Eagles Defense Played Winning Football

After going back and checking out the game again, the Birds defense played very well. Eagles "D" coordinator Jimmy Johnson did the right thing to the Pack. He applied pressure immediately and made the young Packer RB's have to pick up the blitz.

The Birds defensive line played very well.  They dominated the line of scrimmage l against the run and the pass.

Defensive tackle Mike Patterson played great.  He was all over the field making plays with 10 tackles, which is amazing for a defensive tackle.  He registered a sack and provided consistent inside pressure on his pass rush.  Patterson got penetration versus the Packers running game, utilizing his quickness to make plays.

Broderick Bunkley held his own against the run and got a good push up the middle against the pass.  The youngster performed well against the double teams which is the one of the keys to the Birds run defense.  If he can resist giving ground on the double teams, it will free up the linebackers to make plays.

Back up defensive tackle Monte Reagor saved the Eagles defense at the end of the first half as he sacked Favre before they got in sure field goal position.

Trent Cole had a sack and a half.  The sack and forced fumble in the 4th quarter was a huge play but the offense failed to take advantage of it.

Jevon Kearse was active as a pass rusher getting a half a sack and putting pressure on Favre consistently.  His backup Juqua Thomas had a solid game also, putting pressure on Favre, but he’s got to prevent the QB from making an unorthodox throw to his tight end to set up a tieing touchdown.

The linebackers played well but missed a chance to play great.

Takeo Spikes dropped an easy touchdown on the Packers 20 yard line after the Eagles had scored twice and grabbed the momentum.  He's got to catch that ball.  It was an easy throw as Brett Favre was being the gunslinger, got careless and tossed one to Spikes as he was on the verge of getting sacked.  Dropped interceptions are very costly.

Chris Gocong played the well in his first start.  He had good coverage against the Green Bay tight ends.  Gocong did a good job attacking the run blocking schemes.

Omar Gaither was solid in his performance although he didn’t make any big plays.  He was able to help the Birds stop the Pack’s running game.

The defensive backfield played winning football.

Sheldon Brown had an outstanding game with passes defensed, solid tackles and a key interception which kept points off the board.  This was an outstanding performance because he was in man to man coverage most of the afternoon.  Brown was physical in his tackling and battling the receivers for position.

Sean Considine who had trouble tackling throughout the preseason, but did a solid job of tackling against the Packers.  He made some plays first down saving plays versus both the run and the pass.  I like the fact that Sean is attacking ball carriers in their legs.  He's not big enough to tackle big backs up top.

BDawk didn’t do much while playing deep most of the day.  He had to come up and make open field tackles on some blitzes.

Lito Sheppard was injured early in the game and was fine when he was in there.

Backup corner Joselio Hanson has got to make a play on Brett Favre when he went after the ball on a blitz, missed it and let him flip the ball to one of his running backs, who took the ball for a first down.
