For some reason which has nothing to do with the way they played last year, ESPN ranks the Eagles "D" line #10 in the NFL . Yes the "D" line that got us eliminated from the playoffs.
It seems that the person they had write this column didn't see any of the games they played last year. He writes, "The interior of the defensive line is held down by two first-round choices in Brodrick Bunkley (2006) and Mike Patterson (2005). These two defensive tackles are mainly run-stoppers and have little impact pressuring the quarterback, but they play well within the Eagles' defensive scheme." When exactly did Brodrick Bunkley play well in the Eagles defensive scheme. He didn't even play last year. This is what you call expert analysis. Also, as far as I'm concerned Mike Patterson didn't play like a guy who should get a contract extension.
This entire "D" line has yet to prove they can stop the run and as far as I'm concerned they won't have to worry about rushing the passer as long as they can't stop the run. Teams are going to come out and try to run the ball down their throats.
I think ESPN gave them such a high ranking because they have big names. It surely wasn't because of the way they played. Jevon Kearse was amazing when he came into the league but he hasn't had a double digit sack year since his rookie season. In fact, the Eagles haven't had a "D" lineman reach double figures in sacks since Hugh Douglas. Millions of dollars have been spent but nobody dominates.
Trent Cole had a fast start last year but he wore down once he had to play full-time. I believe Trent is legit if they keep him fresh. They claiim Darren Howard was hurt. He must have been because he played like it. Howard hasn't proved anything to me, other than he knows how to cash those big checks. I see a lot of potential in 2nd year defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey but he needs time on the field to prove himself and I don't know if he's going to get it. Free agent signings Monte Reagor and Ian Scott should be able to contribute but they're role players.
I'm not saying that this group doesn't have talent because they do. Still, they haven't done anything outstanding up until now. I expect them to come out playing with fire because they got something to prove. Unfortunately right now they don't belong in the top ten.
The Eagles went to the playoffs last year because of their offensive line not their defensive line. I don't want to be too harsh but the last I saw of this "D" line, they were being assaulted in New Orleans on Bourbon Street. That's not worthy of 10th best in the league.
