In recent years, a game against the Packers has meant 3-5 interceptions by Brett Favre and an offensive explosion against a defense that stinks. On Sunday, that latter aspect of Packer football is definitely no guarantee. The Packers’ front seven should step up and challenge the Eagles this week.
The Packers boast a solid linebacking corps, anchored by Nick Barnett, a fifth year middle linebacker out of Oregon State. Barnett was on the cusp of a pro-bowl last year and has been a starter for just about his entire pro career. While weighing under 240 and bringing much experience, Barnett has the physical and mental quickness to chase down running plays and be a factor in short pass plays.
In 2006, he finished second on the team in tackles to last year’s first-round draft pick, A.J. Hawk. After a very productive rookie season, Hawk will only get better at making plays from his weak-side linebacker position.
Lining up in front of those linebackers will be some serious defensive ends, including sack specialist Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila or “KGB” and pro-bowler Aaron Kampman. KGB is a pure speed rusher who will definitely be in on third downs. Kampman is an every-down defensive end and figures to bring a fierce pass rush and be stout against the run.
The Eagles tight ends will have their work cut for them against that crew. If L.J. Smith shows up with in the same mindset that he had during his attempt to “tackle” DeMarcus Ware last year, he is sure to be punked on Sunday. If he manages to hold his own blocking the defensive ends, or even A.J. Hawk in two tight end formations, the Birds should march right down the field.
Rookie Brent Celek must also be ready to come in and dust it up with the Packers’ LBs or stay in and help out on the DE’s if he is asked to do so.
Handling the Packers’ front seven looks to be a significant challenge. And that is, of course, before even looking at the playmakers in their secondary.
