Philadelphia Flyers v Carolina Hurricanes

NHL free agency hit the one week mark at noon this past Sunday. In that span, the Flyers signed Michael Leighton, former Flyers Ruslan Fedotenko and Danny Syvret, and newcomers Cullen Eddy and Bruno Gervais.
They also let Jaromir Jagr and Matt Carle walk.
In the short-term, the Flyers appear to still be missing a few pieces [...]

Parise, Suter and Carle Off the Boards While Flyers Tread Water

Montreal Canadiens v Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have largely stood pat since July 1, waiting for free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter to decide which lucrative contract offer would be enough to warrant their services.
The wait is over, as both free agents signed matching 13 year, $98 million contracts with the Minnesota Wild on Independence Day.
Among their other [...]

While no big names have yet to sign in Philadelphia, there continues to be a flurry of activity and rumors surrounding the team. I’ve compiled the news below for brevity.

The NHL Free Agency Period is underway.  According to capgeek.com, the Flyers have $11,381,627 in cap space.  This number will rise when, as expected, the Flyers put Chris Pronger on long-term IR to start the season.  The Pronger move would give the club an extra $4,921,429 to spend on team salaries.  Further, teams are allowed [...]

The Philadelphia Flyers need help on defense, especially with the unknown status of captain Chris Pronger.
If they want to make a big splash and get an elite defenseman, they could go out in free agency and sign Ryan Suter.  Or they could make a subtle move and resign Matt Carle while also acquiring a depth [...]

New Jersey Devils v Philadelphia Flyers - Game One

There is no player on the 2011-12 Philadelphia Flyers more polarizing than Matt Carle.
The loudest contingent of fans loathe him while many of the beat writers and bloggers that cover the team think the world of him.
Dustin Leed of The Hockey Guys has even suggested he’s about as good of a player as Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan [...]

Matt Carle, Sergei Bobrovsky

Jay Greenberg of CSNPhilly asked Philadelphia Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette on Tuesday night what he thought of Matt Carle’s game.
“I think the longest time, you used to hear that Matty was good because he played next to Chris,” said Laviolette. “That was the common theme, and yet here he is. We certainly wish we [...]

For all the talk lately about what trades the Flyers should or shouldn’t make, it’s worth crediting Paul Holmgren for bringing Wayne Simmonds to Philadelphia this offseason because he just had one heck of a game against the Nashville Predators, who fell 4-1 to the Flyers this evening.
Simmonds had his first two-goal game with the [...]
