GARRY “G” COBB
Garry “G” Cobb is a classic case of a former NFL star who transitioned successfully to a radio and television career. Garry played linebacker in the National Football League for 11 years. He spent 6 seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he was a team captain for three years and led them to the playoffs in two of those years. Garry then played three years along side Hall-Of-Famer Reggie White as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished his career with two years in Dallas playing for head coaches Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson. Some of Garry’s teammates in Dallas were Hall-Of-Famers Troy Aikman, and Michael Irvin.
As an outside linebacker in Buddy Ryan’s vaunted “46” Defense, Garry had his best day as a pro when he registered 4 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in a single game against the Atlanta Falcons and was named the Sports Illustrated NFL Defensive Player Of The Week. He held the Eagles single game sack until Clyde Simmons surpassed him with a 4 ½ sack game. Garry was traded by the Lions to the Eagles in 1985 for one of the Birds All-Time greats Wilbert Montgomery.
Cobb played on some outstanding defenses while playing for the Lions. He led NFL linebackers in interceptions with five during one of his years in Detroit.
Garry also led the Cowboys with 7 1/2 sacks during one of his two seasons in Dallas.
After his football career, Garry became a popular sports radio talk show host on Sportsradio 610-WIP in 1991. He became known as G. Cobb and has developed quite a following among sports fans and especially Eagles fans in the area. In addition, Garry was a sports anchor and reporter on CBS-3 television in Philadelphia for eight years.
G. Cobb is currently a football analyst for Comcast's CN8 television network in additon to being a columnist for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin newspaper. A couple of years ago he created GCobb.com, which is a website that covers the Philadelphia Eagles. The site has quickly become one of the more popular local websites.
Prior to playing in the NFL, Garry was an All-American football, basketball and baseball player in Stamford, Connecticut. He received numerous offers from universities throughout the country before deciding to the go to the University Of Southern California. While there, Garry was an All-Pac 10 linebacker and played on two Rose Bowl Championship teams and one National Championship squad.
Garry recently wrote his first book titled, “Don’t Be Clueless” which is an inspiring book for teenagers and adults, who are trying to find meaning in life and attempting to put together a game plan for their careers. The book speaks about goal setting, chasing your dreams, taking personal responsibility and living a balanced life.
Garry was honored in 2002, by President Bush for his work as a mentor to troubled youngsters. He’s currently on the Board of the Caring People Alliance of Philadelphia, which oversees a number of city community centers, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Philadelphia. He’s been a volunteer counselor at the Youth Study Center in Philadelphia, which houses youngsters who have been arrested and are awaiting court dates. Garry is a highly sought after speaker, who has shown the ability to both entertain and motivate audiences nationwide.
