This year will be an extremely important season for Donovan McNabb. If the team goes to the playoffs and makes a strong run in pursuit of a Super Bowl championship, I think he will return in 2009. If they go south and have a poor season, he'll be traded.
It's one of the reasons I think McNabb should continue clamoring for more weapons. They need guys who can run with the ball after the catch and they should have a legitimate deep threat. One of the strengths of McNabb's game is his ability to throw the deep ball. It's totally foolish that you would have a guy like Donovan on your team but not have deep threats.
I think they could have brought back Donte Stallworth and he would have made Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown more effective just because he's able to get deep. McNabb would have been able to connect with him and that would have forced safeties to back and respect the deep throw. It would have opened up the short and intermediate routes to the other receivers.
Regardless of whether they upgrade the receiver position this season will be a focus on McNabb and his ability or inability to lead this team to a championship. He needs to try to get as much help as possible.
A.J. Feeley is a backup and will always be a backup. He does a better job than McNabb of getting rid of the football, but he throws it to the other team far too often. If A.J. Feeley has to start any games this year they need to run the offense around Brian Westbrook and limit Feeley's throws.
Kevin Kolb could perform well in this offense but he's got a lot to learn. He's very accurate with his short throws. He needs to improve his deep throws and must learn that he can't run away from players in the NFL. If he gets under pressure he had better get rid of the football and not try to imitate McNabb by trying to outrun defenders.
