Many of you will be having your fantasy football draft this weekend. Don’t go into it without this critical advice.
Know your scoring system and don’t listen to the experts
Yes, I said it. Don’t listen to people like myself, at least not when they tell you when to draft a certain player/position at a certain time in your draft. Why? Because every league is unique in how it scores for each statistic. You cannot win your league if you don’t know how the hell it will be scored, and the experts don’t know how your league is scored. For instance, in certain leagues where there are points per reception, the value of players like Brian Westbrook and Reggie Bush goes through the roof. Other leagues, like one that I am in, award 1.5 points for every 10 yards receiving for a wide receiver or tight end. In such a league one should be more open to going against the conventional wisdom of spending a #1 pick on a running back. While expert advice can be very useful, it often does not account for such scoring nuances.
To figure out if expert advice is leading you astray, be sure to check out who were the top scorers in your league in previous years and note their positions. In other words, do your homework. If you do, you may be able to avoid taking mounds of crap talking from you friends this fantasy season. Some sites, like CBS Sportsline, have information on point totals of previous years readily available. Be sure to use such resources before your draft.
