I saw the Georgetown Hoyas totally annihilate the Villanova Wildcats in Madison Square Garden in the Big East tournament. Scottie Reynolds suffered a cut over his eye that limited his effectiveness and virtually shut Nova as the Hoyas ran the Wildcats out of the gym.
The Wildcats were still struggling as they took the court against the Tigers of Clemson in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Villanova came into their contest against the Clemson Tigers as a clear underdog. Clemson had upset the Duke Blue Devils in the ACC tournament was coming into the NCAA tournament on a roll.
The game started out as expected with Clemson dominating. They were ahead of Villanova by 18 points at the beginning of the second half. This is where the heart of Scottie Reynolds, Jay Wright and Nova was exposed the country's basketball fans. They could have rolled over and bemoaned the fact that things just weren't going their way.
Instead Reynolds led the Wildcats back. He delivered 21 points with their season on the line and Corey Fisher dropped 17 and they battled back. They went on to accomplish the unexpected and upset the Tigers 75-69.
This is one of the reasons the NCAA tournment is so popular. You don't win games on press clippings and seeding. You have to win the game on the court.
