Jamie Moyer: At 49 years old, Moyer continues to defy all odds and has worked his way back into the game as a member of the Colorado Rockies’ rotation. He’s 2-3 with a 4.20 ERA in eight starts after being away from the game for more than a year. How can you not admire this [...]

A concern about the Phillies before the season was the amount of depth in the bullpen. The team had lost a reliable reliever in Chad Durbin. They were forced to bring a pair of unreliable pitchers (J.C. Romero, Danys Baez) back out of necessity. Jose Contreras and Brad Lidge were each another year older, and [...]

There’s nothing worse for a pitcher than being shown up by a position player on the mound. Though, the opportunity for that to happen is one-in-a-million, the situation can arise when a game gets out of hand and bullpens are dwindling down.
That situation happened last night — or shall I say early this morning — [...]

J.C. Romero’s calf injury may have been a blessing in disguise. The injury to Romero forced Phillies manager Charlie Manuel to use Antonio Bastardo as his go to left hander out of the bull pen. The injury to Romero allows Bastardo the chance to prove he can pitch well under pressure late in ball games.

Roy Halladay’s first start of the season wasn’t a bad one. He went six innings, gave up five hits, and allowed one run to score. However, Halladay’s pitch count quickly went over 100 pitches before the 6th inning was over. He made quick work of the Astros through the first three innings, but labored through [...]

There’s a new name on the Phillies radar. Relief pitcher Mike Stutes has done nothing but impress the Phillies throughout Spring Training, and is rising from being an unknown to a serious contender for a position in the Phillies bullpen.
Stutes has allowed just one run in 10 innings during Spring Training. Even more impressive, Stutes [...]

During this dull time prior to spring training, baseball analysts tend to dig deep for news stories.
Jayson Stark of ESPN recently posted a story regarding the “most creative clauses of the offseason.”
According to the story, some players received unique clauses when they signed this offseason, such as Jayson Werth’s contract, which granted him the No. [...]

The Philadelphia Phillies have secured their need for a left-handed specialist after signing J.C. Romero, who was let go earlier in the offseason after the Phillies declined a $4.5 million option, to a one-year deal.
With Romero re-joining the club and Cliff Lee on the payroll, the Phillies will now have to manage a tight pocket.
With [...]

No matter how you look at it, the Phillies rotation, on paper, is the best in the league.
On the contrast, the bullpen is a work in progress.
Unlike the starting rotation, which is filled with hall-of-fame potential between Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cliff Lee, the bullpen is filled with walk-happy hurlers.
Aside from Brad Lidge, the [...]

With J.C. Romero’s tenure in Philadelphia coming to a close, the Phillies will need to find someone to fill their vacant left-handed specialist position.
As of now, the Phillies have four relievers signed (Lidge, Madson, Baez, Contreras); only one of them, Antonio Bastardo, is lefty, and he only pitched in 18.2 innings last season.
So who will [...]
