Is Andy Reid coaching and correcting Donovan McNabb when he makes mistakes? McNabb continues to mismanage the clock near the end of the first half. Has Andy corrected him?
Some of Donovan's teammates don’t' think so. Andy has to make sure that he corrects McNabb in front of the team the way he does everybody else. He’s creating a problem by letting this perception persist.
You remember McNabb refusing to throw the ball away against Tampa Bay last year and tossing it to L.J. Smith and blowing a field goal attempt. He’s done this numerous times during his career and he has to stop it. Andy needs to correct and him and call him out on it.
This is why Donovan’s teammates don’t feel like he’s held accountable for his mistakes like the rest of the team. This separates Donovan from his teammates and creates problems. Andy is undermining McNabb’s leadership position on the team.
I dont' know that he's not correcting him but the perception is definitely there among McNabb's teammates and that's a major problem whether Reid is correcting McNabb or not.
I know Andy has some problems getting in the face of some of his players and telling them things that they might not want to hear. Jeremiah Trotter was bothered that he wasn't told to his face that the Birds weren't going to give him the money he wanted before he opted for free agency and was allowed to leave for Washington.
Andy didn't deal with Terrell Owens in a forceful manner when he started getting out of line and Reid let that situation spiral out of control. Much of the media held McNabb unfairly accountable but it was Reid's reluctance to deal with the matter which was the problem. I think he had let Owens know immediately that he wasn't going to get his way it may have helped.
Don't get me wrong I think Andy is a very good coach but he must correct this situation. Plus McNabb is a coachable player who I think can take being corrected. In fact he's not being treated fairly if he isn't corrected.
Getting in the face of players and telling them things that they might not want to hear is part of the job of being an NFL head coach. Having subordinates do it is not an option.
