Tight Ends Impressive In Indy Workout

The tight ends got their workout in Indianapolis today and some of them helped themselves while others hurt their chances of going early.  The top rated tight end USC's Fred Davis didn't run the 40 yard dash but did participate in pass catching drills and was impressive.

Davis will run his forty, long jump and other drills at USC in March at the school's Pro Day.

The guy who hurt himself was Notre Dame tight end John Carlson .  Carlson who is probably the best blocker of the group, lumbered to a 4.9 forty-yard dash.   This is very slow for a marque tight end and will likely drop him a couple of rounds to either the 3rd or 4th round.  He could fit in well with a team which already has a good pass receiving tight end who can get downfield.  Carlson would serve as a good blocker and short pass catcher.

Purdue's Dustin Keller turned some heads when he ran a 4.53 time in the forty..  Keller was very impressive getting downfield during the catching drills and he also caught the ball well. His 38 inch vertical jump was the best amongst the tight ends.  This kid needs to improve his blocking but is already good enough to be a quality pass-catching tight end in the NFL.

Kellen Davis of Michigan State was very impressive in the 40 yard dash as he ran a 4.6.  He's had some problems off the field during his time at Michigan State.
