Don’t trade up

I know there are a lot of you out there that would love for the Eagles to package their two first-round picks and move up in the draft.

I would like to publicly ask the Eagles not to do that.  Please do not trade up in the draft.

It's not that they couldn't get a high-end player by doing so, but I just think the draft is such an inexact science, that I'd rather have more picks and pay them less.

I'm not trying to sound like Joe Banner with the "save money" stuff, but it is true.  The higher you go in the draft, the more money you are paying to someone that has never done anything at the pro level.  People who say "this guy is going to be a stud," or "this guy is the next Ray Lewis" are full of crap.  No one knows anything.  No one.  Not Mel Kiper, not Ozzie Newsome, not Tom Heckert.  No one knows anything for sure.  If anyone did, they would be making the most money out of anyone in the league.

Sure, you can make educated guesses, that's what these guys are paid to do.  But to risk so much on one guy doesn't make sense to me.  That's why you are seeing more and more teams that don't want any part of a top-five or top-ten pick.  Those guys get tons of money and are essentially GM/coach killers.  If you whiff on one of those picks, especially a quarterback, it can set your franchise back several years.

The Eagles got DeSean Jackson in the second round last year, and they could have taken him at #19 and no one would have batted an eye.  There is tons of talent in the lower first round and second round.  I actually would have no problem if the Eagles traded down again.  If there is no one you like, hey, stack up on second rounders.  They are still top talents and they don't cost as much.  Increase your number of picks and increase your chances of finding a player.

I'm sure I'll get slayed for this one, but that's fine.  I'm going on record as not wanting the Eagles to move up in the first round.
