Lito Sheppard won this week's NFC Defensive Player Of The Week award. He did a great job covering Terrell Owens one-on-one for most of the afternoon but the truth of the matter was that Tony Romo's poor play was the biggest factor.
Owens had Sheppard beat on one of the first few plays of the game but Romo missed him. A number of other times Romo's throwing were sailing high and wide eventhough T.O. was open. Once Romo hit Owens in stride and right in the hands but he dropped the ball. Again I congratulate Lito on the award because he made the plays when he had to.
Maybe the real defensive player of the week is Jessica Simpson who clearly had Tony Romo messed up. People laugh about things like that but during my career I saw players get messed up by all kinds of things and one of them was women. Guys would be having arguments with their wives and other family members before a game and lose their focus. I've seen the sickness of a mom or dad get a player distracted. People point out that this is the second time this has happened with Romo and laugh, but it's not insignificant to me because players are people.
I always like the fact that Lito Sheppard has no memory. It doesn't matter if he's been beat 20 times, he's willing to go for the big play if you dare and throw the ball in his area.
