According to the Baltimore Sun, a one year $1.5 million dollar contract is in place for former Eagles tight end L.J. Smith to sign with the Baltimore Ravens.
It's a shock to me that a team which likes to run the football would want somebody who is such a poor blocker. Smith has decent strength for his size but went backwards in his blocking.
Maybe Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome feels since he has one tight end who can block in Todd Heap, he can afford to have one who can't block a lick. Regardless I know Smith would be happy to play for another team that's capable of making the playoffs.
I think his signing with the Ravens has something to do with the fact that the Eagles former special teams coach John Harbaugh is now their head coach. Harbaugh had good relationships with nearly all of the Eagles players.
The former Eagles tight end is scheduled to meet with the Ravens on Wednesday.
Smith was close to signing with the Falcons but couldn't get the deal done. He was also rumored to be talking to the Detroit Lions as well.
