The history of knee surgeries has been that it takes at least two years for a player to get to 100%. A lot of media critics wanted to kick the dirt over Donovan McNabb's football career without giving him time to recover from the knee surgery.
He shut a lot of people up today with his performance against the Saints. It was one of his best games of the season, and for the second week in a row, he took off on a long QB run. McNabb's legs are coming back and that's going to make life tough for oposing defenses.
You would think the guy had never been any good if you listen and read to the football experts in the Philly area. Some how media guys can rob a player of all his accomplishments by saying something over and over. During the worst part of this year I heard a guy like Brian Mitchell, who was a great courageous player, talk about how he admired McNabb's heart. At the same time, I have heard and seen the media paint him as a heartless, gutless punk. You're going to see the local sports media backpedalling faster than any defensive back you've ever seen. All of these experts who had put A.J. Feeley above Donovan McNabb must not eat their words. It looks like McNabb is going to have the last laugh, after all.
He finished with a 119.1 quarterback rating despite his receivers dropping a few passes. McNabb completed 24 of 35 throws, for 268 yards and three touchdowns. He seemed to be very comfortable in the pocket and had a good game with his accuracy and game management.
I don't care about all of the nonsense that media members want to stir up around McNabb. I still don't believe a player should be savaged for his mom being biased in his favor, and saying things like "the whole team should play better". The only thing that really matters is what happens in between the lines.
I liked what I saw out of McNabb but I'm not nearly as excited about the receivers. Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown both had good games. I still think they need to bring in a true number one receiver in, if they want a shot at a Super Bowl. The Saints have a poor secondary and their best cornerback Mike McKenzie, missed most of the game because of an injury. This wan't a true NFL secondary that they were going up against. Yet and still you rarely see Eagles receivers getting open downfield.
If they get a true number one receiver with deep speed, that will allow Curtis to be moved inside into the slot. Like Wes Welker, Kevin's quickness would be lethal in the middle of the field.
Have you noticed that you rarely see the Birds receivers get behind the defenders? McNabb likes to throw deep and he's a good downfield thrower, why wouldn't you have speedy receivers around him who could get deep.
