Eagles First Pick Won’t Be Wells

Quite a few mock drafts, including Mel Kiper and Todd McShay of ESPN have the Eagles selecting Chris "Beanie" Wells with their first pick.  It's not going to happen.

There's no way in the world the Birds would select a running back who has no experience catching the ball out of the backfield.

The big guy from Ohio had a lot of trouble staying healthy during his college career.

Wells did help himself greatly at his Pro Day when ran a couple 4.4 dashes but he's the type of back, who doesn't appeal to Andy Reid.

I do expect them to grab a running back in the first round as well as a tight end. McShay has the Birds taking Wells with the 21st pick, then selecting Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew with the 28th.

The decision to let a number of their veterans walk has created a situation which puts more pressure on this draft for the Birds.  They can't afford to miss on many of these picks.

They have to feel confident that their first round picks can pick up the offense and contribute immediately.

Kiper has subsequently changed that 21st pick to Donald Brown has worked out for the Birds.  McShay has subsequently changed the Eagles 21st pick to Georgia's Knowshon Moreno.

I think those two back have shown they can catch the ball out of the backfield and they have more of an ability to make people miss than Wells.
