Multiple Teams Have Contacted Eagles About QB's

Here's what he tweeted:

Multiple teams have called Eagles to inquire about their three QBs. The conversation, and speculation, will heat up in early March.

This is great news for the Eagles and their fans which means they will be in a strong bargaining position as we go through the period before the draft.

They may find themselves in a position where they can keep whichever quarterback or quarterbacks they want to and get valuable draft picks for the one or two which they want to trade.

McNabb says that head coach Andy Reid told him he would return for the 2010 season.  His contract runs out at the end of the season.

Kolb and McNabb McNabb gets a $6 million dollar bonus in May, right after the draft.

Kolb is coming to the end of a four year deal and would become a free agent at the end of the season depending on what happens with the collective bargaining agreement.

Vick will make about $5 million dollars this year if he's with the team.

Trade McNabb to the rams ,because they are not going anywhere anyway , that way it won't come back to haunt us !
  • Serpent10S  - This is exactly why it is time for Kolb
    Move McNabb and Vick
Bring in a Veteran back up and draft a project QB.

If we are all realistic this is the only outcome that makes any sense. This team is at least a year or two away from competing for a Superbowl unless they somehow find a magic defense.

McNabb should go to either AZ or the Vikings and chase a title (I don't think he wins one though).

Vick helps a bad team compete and sell tickets.

Kolb shows us if he is the real deal or not.

Barring a Lockout the next season we are in a position to have an experienced young QB or we will draft his replacement hopefully with a rookie pay scale in place to minimize the risk.

Hanging on to McNabb will just hold this team back in the next 5 years. are 5 years worth 1 more shot?

Great points Serpent and I agree with you 100%
They are not going to win a Super Bowl with either McNabb as a QB or with this current Defense right now or anytime soon.
    Trade McNabb for a 2nd and a 4th Rd pick and a conditional 3rd Rounder in 2011.
Trade Vick for hopefully a 3rd Rd
Sign a veteran QB to be back-up for Kolb
(Garcia,AJ Feely,Penningto n) and draft one in the mid-late rounds to develop for the futures
Use Free-Agency to updgrade the DE/S position
and then use the 8-9 draft picks, after these moves, that they would have within the top 140 players or so (top 4 Rounds) and concentrate on getting depth along Off/Def Lines,LB and the Def Secondary, also Draft a QB and
another WR who can double as a return man in the kicking game

"they are not going to win a SB with McNabb as a QB with this current D right now or anytime soon". This doesnt even make any sence. Would they win with Kolb as a qb with this d? Or vick with this d? no. what you are trying to say is that this d is not good enough to win, and it has nothing to do with 5.
  • htkrocks  - It makes every bit of sense.....
The Eagles currently have a blitzing, 'bend but don't break' defense that focuses more on forcing turnovers rather than 3 and outs. Those type of defenses have a tendency to wear down the course of a game and a season.

The only way to keep a D like that as fresh and healthy as possible is to have an offense that sustains drives.

One key to having an offense that sustains drives is an accurate QB who can consistently move the chains and not mainly rely on 50 yd+ bombs....That QB isn't #5.
  • Stevo
the way to keep a drive going is to get the run game going. Yes Mcnabb throws a hard short ball but his passes of 10 yards are fine. Also.... the "bend but not break" D was not something they designed. Its something that happens when your Lb's just are not good enough. Go back and look at the things dawk used to say about bend but dont break D. It drove him NUTZZZZ. You make it sound like its a good thing. It means you cant get off the field. BTW.... what makes you think Kolb is more accurate? He is always off in camp and preseason.
  • Stevo
BTW.... Dmac is not calling the plays. The Bombs are called by the HC. only 2 years ago you guys were saying that McNabb cant hit the WR's deep and he checks down to much. Now.... you guys are trying to say he throws 50 yarders because he cant hit the short ones. Make up your minds already. Bottom line.... we are still talking about 5 when its the BEND and BREAK D that is the prob. PLAY AT THE LINE ASAM!!!!!
  • Paulman
It has a lot to do with #5
In years past when their Defense was much better, they still ended up with the same result whjich is underperforming come playoff time and not winning a Championship..
I mean he's only had his chances now for what 10-11 years to Win, He has had his opportunites and now it's time to move on and move forward, which they will not fully be able to do as a Franchise until McNabb is gone
    It's very simple Steve...
  • richcow  - Trade value
I think it is pretty certain that Vick gets traded somewhere. As for the McNabb/Kolb thing, I think the key is what do we get in return? If we can fill two defensive holes (say LB and DE) with trading McNabb for a pick and a proven player, that would be reason to trade him. In my humble opinion, if Kolb starts next year, we will see a slight dropoff in QB play, that would cost us maybe 1 win. That could be made up with significant upgrades to the defense. We need 3 or 4 upgrades there so trading McNabb to fill 2 of those would be a smart move. Trading McNabb for a single choice (probably rd 2) is not enough.
  • Stevo
ok.... so let me make this clear again. The rams will not get mcNabb because he would never take a trade to a team that has no chance of winning. He will not do a new deal with them. No team will trade away a first rounder (or more) for a player who would only play 1 year. Furthermore.... the eagles are not going to trade away Mcnabb for anything else. PLUS.... they arent going to trade him to anyone that will contend in the NFC. PLUS.... Reid said he is staying. Its not going to happen guys!!!!
  • pcotten
Only 1 year? Did the NFL do away with franchise and transition tags? Or did the NFL pass a rule that a team aquiring McNabb isn't allowed to tag him?
  • Stevo
great point.. but bottom line is teams will not do it unless they have a happy camper. Holding qb's ransom does not work.... see Tampa bay as proof.
  • Stevo
Why dont you people get it??? Mcnabb is not the prob. They need help on d. Thats the prob. they need at least 1 lb, fs, LDE,and in my opininon..... they need a New D cord and an O cord who wants to try and run. You can blame 5 all you want but he's not leaving. Trade Vick for nothing less then a 3rd rounder. Trade kolb for a number 2 (we can pick up AJ Feeley part 2 when that team lets kolb go in 2 years. Let it go and lets talk about football.
  • Serpent10S  - I am not saying McNabb is the problem
I am saying he is an aging commodity that has NO value next year (To the eagles).

Kolb is a young prospect and seems ready to go. We have a young team that can grow together over the next few seasons. Kolb makes more sense period.
  • Stevo
:x he will play football for at least 3 or 4 more years. "aging" ?? he's a qb not a rb.

NO value? He's a pro bowl qb on a team that scores alot of points. Enough with this rebuilding crap. We've been hearing about the "window is closing" from the 610wip boys for years. Dont buy into it. We are in the playoffs every year. If they make 3 big moves we are back in the bowl.

To the guy who said we would only lose 1 more game buy switching to Kolb... YOU ARE CRAZY!!!! We have no idea. If it wernt for the O side of the ball this year we would have been at the bottom of the east.
  • Serpent10S  - No Value to the eagles
I feel you missed my point. Unless they extend McNabb he will be leaving in Free Agency or they will have to Tag him.

My question- Why tag him???? If you want him extend him period end of story.

Read what did not happen. The team did not extend him this year meaning they ARE likely moving 5.

By not extending him they left the door open for his exit. Is it possible he stays and they Tag him and Trade him- I gues but that would decrease his value as he is getting older and is not a PURE pocket passer.
  • Serpent10S  - Continued
This does not mean McNabb (the person/player) is the issue. The issue is McNabb the CONTRACT and INVESTMENT.

Kolb offers 10+ years (All Prime) vs McNabb 3-5 years (more post prime than Not) and likely at a much lesser contract than McNabb $(ALL MIGHTY)$.

The Money is important as it opens up the ability to keep other players.

Also as a Fan after 11 years of the same old I am ready for a change.

I don't care if we go 0-16 next year with Kolb I want to see what happens. (Besides maybe 0-16 rids us of a coach who doesn't use all weapons (running game)or proves his system works with the right personel)

Aren't you a little curious as to what 16 games of another QB would look like- It seems they have changed out the peices everywhere else whynot under center?
  • pcotten
O cord who wants to try and run....

Nonsense. It isn't Marty who decides to pass the ball 65% of the time. That is coming from the head coach. Why put this on the coordinator? Makes no sense.
  • Stevo
I agree (first time ever with you i think :) ), what i was trying to say is get someone on staff that can get in their ear about running. Andy does hand over the calling to marty at times but they both share the same view of running.
  • EagleBeliever
I think people who want McNabb to stay are misunderstandin g the people who want to see him get traded.

Let's agree on one thing...we all know, both sides, that McNabb can play the QB position fairly well in the NFL. No debate there.

We also agree that the defense is the problem and not the offense. Therefore we should rebuild the defensive side of the ball...

The reason it makes sense to get rid of McNabb now is that this is the deepest draft for DEFENSE in the past 10 years. Wouldn't you rather trade a guy for 2 or 3 more draft picks to stack the defense? Rather than keeping him and hope to catch lightning in a bottle? We realize McNabb is not the problem. But by moving him, it will help us address the problem on the defensive side of the ball.
  • EagleBeliever
The decision becomes a lot easier when you have a guy who has been groomed for 4 years in the system.

We already have the replacement for McNabb, and he is ready to play. So instead of pumping more money into #5 and hope that we somehow make it to the superbowl, why wouldn't you stack the defense, give Kolb 1-2 years with the current starters and reevaluate the situation in 2 years? It just makes sense, and everything they have done with drafting and releasing aging players (when a replacement is ready) agrees with this.
