally have a little success in the big leagues.

With Jerad Eickhoff shut down for the season, Thompson will probably get another start, and likely the rest of the season to put himself in the conversation to join the rotation next year.

As torturous as the season has been they are starting to figure out some pieces. They have 3 hitters that if they had enough at bats could be in ROY discussions. Nola is a solid piece, the other young pitchers are starting to figure things out. Morgan has been very good lately.
Come on paulman come back to us, spew some dumb shit against the wall! Make some profound statement about players you’ve never seen! We miss it!
