A few years back during the Terrell Owens saga, I was very disappointed in the Eagles players for allowing Owens to publicly attack McNabb and not come to their quarterbacks aid. That seems to have changed.
Before the game, Donovan McNabb was booed by the Eagles crowd. They cheered everybody else and went crazy when Brian Westbrook was introduced.
I give the Eagles team a lot of credit for standing up and supporting Donovan while he was in the midst of the storm because of his comments on HBO. If anything the controversy seemed to galvanize the team and help them get more focused. A week ago, the Patriots responded to the controversy surrounding their head coach Bill Belichick in a similar fashion.
You’re supposed to circle the wagons regardless of what you think about your teammate. This is what a team does when somebody attacks a teammate. A good team is much like a family, which means I can criticize a family member inside the family but I never do it outside and I come to the rescue if they attacked from the outside. It was good to see the proper response from the Birds because I haven’t seen this type of closeness on the Eagles since the time before the Terrell Owens era. A number of players led by Brian Westbrook, made it a point to say something about it after the game.
