I heard somebody joke that Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid were utilizing Don Corleone's strategy of keeping their friends close and their enemies closer, when they visited the 610-WIP Morning Show yesterday?
I say that with a smile because it's kind of funny and kind of true. It makes sense and it's something McNabb should have done years ago. I also think he needs to come into the studio and take calls from the fans, so that he can erase some of the ridiculous stories about him being paranoid. In my recollection, every local sports personality who goes on the air and gives their side of the story, makes it harder for the fans to dislike them.
Clearly the advice of his public relations guy Rich Berg has changed McNabb's approach to the media. Let's not get distracted by the fact that Donovan will get his best publicity from leading this team to a Super Bowl Championship.
I think underneath all of the head football coach stuff Andy Reid is a jokester. He loves to throw in his jokes every time I get the chance to talk to him without the cameras running. Andy deflects any vehement dislike of him because of the way he jokes and around and refuses to get too serious.
With all of that being said, interviews mean nothing when it comes to how effective a coach or player will be. We've got to learn to lighten up here in Philly. Too many Philly fans react more to an interview than the way a player or coach performs. The interview is the sideshow and the performance on the field is the show.
The Phillies continue to fail to come through in the clutch and leave men on base. I don't see them hanging on to any legitimate chance to make the playoffs. You've got Hamels and little else in the pitching rotation.
