The Good And The Bad With The “D”

Let's take a close look at how the "D" made out against the Panthers.  They started off fast, made some big plays but they've got to be more consistent against the run.

The tackling at safety needs to improve.  Yes it will get better when All-Pro safety Brian Dawkins gets back on the field but either Sean Considine or Quintin Mikell will have to out there.  Considine got run over one time with the runner dropped his shoulder and he got a straight arm in the face on another play.  Both of the missed tackles would have held Carolina to no gain or a loss of yardage but wound up being runs of substantial yardage.  Sean has got to find a way to make those tackles.  The same is true of Mikell who also missed a tackle at the line of scrimmage.  He's got to do a better job of wrapping up.

Lito Sheppard didn't disappoint with his interception and touchdown return.  Lito is great at anticipating routes and going for the big play.  It's much like an experienced detective walking into a crime scene and interviewing some of the people on the scene.  The detective can tell right away who's not coming clean with him.  His instincts give him a heads up.  Lito is much the same way and every veteran defensive player should be able to anticipate the play once he puts the formation and down and distance together.

I saw Takeo Spikes jump all over a screen play which was on the other side of the field.  This was the kind of play that we need to see more of from the Eagles linebacker.  Spikes read his keys and held the play to no gain.  Takeo still has to get lower on his tackling and watch overrunning the ball carrier on run plays.  As Will linebacker he's got to be more patient.  If he finds himself flowing faster than Trotter who is quick to pounce on a play, he knows he's in front of the ball.

Trotter made a couple of plays and was solid.  Gocong did a decent job, didn't have any blown assignments and was strong at the point of attack.

The defensive line played well.  Michael Patterson showed us some of quickness and got himself a sack.  Juqua Thomas continues to shine with a sack, forced fumble  and QB pressure.  Darren Howard knocked down a pass.  Trent Cole beat one of the offensive lineman and forced him to hold him.  They also got together for a group sack.

Will James made a good play on the slant route to Steve Smith but forgot to catch the ball.

Jeremy Bloom is doing a good job of fielding the kicks but he's got to stop running latterally every time he gets his hands on the ball.  He's got to give the move outside then cut back.
